IWT..I was there!!..went with a group, and not all of us came prepared, so, when the sun set & temp drops, OTHERS wanted to leave. I recall hearing FM&MR opening up their set, and I'm thinking..WHY ARE WE LEAVING??..do you hear what we're missing out on? Live/ learn.
@JohnsFavRockers I remember some of the people leaving after it got dark. Ended up partying in someone's RV in the parking lot instead, music was plenty loud enough to reach way beyond OMS. Still don't remember the way I got back to San Diego :)
Saw him in 78 here in San Fran Bay area during a Day on the Green featuring AC/CD .,Aerosmith ,and Ted Nugent Frank stole the show with the most shocking guitar performance I may ever witness. And all the groups there that day were in their prime!
Like I said earlier, when it comes to extreme vibrato effects, most people think of Satriani and others of that arena. As you can see, Frank Marino took the vibrato so-called "whammy bar" into another realm nobody else would have ever thought of doing, and before anybody else. He also did it within the context and his interpretation of this particular rock standard tune. The bass player and drummer maintain a solid and precise foundation without adding clutter to the song as well. Pure talent.

They have instigated most of the wars of Europe.' Marquis de LaFayette
Frank was taking the guitar in places iit had never been before... his work is flawless, clean, impressive. It has withstood the test of time, and 30 years later... still some of the greatest work ever.
strange thing- I was there physically, but by the time these guys came out I was pretty much blotto'd...damn. I do, however, remember Ted, Santana, Heart, and Aerosmith, oh, and Dave mason (whoopie)
Definitely underated....he was a monster guitar player that other guitarists knew of for the most part.....never appreciated the way he should have been.
Some of his tones are monstrous glaciated mile long sheets of ice, of what is now Andes mts?.Pterasauradian triassic subtropics and deinonychus sickle pops..You people are a trip..!aH
The DOWN side of going to a concert w/a group of people, ya gotta leave w/them! I hear this band starting up as we're leaving, cuz ONE of us is getting cold, and did not have the sense to bring something warm to wear. I kept saying to myself, WHY are we leaving?...do you hear what we're missing?? Ya can always hope that the event is recorded, and put out on vinly, now I'd pay more to see this on DVD...just a thought....later. JRRJRII
@JRRJRII HAHA exactly! We were walking out at the same time but my lame-ass reason wasn't the cold it was because my mom was picking us up somewhere on milliken and we were already an hour late because there was no way I leaving during aerosmith! Thanks for sharing
@guitarguy10000 You think it's an octave divider then? It is possible but I swear it sounds like harmonics....still an octave divider would make it much easier.
I love the way Frank compliments the guitar with his vocals, sometimes vocalizing along with a melody or riff or whatever... awesome! No one does it like Frank.
I cant stress enough about how fucking awesome jimmy ayoub and paul hardwood provide that thumpin, pumpin rhythm section behind frank`s playing. Im speaking for myself and my own opinion ; There are 5 piece bands that cant carry franks jock strap.
Jesus Christ is my Saviour but you are my Saviour when it comes to influential guitar playing... May God bless u to keep rockin and blusin and jazzin Frank.
great posting....i remember having this lp back in the days....can u plz post aerosmith's same old song and dance from this album? much appreciated....rock on dude!!!
I must say King bee And Johhny b goode from cal jam 2 certainly far exceeded the recordings from the FM Live album not to take anything from that, but man i get a hardon eveytime i listen to this recording.
awesome version from frank! i went thru several copies of the cal jam 2 soundtrack on vinyl in the 70's. frank's version of i'm a king bee at cal jam 2 is also the best i have heard (except live of course).
Somebody post this as a video please!!!! Thanks for the one you made. Id love to see it live played again. I caught this on tv in 78 on PBS in ohio. My parents were playing poker and I was rocking in the living room . Thanks.

32 years later I am STILL trying to figure out how he does those pinch harmonics so seamlessly....
mammatusofmystery 1 year ago 2
@mammatusofmystery - it's a box I think he built. Those definitely aren't traditional pinch harmonics.
