  • i just bought the screen and it comes with the digitizer if i want to change everything is it gonna be easier to to take one whole part apart instead of just the screen

  • srry to ask this dumb question but I'm kindda confused :-{ .. I have one of those "off-brand" gps from ebay with the Nav N go software and the glass broke(when I turned it on, was able to see a blurry picture but I touched the screen and now I can only see lines) what do I need to replace? the digitizer or the lcd?.... I tried to separate the screen as you did and pieces of broken glass came off as I was doing it, Thanks for your help

  • hi , there is a cracked across my screen garmin nuvi 255w . well , i want to replace it and so i need to order the digitizer . but the main point here , i need to use overseas already and the ordering will take some time .

so can i just take out the digitizer and just use it like normal ?

  • @MrXamenyap If you actually remove the digitizer, the device will no longer recognize your 'touch'. You would only be able to turn the GPS on and off but it wouldn't allow you to advance between screens. The good news is that eBay has quite a few sellers that offer the 255W digitizer starting at about $12 US. Just go to ebay and type in Garmin Nuvi 255W digitizer and you'll find several. I hope this helps you and thank you for watching.

  • @terrorizingtheturbin all right , thanks for the reply . i checked ebay . and they mentioned that they have 2 types of digitizer . so how would i know in order to avoid buying wrongly ? =(

  • @MrXamenyap Go to ebay and type in this part number 320520531165. This company is based in Hong Kong so they are probably closer to you (faster shipping) anyway. When you order from them make sure you email them a picture of your digitizer. They will look at the photos and make sure its the correct model. Garmin is famous for releasing GPS devices then revising either the LCD or digitizer a few months later. It makes it so much harder to get the right parts..

  • @MrXamenyap ...their email address is posted at the bottom of the listing so you can send them photos. They would probably request them if you didn't since this digitizer was changed after it was 1st released.

  • @terrorizingtheturbin I ordered mine off ebay for $11.20 USD, I am repairing my Nuvi 255W - I got the other kind as the one in this video is different. My question is, are they going to send me a peice of (touch screen) glass with the sensor on it (digitizer) but without the metal frame around it? or with the metal frame? I am having a hard time getting the broken screen/digitizer off the original metal frame - by this I mean the frame around the glass, not the top cover of the Garmin GPS.

  • @terrorizingtheturbin Your video should show the side that you are actually working on, also it should show more light on the subject. All we can see is the back side of the screen and it is dark. Thanks.

  • @MrXamenyap Keep in mind you will need to have some soldering skill as the solder is onto a ribbon cable and not a regular hard chipboard surface.

  • on my garmin nuvi 255w the glass is broken but the lcd is fine. can i do this trick to revive the gps device?

the touch screen still works on areas not close to the crack epicenter

  • @mypetridish absolutey. just remove the Identification sticker on the bottom of that unit and you'll see the 2 screws that hold the unit together. Once you remove the screws gently pry around the entire unit with a safe pry tool (like the green one you see in my video) or with a guitar pick like one of the other viewers suggested. It just keeps you from causing damage to the plastic bezel(s). You should see the LCD 1st when you open it. From there it should be pretty simple. Ask if u need help

  • @mypetridish Good luck! let me know if you have any other questions and thank you for watching my videos!

  • @mypetridish Absolutely. I wish I could share my wholesalers with viewers but eBay has several sellers that are offering this digitizer for less than $12. Sorry about the delayed response. I hope this helps you a little.

  • One last note: I didn't have that special plastic tool, so used a guitar pick. Separating the touch screen from the LCD took a lot of work...ended up using floss to start a corner and my fingernail to start it. Made the mistake of trying a tiny metal screwdriver on one corner and cracked the touch screen. No harm to the LCD, but definitely NOT a good idea to use a metal tool on it.

  • ...so it offers some resistance in pulling it out and pushing it back in. I really had to struggle with it and force it in holding it with tweezers...very awkward. And there is also a little 2 wire plug. you can see pictures of these extra connectors here, though it doesn't really describe the trickiness of the third ribbon cable.

  • Thanks for posting this, it was very helpful! I just replaced the touch screen on my 660...I'm still in shock that I got it all back together and it works! I just wanted to post a few comments on a few extra bits the 660 entailed:

Besides the two ribbon cables there's a 3rd one which connects a little differently..it has a long flip up panel and the end of the ribbon kind of slides into a flat slot underneath. Very end of the ribbon is a little wider...

  • I had a garmin 265W with a dimming LCD and I am pretty certain it's the CFL went bad. How do you replace the CFL only ? replacing the LCD would be economically unwise since I am 100% confidence that the LCD itself has nothing wrong.

