  • Wow, that ship is going very fast.

  • On Youtube, go to this clip...at 2:18 you will see the ship I serve on. Nothing like the tall ships...

"Festival of Sails (FOS) San Diego 2010 Tall Ship Parade"

  • I look forward to the day when the oil is gone and we can go back to sails.

  • @samdogdamndog2 Nuclear power mate...

  • That's 10.4 million pounds of steel moving through water at 36 mph.

    AMAZING!

  • damm thats a nice rooster tail ...i love the brit relaxing with a cup to tea :) so britsh

  • Wow.don't fall overboard

  • Oi Cookie boy, Quarterdecks out o' bounds to JR's!! well always used to be :D

  • Yep......that's a Pothead on the Fantail trying to look Normal.

    Cookie brought the Spliff.

    Were all happy now.

  • this is FAST ... !!!

  • wakeboarding anyone?

  • The World War 2 " Manxman " class minelaying light cruisers , of about this size could do getting on fo 40 knots ..... Three funnelled ships with a flush deck , they were disguised by adding angled funnel caps , and a tapering black stripe along the hull from the bridge aft , to make them look a little like Vichy French destroyers , and with the mine deck jammed full of personnel and stores were then raced through from Gib to Malta in the bad times .

Pity there is no film of one of those ....

  • @zarquon53 ...yeah fastest steamer s ever built for the royal navy..mind you the french had destroyers that could hit 45knots.

  • @zarquon53 Those were Abidel class minelayers. 40kts were about par for those speedy boats, all armed for AAA and did double duty as gunrunners during the war. The story goes in 1956 during the Suez Crisis, MANXMAN blew past an American Carrier Group doing better than 40kts, showing the flags: "See you in Egypt". Or the story went...

They had a frigate's hull with cruiser engines and they showed it too!

  • A knot = a mile and an 8th .

  • Good place to wash your Dungarees/bell bottoms.GoNavy,Go!

  • @railrdr523 ok thanks

  • 30 is nothing, not impressed at all

  • So that's what 30 knots looks like. Cool.

  • Just wouldn't be a successful run up to speed without a spot of tea off the fan deck.

  • anyone know how many MPH one knot is?

  • look at that weak!

  • Come on Britain, you can do better than that.

We Americans can row our destroyers faster than that.

    XD XD

  • Maybe 30 knots for publicity, but it has to be more than 35.

  • shit thats is displacement up the ass!!

  • I had a friend who was in the Med in 43 his ship was flat out at 30 knots and it was left dead in the water by a french destroyer, I cannot recall the name.It was supposed to be the fastest destroyer in WW2.Does anyone know the name of this greyhound of the sea?

  • THat my friend s is not 30 knots...LOL

just watch the static waves off the starboard rail... closer to 40 plus baby.

  • Is that a MM - Motor Mate or Machinist Mate drinking coffee on the fan tail?

  • I was on a Gearing Class Destroyer DD-763 in 1983 it was made in the last year of WW2 and it had 2 steam turbine and it would go just as fast as this ship.

  • not bad, i was in the US navy for 4 years stationed on nuclear carrier and 30 knots was are cruising speed.

  • Thats Crazy Man! It Looks Faster Then 30 Knots, But I Don't Believe In Allies Giving Full Specs Of Their War Equipment.

  • Wow! She was haulin ass!

  • I think that's faster than 30 knots. probably 33+. They don't reveal maximum speed of their latest navy ships. It's generally classified.

  • I love seeing a big boat haulin' ass...

  • It can double as a ski-boat.

  • Try pushing 5200 tonnes of steel thru the resistant medium of water and see how fast YOU can go! As an old destroyerman I can tell you that the sensation (to me) is less one of speed than of sheer Power.

  • 30 knots, i actually expected her to go faster

  • Look at that wake

  • That took me back, I was one of the first ship's company for the York way back in 1985! Based at the Swan Hunters shipyard at Wallsend, spent about 18 months going round the Isle of Wight doing sea trials!!!! AAAAHHHH.

  • nice

  • I hear she can do 34 knots and is reputed to be the fastest destroyer in the royal navy.....

  • imagine tubing on that bitch thats a big ship

  • '

how come this ship did not have 2 JETS motors

  • wondeful machine.....wonderful British Navy.

  • Remember the arse end of the Manchester use to shake the mess deck to bits.

    .

yes the q/deck was a great place to escape and get some fresh air without somebody spoiling it.

