@mitrooper actually, i was referencing that infamous event where a british woman teaching in a middle eastern country was thrown in jail because the class had a teddy-bear and they voted to call it Muhammad, she was called Racist and spent about a month in jail
@babylon218 - if a small stuffed teddy bear is a hazard to your ship, you've got bigger problems than navigation. Small bits of asteroids are hazards to navigation, floating teddy bears are not. :)
@babylon218 Joe Straczynski actually. The bear was a gift to JMS from the wife of Sci-Fi author Peter David. JMS apparently hates cute and cuddly, thus the bear gets spaced. AND! In a bit of payback, in the kids show Space Cases (which Peter David worked on) they find a teddy bear drifting in space.
@gasdfw5 It's never really a good idea for dramatic works to be afraid to have comedic moments. Compare The Last Airbender with the cartoon it was based on. Or look at Shakespeare's tragedies. Even The Wire had its share of humor.
Babylon 5 had all these great little moments like that. My other favorite series, Ronald D. Moore's BSG, could've used some light moments like that on a regular basis.
@knoxvilleguy2 I think both of them were really good quality shows and achieved what few sci-fi shows with story arcs are able to do: NOT GET CANCELLED BEFORE THE STORY ARC IS FINISHED! Also, comparing both shows, I agree BSG needed more light moments like that, and it gives me the impression that one of BSG's biggest flaws in comparison to B5 was it took itself too seriously.
@danielinraleigh When the premise of the show is the complete destruction and near genocide of the human race, finding those moments would certainly be few and far between I think.
@williamskidfears You are SO SO RIGHT! I'm thinking she had that bear custom made just to show it to Sheridan knowing when he'd see it he'd blow his top and help her get what she wants.
The actual bear was a creation of the wife of Peter David, the writer for this particular episode. Apparently, when presented with the bear, Joe deliberately had this scene inserted to show his opinion of the gift.
Reportedly, Peter's wife was distraught and, in retribution, Peter used the bear discovery in his other TV job, "Space Cases", his work with Babylon 5 co-star Bill (Lennier) Mumy.
I think it is funny that we are lead to believe that it is John Sheridan who jettisoned the bear. But, based on the actual reason for the scene, I think it is safe to say that the real culprit for this "unspeakable crime" was Joe Straczynski.
One of the funniest episodes! The THUMP of the bear against the starfury's windshield always makes me laugh hysterically. As for where to get a bear like that one, try Vermont Teddy Bear. They do custom bears.
Custom made Vermont Teddy Bear. Actually it's an inside joke, the writer of Babylon 5 was Joe Stracynski & the JS was his. A writer from the show got it for him, even though he said he "Doesn't do cute", & when he received it, the writer was happy & enthusiastic about the fact that Joe said he would even use it in the episode the writer had written. To show his "appreciation", he spaced the bear.
In reality he may still have it but he still "Doesn't do cute". See Lurker's Guide to B5 for more.
That was absolutely CRAZY FUNNY !!! The bear is encountered in an alternate universe by the USS Voyager, then by the re imagined Battlestar Galactica on its way to Earth. What a story idea !!
That would make 1 helluva story ! The gang from " Sliders " encounter it as a tribal totem on an alternate Earth, then someone throws it through a Stargate powered by a ZPM, it finds its way to the Pegasus Galaxy, after which it gets caught by the " Heart of Gold " when it uses its Infinite Improbability Drive near Magrathea !! It briefly becomes a war trophy of Darth Maul..... To be continued ?????
Thought Peter David reclaimed. His wife made it as a gift, but JMS doesn't like cute. It was used as a prop in a show by Peter David. People were wondering who had spaced the Teddy Bear.
JMS: "I hate cute. Everybody knows me, knows that. So after buying Peter David's script #2, Peter sends me a gift. A bear. A teddy bear. With my initials JS in front, and Bear-ba-lon 5 in the back. I call Peter back. I say that I must now get him for this. He asks what I had in mind. I said wait and see. So I wrote the entire bear thing at the end of the show, and inserted it into his script. Never send me something cute."
Peter David wrote this particular episode (one of two that he wrote for B5). He bought the bear as a gift for JMS, knowing that JMS is, in his own words, "allergic to 'cute.'" The "J.S." stands, NOT for "John Sheridan" as stated in the dialog, but for "Joe Straczynski."
JMS added this scene in specifically to get back at PD for the bear (all in good-natured fun).
A few years later, PD had his own series on Nickelodeon called "Space Cases" (clips here on YouTube).
BONZAI! Not only are clips available, but someone posted the whole episode in question! See for yourself (before the Nick copyright police get it yanked): v=iTRZTHkA8ho

Reportedly, Peter's wife was distraught and, in retribution, Peter used the bear discovery in his other TV job, "Space Cases", his work with Babylon 5 co-star Bill (Lennier) Mumy.
Thus... the reference to the evil "Straczyn".

It was a show called Spaces Cases, written by Peter David and Bill Mumy,
