That happened to me once with a cup of coffee I reheated in the microwave. Went to stir it, and as soon as the spoon made contact with the coffee, the bastard exploded all over my hand. (It wasn't quite as dramatic as this video, but it still hurt!)
I agree that it was stupid (I tried it before, with gloves, but it didn't work, then I thought "well, what the heck"...yea, stupid), I don't think it was much over 100°C though. I probably got lucky that it didn't even hurt...on the other hand, if it doesn't touch the skin directly, just the clothes, it shouldnt be that much of a problem since it combusts instantly. That I wore a T-shirt didn't make it much smarter though...
On the other hand, it was an awesome experience... ;P
@SilverSeraph2 I had it happen to me while I was shirtless. The only thing that saved me was that the microwave was over my head. It shot out, but not directly on me. Killed my eardrums and shot the toothbrush I stuck in the water flying clear across a large room. Shit was NUTZ.
Don't be stupid, you can wind up with 3rd degree burns. The water in this vid is WELL OVER 200 degrees, enough to cook flesh in a second.
The coin itself didn't matter in this. any movement (such as poking the glass with a stick) would've caused bubbling and a chain reaction, resulting in an intense explosion.
Nope, there's not a heat source, the microwaves wiggle the molecules and heat by friction...also the lack of imperfections in the glass surface doesn't give the water anywhere to form gas bubbles, or something. The introduction of pretty much anything gives it something to latch on to.
Actually water burns reach only 2nd degree, the water once perturbed it evaporates violently so the water that touches the skin is only 100°C the rest is only steam, so nope no 3rd degree burns no flesh cooking in a second, the danger is the explosion that increases the chance of getting burned.
lol i read a lot about it after i burned about 50% of my body with boiling water and steam.
Actually, it didnt. I was just a bit shocked that it worked, I mean, it was really loud and, uhm, fast, so I just withdrew my hand. But I still wonder why it didnt hurt / I didnt got burned.
Until it boiled (30-60seconds), then knocked against it with a fork, repeat (begins boiling sooner this time), knock again, repeat until it doesnt boil within about 30 seconds. Then you can be quite sure that it is above 100°C.
So, in total, about 3 minutes - but it usually doesnt work if you do it 3 minutes straight, you need the breaks and knocks.
I decreased the frame rate, how ? the dial?what is frame rate means? the superheating is actually done in less than a second, You means, when start apply to mivrowave only take a second? how long? Thanks so much, great !

Would a glass of water in a microwave superheat in contact with a baby hamster, or does it have to be a two cent coin? I can get coins.

Um... If the water was well over 200 degrees it would have evaporated already.

That is absolute madness!! That is so incredible how water can be superheated in the microwave, but not on the stove!
Also, what's a 2-cent coin?

SouthwesternEagle 3 years ago
Water can be superheated also on the stove, but is easier to achieve it with a microwave oven.