    .

    i hate type 42's

  • Can anybody say ‘awesome’?

  • same engines as concorde ?

  • BHP but what is the shaft horsepower?

  • GREAT PLACE FOR A TEA BREAK

  • We were "forced" to light off all 4 boilers once and see how fast USS Mahan DDG42 could go after an overhaul period. You could hear the rigging vibrate from the breeeze we were making and the roostertail was way above the level of the fantail. Can't say just how fast we was going but any highway cop would have pulled us over that day. The Captain said "This is better than a vitamin pill." (Viagra wasn't on the market then)

  • Tin cans.Haulin ass just to kick some ass.

  • I wish my ass had 50 thousand bhp.

  • @tatsurekon Thats SHP (Ship Horse Power), not BHP (Brake Horse Power)

  • Wow

  • lets go wake boarding!!!

  • EMO! lol!!!

  • water skiis, anyone?

  • Very good but the old Manxman Class minelaying cruisers (built for RN in the 1930s) were good for over 40 Knots and would leave the Nimitz and Iowa behind!!

  • GREAT for sking! :D

  • Great place to sit and sip a cuppa ... The fantail seems to be pretty steady so that must be a very solidly built ship ... I was on an Essex class Carrier and I remember standing on the fantail during high speed runs and having the deck feel like a living thing under my feet.

  • screw you mother nature

  • should have taken the video from outside

  • Pretty Cool. You Don't Imagine Huge Ships Moving Like That.

  • Another YANK loving you British!! Good video, and thanks for posting!! Long live the BRITS!!!!

  • HMS York has made 35.1 knots at full power.

  • @rustohiski The USS Enterprise made 36 Knots at 290,000 shaft horsepower. Nothing like nuclear propulsion!

The Battlship USS New Jersey made 35.2 knots at 212, 000 shaft horsepower for 6 hours, but alas, she is fossil fueled.

  • @1STACCS Roger. Served on USS Wisconsin BB-64. Cool Full Power footage, Go British Navy! =) I remembered those day in the Pit. Also, served on USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72, USS George Washington CVN-73, several Tin Cans (Gas Turbine & Fossil Fuel Combatants). What a run!

    USN Retired Electrician's Mate

  • Can you edit this to start at 0:19?

  • Yow...what a trip!

  • amazing

  • wakeboard that

  • I bet they want a jetski!

  • Daaaaamn ....rooster tail off a destroyer .....sweeeeet.

  • I think the correct term is Britain as Ireland, Scotland and Wales contributed to so don't forget the sacrafices we made

  • i can say just this wow xD

  • if you're not paying for the gas...44gpm is no big deal...what is it's cruise consumption? Range?

  • barcos muy fácil de hundir.ya hay dos tipo42 en el fondo del atlántico sur...saludos de la fuerza aérea argentina

  • @securita333

Want to difference between you and us? We sank one of your ships and one sub and you hid in the ports. You sank a few of are ships and we went on to win.

Now you are rattling the sabre but I wonder if you got the stones for round two.

  • @securita333 Their country beat your country, things are lost in war, such as ships and islands, GET OVER IT.

  • eac h of the olympus engines burn 6 tons of dieso an hour at this speed not very often its used unless chasing a tanker trying to evade sanctions or for full power trials

  • @securita333

Yes, the whole world was against you.

In fact every body agrees that it's right to invade a foreign land ad force on the local people something they do not want.

As usual when the economy of Argentina fucks up you go for the Falklands. Your president in the polls its at about 20% and she rallies you fools behind the usual Falkland banner.

Now go and find your self a job e pay the debts you have with the world.

  • awesome

  • where is my boogie board at?

  • that is impressive; this is one of the type42's?

  • If this is about 5000 tonnes with 50,000shp - what about these new LC ships, 3000 tonnes, with 2 RR Trent 800s giving 100,000shp (MT30). How fast could they go? Over 50 knots? And RR is developing an MT50. That's enough power for a small town.

  • Ship speed is ultimately determined by hull design, no matter what power you have.

If you have a displacement hull, I think about 35knt is max.

    Please correct me if wrong.

  • I'm sure your correct, but I just fail to understand the physics of it.

  • Google theoretical maximum hull speed

    it explains why.

If you really want to know (if you a student?) go study Engineering at Uni.

  • Nah you're right ;)

  • help me out here....if a ship is going at 40 knots, how many miles per hours would that be??