  • @zhengjdc sorry about the delayed response. removing the CFL only would be a major pain in the a** lol. Thats the only way i can describe it to you. You would be much better suited just replacing the LCD. It will cost a little more but the chances that you'll be replacing it anyway because you destroyed the LCD trying to remove just the CFL are MUCH more likely. I never recommend this for a very good reason. When I 1st began iPatch Solutuons, I tried this several times on larger machines...

  • @zhengjdc ...on larger machines like MacBooks. Even working with larger equipment, its extremely difficult. Just get the LCD really cheap on amazon or ebay. I wish I could share my wholesalers but it would threaten my relationship with them and you would have to have a federal tax ID # etc. Good luck! I hope it works out for you!

  • Anyone done this with a 1450? Got one at Christmas, cracked the screen mid January! Ordered new digitizer but the seller talks about soldering required. I'm capable of soldering but just wondered what's different from the 350?

  • @derbritmo Be careful of the ebay sellers that sell just the digitizer or just the LCD. It's ok to replace one or the other on certain models but I think you would have been better off getting them as one (already assembled) unit for your 1450. This way you could just literally plug the ribbon cable in and be done with it. If you're not in a huge hurry, I will probably be tearing down a 1300 series in 2 days. That model is VERY similar to your 1450. Read my next comment...

  • @derbritmo Also, make sure to watch "How to Replace Garmin Nuvi 1450 Battery". This will at least allow you to see how it opens. 1st: the outer bezel. Remove it with a SOFT pry tool, taking your time. 2nd: After you have the outer bezel off you will see 4 screws (one near each corner). Remove them and you'll be able to remove the inner lcd bezel. 3rd: Very gently lift up the lcd and move it forward (toward the top) a little. You will then be able to see the plug in for the ribbon cable.

  • @derbritmo I just opened a 1340 and the digitiser ribbon cable is soldered to the back of the LCD ribbon cable, rather than being separate and plugging into the main board. There are four close together parallel solder joints and they are fairly fine, so you would want to watch you didn't bride between them with a whisker of solder, apart from not damaging the ribbon. A bit of a PITA, basically.

  • hi,how u doing? hey,,,,is there any other way to buy the digitizer?? I have an internet connected Insignia NS-CNV43 , I love it , but the digitizer is broken and I contact the manufacturer and they don't sale parts and best buy don't fix it,,,so I really want to fix it, now that I saw your video,,,can u help me? thank you

  • @solitariosalvaje I wish I could help you out with that one. Since it's not necessarily a 'mainstream' GPS supplier it makes it nearly impossible to find major replacement parts (like an LCD or digitizer). I even checked with 3 of my wholesalers to see if I could just buy it and send it off to you. Not a single one has them in any of their warehouses (and they hold nearly everything for every brand). I'm sorry I couldn't help you on this one.

  • @solitariosalvaje You also might think about looking for a non working one on ebay (make sure the screen isn't the reason it's not working). Buy it cheap and use the LCD/digitizer for your unit. Thank you for watching my videos. I will have more to come soon.

  • Forgot to mention. Yes I did get my digitiser for the great sum of US$8 on ebay and with about an hours worth of effort, because I was going slow due to it being the first time, I replaced the digitizer and it is as good as new. Thx.

  • Did not know about the dangers of hairdryers/heatguns and LCDs so thanks for that tip. Will bear that in mind if I ever have to do this again!

  • Well let's hope you never have to do it again haha. I just got a MacBook Pro in from a customer that tried replacing the outer glass that covers the LCD. Apparently they saw a Youtube video that showed the replacement using a heat gun or hair dryer. It ended up destroying the LCD. Initially, only the outer glass was cracked but they ended up having to replace both. As for you, it sounds like you already know what you're doing. Cheers and thank you for watching my videos!

  • That's great! Did you get your new digitizer yet? I made sure to include your name in this video @ 2 minutes 2 seconds into the video. As far as the hairdryer goes; BE VERY CAREFUL with this. I can't tell you how many people I know and that bring me electronics to repair that have damaged the LCD using this technique. I actually use a precision pinpoint heat gun but I refrain from showing this due to the amount of viewers that I feel might damage their LCD.

  • Thanks for the video, I did exactly this last night myself before I came back to youtube on a Nuvi 610T screen....

For the Nuvi digitizer removal I first had to remove some spongy black tape that went around the front edges and folded over the edge; I carefully removed this and replaced it latter.

For the adhesive between the digitizer and the lcd I could not get it to budge initially but with a brief amount of heat from a hairdryer and the careful use of a craft knife it came away ok Thx
