Actually, I just feel it was premature. While I don't disagree with the committee that the president contributed to world peace, I don't feel that he qualified as either the person who "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".
@JustAnotherMutant I think that the award of the Nobel Prize to President Obama was more of an award to the American people for rejecting the stupid, world-ruining policies of the right wing and the republican party. Obama just happened to be the person representing us at the moment. I don't think most people truly appreciate how toxic and harmful George W Bush's presidency was for the world. Apparently the Nobel selection committee did understand, and awarding us the prize was their reaction.
I was overjoyed to hear this on Friday! Pres. Obama deserves it, and most of us here in South Africa are wishing him well. From a practical viewpoint, it will certainly give his naysayers and denigrators pause for thought; this award is the most prestigious of the Nobel Prizes, and is not given lightly. I truly wish that Americans who deride Obama would realise how much better we trust America than we have in recent years. He has the makings of a great president
:-) Soccer fever is building to epidemic levels here in anticipation of 2010. I am not a soccer fan, but most of my friends are (of course! - this is Africa). For most people here it is an expression of great pride - a way of showing our many naysayers and detractors that Africa CAN successfully host a major international event.
I'm not a big Soccer fan either, but I do enjoy watching the games played during international competitions. I'm sure South Africa will do an outstanding job hosting the tournament, and I believe the entire continent will benefit from having the world's attention focused on it.
I don't really think he deserved this. Of course its probably a power move by the organization, and Obama knows this, but will do the right thing and accept. To presume the integrity of the award is more important than the politics is incredibly naive.
I think he deserves it to an extent, and I also think he's going to have to do some very heavy lifting to fully earn it. As has been said, one of the main purposes of the Nobel Peace Prize is to highlight good causes and endeavors, and to boost the credibility and practical abilities of those who drive them. President Obama is one of these people. Naturally, the Nobel committee is made up of human beings who are subject to human flaws and foibles, but overall I think this is a positive event.
Good point. Still though I hope, even as a Canadian, that this wont change his view of the purpose of a president. His role should the the president of the US, not nessisarily a peacekeper. Know what I mean?
I can't believe that so many people are so naive these days. Now tell me why was he given a 'nobel peace prize?" How do you get this so called significant award for doing nothing significant at all. The nobel peace prize has lost its impact as a honorable award, especially since a known terrorist was given the award, as well. I truly was opening that this president would have been more astute as to how he is truly being manipulated and is playing into the hands of America's enemies.
I disagree. The award is extremely significant, and like I said before, it is used to lend impulse to positive causes that have the potential to really impact the lives of millions. Strong diplomacy is such a cause, and the award of the prize was clearly meant to congratulate the U.S. and President Obama for getting away from the mindless, harmful bravado of the last 8 years under Bush. If anything, now there's more pressure on Obama to do what's right, and I think that's a good thing.
President Obama is doing a 'Jimmy Carter,' he's showing that he's a very bright, intelligent person who is going to be 'ineffective' by showing complete weakness when it comes to taking action that is necessary. My brothers are tied up in Afghanistan as part of the troops sent over there for a war where there is little true effort to bring it to a sound conclusion where the Taliban is crushed completely. There is another agenda afoot. To bad that the American public is easy to manipulate.
I disagree again. When Bush left office our economy was like a bullet train heading towards a precipice at lightning speed. Obama was able to stop it and make it change course before disaster struck, and that is an indisputable fact. His policies and measures taken in the first 100 days brought more good to this Country than anything Bush did in 8 long years. That shows quite a bit of effectiveness. You'll more than likely disagree, but facts are stubborn things, regardless of anyone's opinion.
More troops are necessary. What is sad is that the Leadership of America lack the wisdom and fortitude to do what needs to be done. What is wrong with people these days. Have people forgotten so quickly what happen 09-11-91 so fast. This a shame! Our eyes as a nation were reopened by a direct attack against America. Our government should have gone all out to put end to the Taliban, and yet they played games with American lives by playing political games just like they did during Vietnam.
I don't know that I necessarily agree with that either. You can throw a million troops in there, but if you don't have a well defined goal backed up by a very clear, well thought-out strategy, you'll lose anyway. That's exactly what happened in Vietnam, and to be honest I see many critics such as yourself wanting to just go in half-assed and without a clear plan. That's a recipe for disaster. Let the President develop a clear, well thought-out strategy, and attack it if it doesn't work.
Most people have no clue what is going on this day. Look at the group Obama now finds himself with. Nobel Peace Prize has become a big joke. They awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to a known terrorist several years ago. Obama got nominated 12 days into his presidency and done nothing significant as far as on the world scale yet. It would have been prudent for him to reject this award because it was truly designed to manipulate him politically. I'm surprised he didn't see through this.
I disagree. The Nobel Peace Prize is an award that is given not only for deeds performed, but it is also used as a tool to impulse worthwhile, positive causes and the figures that drive them. That was the spirit behind the award of the Prize to Arafat and Rabin in 1994. It was not a validation of Arafat as a positive figure, (which he obviously wasn't), but a recognition of the positive cause he was engaged in at the moment. He was involved in the right cause at the right time, and got lucky.
The fact that President Obama was chosen by the Nobel Committee denotes that the same principle is in play here. The President himself admitted that his deeds probably don't merit the award of the Prize as of yet, but it would be foolish, petty, and in bad form for him to decline it. I agree with you that there might be some intent at manipulation on the part of the Committee, but Obama is too shrewd to fall for it. He'll have to proceed with great caution now regarding our foreign policy.
Now let's hope he doesn't send more troops to Afghanistan. There is absolutely nothing to gain from being there. How do we classify a WIN? Stay there another 100 yrs.? Admit Afghanistan is not winable, cut our loses and remove our troops. If not, start the Draft and send the shirkers and cowards to fight. See if they have the stomach to stay there.
It seems as if the administration is considering a "middle of the road" approach to the Afghanistan situation, and if that's the case, I agree with you. Let's get out as soon as we can. That middle of the road bullshit was utilized in Vietnam with the results that we all know today. In war, you either commit fully or not at all. Either send 300,000 to 400,000 fully equipped troops over there with a clear strategy, or get out altogether and step up the surgical strikes that have worked up to now.