  • @allout1034 40knots is 46 mph.

  • thks Treetop.......I've always wondered how that worked....

  • @allout1034 What ever knot times 1.15 will give you the answer

  • about 36 mph just a little slower than most france de tour bikes going downhill. 44gpminute so how many gallon to fill it up?

  • 36 mph is what a time trial bike can do on a flat stage. going downhill they can go upwards of 60 mph.

  • to fill her up takes 600 tonnes of fuel , 1000 litres per tonne approx

  • thats a small boat.

  • Not at 5,200 tonnes it isn't

  • That's trippy ....bein on the fantail at full speed. An aircraft carrier don't go that fast but can still do almost 45 knots. The older ones like Forrestal and Kitty Hawk could only do about 35 to 40 but it was still eerie being back there at full speed like that.

  • i like the sea!

  • just hawling ass lol

  • Wow. That's a modern-day space ship right there. Closest thing we can certainly foresee in the future. I just don't know how Navy men and women can stand being with the same, smelly and sweaty cabinmate for the months they are out at sea. Hehe.

  • I hope you had a gas boat on stand by after this. LOL. But its still bad ass. wish i could of saw this in person. Nice video

  • 44 gallons of gas a minute???holy fuck

  • Holy shit thats hoopn.... What the big rush I wonder, did they leave the tea bags at home?

  • now THATS a roostertail

  • @paintballgundown8 i dont even think thats a rooster tail i think thats like full displacement!

  • Tell you what that's a SERIOUS roostertail behind that ship!!! And with 50,000hp it should run at least 50 knots.

There was an hour-long episode on the Freedom on Science channel last night.

  • that IS fast...admiration...

  • Even the cook came for a look :P

  • its approx 28 knots , i served on a type 42 but doesnt matter if it was 82 knots or whatever. a ship cant out run a torpedo or missile the speed is just to keep up with the ship it will likely be escorting ie at the time an invincible class carrier max speed the same

  • well i think that 28 knots on a type 42 and 82 knots !!! what ?? man what ever nigga that boat waz hauling azz !!

  • 30 knots? big deal. The SS United States maiden voyage in 1952 averaged 35.5 knots. It also had a speed of 20 knots -- in reverse.. And it is longer than the Titantic.

  • Yes very nice..and the Norweigens have the fastest war ship in the world. But then this was never about boasting - Just an interseting clip of HMS York doing 30knots.

  • Nice roostertail

  • Early 70's Sealand container ships of the SL7 class traveled across the pacific at 35 knots normal cruising speed. They are over 900 feet long.

They still have the pacific speed crossing record. 4 steam boilers putting out over 100,000 HP. Their in the navy reserve now, I think they made about 35 of them. Navy ships go faster but wont tell u the true speed.

  • "LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS!"

  • Nothing compared to the new LCS 1 USS Freedom...look it up...

    Unclassified speed = 47 knots (54 mph; 87 km/h)

Meaning as much as the USS Freedom will actually go over 100 km/h...as its real speed will be somewhere round and about or even over 60 knots. That for a ship of 3,089 tons is quite impressive i should think.

  • I can't see the claim that this is the worlds fastest ship (norweigens have got that). It is an interesting clip though don't you think?

  • and i get emission taxed for 44mpg this thing uses that in a minute!!

  • 30 knots Rite!!!!! They don't want u to know how fast they are really going!!!

  • wow thats crazy

  • never in the flesh mate , that would be something to see for sure ;-) .

  • wow thats really motoring along for a big boat ^^.

  • Have you seen an aircraft carrier? HMS York wouldn't have a chance in a race.

  • Actually, the Nimitz class carriers has a maximum speed of aprox 30-35 knots, so actually, it would.

  • The Enterprise would pull away from the york without any trouble. It's 35+ knots, emphasis on the "plus."

  • 55 km/h using 10.000 liters/hour

(for us logical metric people - rather than the left driving, imperialistic folks)

  • how would you like to tube behind that!

  • wakeboarding anyone???

  • wakeboardspeed is normally 30 km/h. At 55 you dont want to hit the water - it will feel hard as concrete....

  • Impressive

  • What's stoker doing on the uppers?

    :)

  • well someone has to keep check on the dabbers lol

  • Ahhh, I thought stokers only knew where the uppers were when they opened the brow to go home.

    cheers!

    ;)

  • how much that would be at km's/h?

