Probably was weapons smuggling of some kind or a CIA, MI6, or Mossad sanctioned delivery of arms somewhere. That would usually be why they claim its fireworks for example, and hide the real reason.
They think the fire was cased by chemicals in one of the containers. Once the fire reached the 7 containers full of fireworks, I bet the crew got the fright of their life. There are videos on youtube of firework/container tests... Those things are like small nuclear bombs going off!
Update: It was reported that fireworks were to blame for this accident. I personally do not believe this. We got close enough to see that the hull just above the waterline was blown outwards, indicating a large explosion occurred below decks and not inside one of the containers.

Umm, containers are stored below the deck also. DUH!
This actually was caused by a one of the freight owners putting something they shouldn't have into the container, by falsly providing info to hyundai merchant marine...and are facing harsh ramification and debt for that...im sure hyundai is on cover of insurance,,
you should feel like an idiot because South Korea produced more merchant vessels in one year than all other nations combined and builds one vessel every four days.... owner of the largest shipyard in the world, and 7 of the top ten shipbuilding companies... you sir, are a fucking retard
I was one of the 4 firefighters who came with the salvage crew, fire was under control after 4 days and was out after 5 weeks because the 2 explosions crumbled the bottomcontainers and we couln't get to the lowest one's.
I have posted 3 movies where you can see the damage.1 is hold 6 and the other one is hold 7. We ended up in the United Arab Emirates after 8 weeks. There the ship is sold to some chinese handlers.
just like an USS aircraft carrier sinking~~~

Of course it it possible that a container full with fireworks can do that. Just check the "firework container test" vids here on Youtube.
Every bomb is just a childs toy compared with a container full of fireworks when it goes off.

Not to worry. It was just Hyundai's company barbecue, featuring dog, rat and other exotic meats.

The vessel operator is Hyundai Container Line

I know the vessel was salvaged. After we left the scene there were some salvage ships that came to tow it into a safe harbor.

who owns the container and what was in it?

I don't have that info. This made the international press at the time, maybe you can google it.