Sorry to burst your bubble. We're not there to "start democracy". We're there to make sure we find a way to shut down Al Qaeda and the Taliban, but a sizable amount of the population supports Islamic fundamentalism. You need to understand that these people's mentality is the same today as it was hundreds of years ago. They're tribal people who don't care for our concept of what a country is supposed to be, much less about our version of democracy, which is completely alien and offensive to them.
how dare you say that, there are many people that yearn for a change in government, sure al qaeda and sunnis and shiites are a problem and we are trying to fix that too, but i believe that a change in government would effect more things than you think.
I'd agree with you if we were talking about a society more receptive to our social concepts and our way of thinking. I'm sure there are the usual enlightened few over there who yearn for a different situation, but a radical change to something resembling our way of life would require major support from a sizable majority of Afghans. That support isn't there, and won't be there anytime soon. That's what everyone in Washington needs to understand before getting in deeper under a wrong strategy.
Yes, but more importantly, to them, talking shows our weakness--that, and the fact that we haven't completely exterminated terrorists in a lesser country as they keep pumping more in...
The longer they draw this out, the more they can can claim they're "winning"
I believe the Rules of Engagement are getting in the way of troops' survival, and I'd much rather see a few more dead terrorists than more dead Americans.
I think you can never go wrong using diplomacy, because if it doesn't solve the differences with your adversaries at least it shows that you've made an effort to solve things peacefully, and that you go to war reluctantly in defense of your interests. No civilized, intelligent nation can afford to be seen by other nations as a mindless war-monger, as that goes against the interests of all nations. I agree with your thought about the Taliban and AQ seeing benefits from our drawn-out stay there.
Well, that's an extreme way of looking at the situation, which you have every right to exercise. When America negotiates, it doesn't do it from the position of arrogance and disdain that you seem to prefer. It does it because it is the right, just, and equitable thing to do. We cannot lower ourselves down to the same level the terrorists live in. We're the good guys, and we have to behave as such. You'll never lose as long as you negotiate from a position of moral strength, backed up by force.
Alternately, of course, we could just take the oilfields, setup a border we actually ENFORCE(!), let the terrorists keep poking at the civilized world, and laugh as they slowly switch from AK&C4 to sticks&stones, deprived of the petrodollars that fuel their evil war-machine. By contrast, America will have control of the terrorists' oil, and THRIVE.
After all, I think our sense of "tolerance" was based on abundant and cheap jobs&oil, and the loss of that has accelerated Balkanization!
No offense, but that's the same attitude that drove Hitler, Stalin, Tojo, the Khmer Rouge, Mao, Castro and other murderous dictators throughout history to act as they did, with the consequences we all know today. If we were to start behaving the same way, we would be just as despicable and noxious as they were. Being strong doesn't give one the right to be arbitrary, arrogant, or disdainful of others, just the opposite. Strength comes with responsibility to act fairly and judiciously.
Wow America is regaining respect again!!!! Obama rocks, Amen he his reversing everything Bush screwed up. The world hated America under Bush rule, plz learn from that lesson. But Obama actual listens to the UN and world leaders instead threating to blow them up off of the face of the earth. Obama promised CHANGE and he is fulfilling that promise.
Americans should be proud their President was recognized as a leader for peace, inspite of all the teaparties, internationally this is a message of hope for this country. It's an honor for us all.
I have never in my life seen anything like this - If that fucking asshole g bush had even won a scratch off lottery ticket for a free ticket - they would have erected a statue to him. this fucking country sucks. All I hear is how this is going to hurt him politically - WHAT THE FUCK ? well he won a million + dollars and the recognition of the world that he is trying to make peace in the world and I am taking down my flag this am for the first time fuck the fucking republicans.
Yes - "As for Mr. Obama, however well, presumably itll look good above the White House fireplace. There are already calls for the president to politely turn down the award, and in doing so spare himself the mockery sure to come if he travels to Norway to accept it and give another speech on the international stage. "
Dman republicans - "A top Republican from George W. Bush's administration, however, argued that "this will backfire on them for a while" and asserted it was "a gift to the right." Laureates to Nobel winners: Prepare for 'lightning bolt'
It is not even on the Fox internet news - maybe we should call them - I did a search on the site - no information - Oh hey it is on their world tab - just that he won and then a big viagra ad comes up - are any of you suprised abou that? fucking rush's viagra commercial
Just watch these conservative right wing republi-cons blame ACORN for rigging the vote.
And I can just hear glenn beck and sean hannity and all the other Fox News Puppets calling Obama a world appeaser who puts the rest of the world before America, therefore, he is UnPatriotic and UnAmerican.
Or Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize because George Bush did all the hard work by torturing people and invading lands which created peace on earth. lmao!
On second thought, I'm going to disable ratings and voting on comments. There's no reason why I should give you right-wing assholes the satisfaction to take out your frustrations on the great news about the President. Fuck you all.... };-)
And you just KNOW Glenn Beck will dig up Nobel's past as an arms manufacturer...
This is a validation (yet another one) that America finally made a good decision of who to elect as President.
And what do these "conservatives" do? They try to block him at every turn, trying to halt progress no matter whether it does them good personally or not.
No, do not disable the ratings. If they want to show their disloyalty, then let them show it.
The reaction of these people is going to harm them long term. The more outrageous and offensive they get, the more they alienate themselves from the mainstream.
yEH - THANK YOU armyveteran!!!!!! About time there is some good news - I know the fing reps have nothing good to say about this but now the idiots can see what the other countries think about us. Anyone that would rip Obama is nothing but a war monger and a war profiteer. and a prejudice sack of shit
The backlash has begun, as evidenced by the sudden and irrational attack on this video. You moronic right-wing assholes have nowhere to go but down, and you know it. You're on the wrong side of the issues, and against the will of the entire planet. You can one-star this video as much as you want, and thumb down every comment, but that doesn't change the fact that you're all idiotic, anti-American losers. OBAMA RULES!! HAHAHAHAHA..... };-)
No even on msnbc - Joe the scar is saying what an The cast of "Morning Joe" Friday tried valiantly to find any possible good in President Obama's receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. They failed, but they did offer the president some tips on how to move past what they saw as the awful embarrassment of winning an international award
Exactly. The prize wasn't so much for what he's done but rather for the fact that he's trying to bring nations togheter and trying to advocate for a nuke free world.
Watch the video again. It's clear that it's for what Obama has already done. He has shifted US policy away from using military force to using diplomacy, and that shift has been reflected in the attitude of other nations. He has set in motion the reduction in nuclear weapons by all nations possessing them (except perhaps Israel).
Or, to put it another way, Obama has won the Nobel prize in Not Being George W Bush.

