i didn't know all the names were changed...well..padre's wasnt, but i didnt know that yours was. wow thats amazing! that gives new life to that book, which i loved. in fact i'm sending it to my grandfather, my grandma just passed away.
i'm hoping to do my thru hike in a couple years. we're having a baby in a month so i wont be able to go for a while.
oh my gosh you met padre and apostle!! i have read apostle's book and read about padre. so crazy to put faces to the names...wow...amazing. i can't wait for my own thru hike!
@RootBoot22 ..... I am Scraper 11. Best trail names are those that are spontaneous from a situation or event that happened on trail. When I first set foot on the Appalachian Trail (smokies section) on 4 / 11/ 10 at 11:11 A.M. EST.....I was full of sooooo much joy and absolute AHHHH and wasn't paying attention to my footing. Not even a minute of being on trail, myself and all my gear on my back went down, scraping the whole front part of my shin from knee to ankle. Scraper 11. :-)
ha ha i couldnt even finish watchin the rest of this video. makes me want to start another thru! what a great experience. something i will hold with my the rest of my life!
Trail names can be self-given or happen spontaneously. It's one of the great quirks of the social aspect of the trail. There may be 10 Nates hiking the trail that year, but only one "SuperChunk".
Look at Trailplace or Whiteblaze for good info on hiking.
I like your pictures. I attempted a thru-hike in 2000 and only made it from springer to damascus, va until I had to quit due to having extreme asthma problems. I miss the trail. Long distance backpacking is not something you can explain to the average person.
Oh man!, looks like you had so much fun. I can't wait to start thru with my brother on may20. Im just scared that I will give up due to green tunnel syndrome. Physically should be good, gearwise as well. Happy Trails!
Hey Jukebox, it's good to hear from you. All is well here, I'm back to work. I did have a visit from Padre last week. It's good to see trail buddies! You planning on TrailDays this Spring?
I loved that hostel haha. I hiked from Grayson Highlands into Damascus this summer. Probably my most relaxing hostel stay so far. Met some great people there.

It has been a while since I watched this, brings back many memories. I think am going to try to convince Karen to let me finish the trail next year.

You would really enjoy it, Lucasz. I think VT, NH, and ME are the best part of the trail, so maybe the best is yet to come. Tell Karen I said "Hi".
Good hearing from you!