  • 1 knot = 1 Nautical Mile per hour

    1 Nautical Mile = 1.852 km

    30 x 1.852 km = 55.56 km/h

just showing how its worked out.

  • Was the Big E. Enterprise as the Indy was not nuclear. The Enterprise was the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier and only ship of it's class. The next 10 nuclear carriers are Nimitz class and the next class will be Gerald Ford.

  • The first nuclear carrier, either the enterprise or independence, Was built with 8 nuclear turbines because engineers were unsure how many a ship this size would need. Subsequent ships have 2... When I was in the Navy (U.S.) I met a guy who claimed that while in the Persian gulf, they got off track, deep into enemy waters & when they realized it, they fired up all 8. He said the ship was going so fast that jets were lifting off the flight deck (but were tied). It is classified so just a "Rumor."

  • The Enterprize has 8 generators because they only produced 25% of what the generators in a Nimitz generates

  • Bad as hell! Awesome! That is screaming!

  • for all u questioning the speed

    1 knots = 1.15077945 mph

so 30 knotts is 34.6 MPH not very fast u might think ? but remember this ship is 5000 tonns in weight !

  • Very nice. I saw this ship just 5 minutes ago... beautiful.

  • LOL...a stoker sitting on his arse with a cuppa....what a suprise...

  • wow, you can't speed up your car like that in the philippines, it's 55.56 kph.

  • that was my last ship in the navy our messdeck was the next deck down so the props were literally feet below the bunk space mind you with the snoring it was a welcome noise lol. and with the arguement about speed from other warships i worked on radars as well as weaponry and i remember on the illustrious tracking the uss ronald regan exceeding 52 knots you have to see it to believe it.

  • you know that what you revealed is about double the published speed for a 101000 ton ship and my guess is that these numbers should not be made public

But what the hell now they are on U tube

  • the royays navy web site and ship specs and details tell you max speed and engine types so not sure what u mean about classified

  • thats what specs they want you to think they are, real numbers are probably so much percentage higher

  • It's only 34mph.

Look at a plane, it does 500.

  • it's a boat

  • oh my god!!!!

  • boy, wan't to see the engine room!! I'm an old steam tech. =Stefan=

  • seems like a patrol boat not a war ship

  • Then you don't know what a warship is.

  • that thing is hauling ass!!

  • thats fucking kool

  • 44 gpm...take that EPA

  • pedal to metal

    take a seat

    suck a tea

    pure british

  • i love that bit towards the end,,,ya at the back of a ship going at 30 knots practically sat in the spray from the wake,,,and he's happily drinking a cuppa lol

  • bull shit thats 30 knots, my power boat can do 50 and that ship is way faster

  • oh the view of the slop chute at 30 knots, anybody got a smoke, any good stuff?

  • there is no war ship that can do 50 knots ,max speed for a type 42 destroyer is around 32 knots to get it to go that speed it uses 2 oympus gas turbines driving 2 props , and as someone mentioned earler this month when doing max speed its using 44 gallon of diesel a minute

  • Actually the Aussies and Americans share the HSV which is declared at 50+ knots.

  • that is 30 knots ,, no british war ship can go much faster than about this ,this ship weighs 5000 ton and its 2 props are about 5 metres in diateter, so it obviously produces a bigger wake or roosters tail as the yanks call in , where as your 30 stone boat with its 4 inch prop can probs go 50 knotts ,

  • what branch are you in too be where you are on ship??

  • i was a marine engineering mechanic or a stoker as we go buy, i am filming from the quater deck which is directing under the flight deck

  • motherfucker!

  • Holy crap!

Look at the wake behind that booger!

    That thing is hauling ass!

    That's cool as hell!

I think ships should haul ass like that all the time!

  • At 44 gallons per minute that would be rather expensive.

  • Gas powered, as in not liquid.

  • @Isheetmadrawers

No. Despite their name, Gas Turbines uses liquid fuel, typically jet fuel.

  • Nice - looks faster than 40k though. 2640GPH is about right for 25k horsepower.

  • lets go tubing

  • Damn

  • That would be some serious wake boarding.

  • When we took the old Saratoga (CV-60) on speed runs during trials, the whole stern quaked. Nothing so exciting as riding a fast ship with a rooster-tail wake and the wind blasting against you . . .

  • Jesus...so when you say "approx 30 knots," you mean more like 60 knots?!

  • Mr Scott ..............warp speed

  • wow