Again, that's a cultural difference: When we negotiate, we see it as being magnanimous, offering a fig leaf from a position of strength.
The thugs see it much more simply: Whoever asks to bargain first is the weaker, and therefore the loser.
Which is why we need to completely CLEANSE the Moslem terrorists this time.
No more half-measures like the Crusades, Barbary War, Kenya, etc.

My prediction:
"Norway" will become the new "France"
And you just KNOW Glenn Beck will dig up Nobel's past as an arms manufacturer...
This is a validation (yet another one) that America finally made a good decision of who to elect as President.
And what do these "conservatives" do? They try to block him at every turn, trying to halt progress no matter whether it does them good personally or not.

No, do not disable the ratings. If they want to show their disloyalty, then let them show it.
The reaction of these people is going to harm them long term. The more outrageous and offensive they get, the more they alienate themselves from the mainstream.

They failed, but they did offer the president some tips on how to move past what they saw as the awful embarrassment of winning an international award
justonefirefly1 2 years ago
... and they call MSNBC a leftwing station.

ABC is giving a much better coverage if why he received it - because he came out as the president wanting to talk peace not war.

Exactly. The prize wasn't so much for what he's done but rather for the fact that he's trying to bring nations togheter and trying to advocate for a nuke free world.

His mere election has done more good for US foreign affairs than any Republican president for the last 30 years.
