  • Grrrrrrreat... One of my favourite albums. So many wonderful songs on it pertaining to Paul and Lins relationship. The early years. Unique in its class, which made it so great...

  • Only Back seat of my car topped that song on RAM !

  • Thought this was a great little song, simple, sweet with excellent music line, the best thing is it still is a great song................

  • Really dig this song. Great melody again. Great album from start to finish. Amazing that this was rubbished by critics. Well maybe not so amazing. Most are assholes who wish they could write just one of his songs.

  • How does he write things like this? I wish I had any music talent.

  • This was written about Linda's 1st husband. Paul had a very hippie-like idea that they could all be friends. But they guy popped off to the press that Paul had "stolen" the daughter he had with Linda. Paul was pissed, felt betrayed and wrote this song.

  • @observer9670 100% true, I hate how people think this is about Lennon, when the lyrics make it clear it is about Linda's ex.

  • @bluemeanie81 I think Lennon once said in an interview shortly after Ram was released he thought it was about him. Paul, and John did write songs about how they felt about each other but this wasn't one of them. I'm guessing it was eventually cleared up because I'm sure in like 1977ish Paul, and John re-couped, and set aside their differences.

  • @observer9670

    " Hippie-like idea?

So you're saying that if you want to be friends you must be a hippy..or share their ideals?

  • @observer9670 cool, thanks! didn't know that

  • I love Paul McCartney (:

  • Everybody loves all Beatles. And everybody has that one that's just a little more special, they hold that personal connection. You may not admit it to yourself, but if you are a fan, you have a favourite.

  • @rockyrigby my favorite is jaugeingo

  • @rockyrigby This sums up how I've always felt about the Beatles. I always loved Ringo, but on the other hand I though Paul was the most talented.

  • cool harmony.

  • Not ,Only are The Vocal's/Harmoniues extraordinary,It seems Paul always had Different Voices. Here ,it sounds a Bit like the Old Vaudville 20's sound he used on Honey Pie, etc. Yet, in the Beginning The lead Voice sounds like it is moving through a Leslie Tone Cab.-Beautiful ...

  • plastic ono band is a great album

  • has anyone seen the Peachtree Settlement Funding Commercial with the little cartoon dog i swear that song sounds like this

  • I pretty much love Paul, George, and John's early solo stuff. I came to "McCartney" and "Ram" at about 4 years old and they were such fascinating listens then. I was already crazy about The Beatles. When I was about 10 I finally heard "All Things Must Pass" and was blown away. That really has to be my FAVORITE ex-Beatle album with "McCartney" and "Ram" following next.

  • Ram is still one of my faves...uplifting...loved Linda singing in response on Dear Boy song,..unaware..doo, doo, love was there..

  • Anybody who's everybody were luck enough to have Linda McCartney their wife, but God made sure that Paul was hers alone. . .

  • Yeah Ram blew my mind when I heard it, i did a college video for English class with Monkberry Moon Delight as the music background, super 8 film, zany stuff going on . . Ah yes, that black Lebanese hash mmm. Good smoke. Good ole/bad ole days

  • too damn underrated, i think its one of his best songs imo

  • This a beautiful Brian Wilson tribute.

  • Ram was released after the Beatles broke up, yes... the McCartney album was before they broke up.

  • One of the cooler tunes ever made....It's like a play or stage show in it's arrangement. Sweet as candy in it's playfulness. Like a layered wedding cake.

  • No Band,No person has surpassed the Beatles. It is true.It is TRUE.Isn´t it a pity then that the only way to download an album is thru Itunes?I read that I -Tunes and a certain record company had made a deal...andI millions .....downloads in an hour. The first day.

  • No Band,No person has surpassed the Beatles. It is true.It is TRUE.Isn´t it a pity then that the only way to download an album is thru Itunes?I read that I -Tunes and EMI had made a deal...andI-29 millions .....downloads in an hour. The first day.

  • Ram was very arty album. Sounds pretty strange even nowadays.

  • Ram is a classic album...very underrated, more or less every song is great!!!

  • @mallard4998. Yeah, I thought that when I first heard it back in 1986 and I could not understandh why it was not lauded. I still don't understand why it's not held up as a truly great work. But part of the enjymnt is in the fact that it remains a secret - we Beatle fans are in the know and it feels kind of nice. The album is soaked with Paul's love of life and the feeling that he was at last moving away from the shadow of the last Beatle days. Paul is a genius and I'm glad he's still here.

  • who is the best beatle?

this is a paul mcartney song, froma paul album.

not even wings is on here.

  • There was so much good music comming out at this time in history. It's almost hard to imagine what it was like now. I think all of the first solo albums by these guys were good. It was like an overflow of what ever was left that they didn't around to together. Peace to their families....

  • The end of this song showcases the brilliance and genius of Paul McCartney.. the syncopated contrapuntal jazz like double tracked choral vocals are unreal!

  • @RJLKMRD He sings the word "fart" when holding the last note on this song. Listen carefully: "fa-a-a-art" is discernible at the very end in falsetto. Remember though Paul claimed it was about Linda's former husband Melvin See, it is actually about John and their breakup. The Linda connection does not make sense when you listen to the lyrics. Paul has changed genders on the subject to throw people off: "she was just the cutest thing around" but he was talking about himself--the cute Beatle.

  • @dachille1 I completely agree. Paul was all about the subliminal messages and one can hear it here. John was probably right when he said the whole album was about him. I hear little messages toward John as well in Uncle Albert. Also, Ram is an extremely bold name for an album.. and it sounds like it's directed at someone.

  • Can anybody explain how and why this song didn´t top the charts for a year or more? The whole album was great, but absolutely underrated.... what a shame

  • This is the single greatest melody line iv'e EVA heard. Paul is a wizard.

  • @dahMusicDude

I agree. This and 'For No One' are the two greatest melodies he ever wrote, in my opinion.

  • @dahMusicDude It's a toss between this melody and "Your Mother Should know." They both are cut from the same cloth.

  • YES! you get it braybeatles, say it again, and again, and again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this song about linda's husband

awesome song i love it & love paul McC

  • Another song directed at John Lennon. That's one of things that made the first few post-Beatles solo LPs great, because they were all sending messages to each other, lamenting the break-up, the situations that caused it, etc. Then, you have Lennon's outright character assassination with "How Do You Sleep?" on Imagine.

  • after hearing to this song I really doubt paul liked his boy. probably he wanted a girl or something

  • yeahhhh paul, puedo escuchar esta cancion 10000000000 veces y seguira encontrandola cada vez mas interesante, aun y cien años despues seguira encontrandola tan atractiva,,, yeahhh paul mccartney from mexico city

  • Genius!

  • Genial!

    Paul is a Genius!

    Wings best Band!

  • paul also wrote silly love songs in responce to johns commets

  • Elton John once said that "these are the best harmony vocals of music history".

    Macca is a genius^^

  • only Mccartney could write such melodies with ease......and he wrote 100's of them...only music genius of the last 100 years...

  • @jayseb666 spot on brother

  • @jayseb666 spot on

  • @jayseb666 Definitely a musical genius! But let us not forget people like Elton John, Freddie Mercury, Dave Grohl, there are several to name.

  • wow I never read the lyrics. they are really good.

  • Comment removed

  • This Song is about Linda ex-husband

How can anybody think that this song is about John Lennon??

    Read lyrics below!

  • I stepped in, my heart was down and out,

But her love came through and brought me 'round,

    got me up and about.

Dear boy, how much you missed,

    Dear boy.

  • I guess you never did become aware,

    Dear Boy.

When I stepped in, my heart was down and out,

But her love came through and brought me 'round,

    got me up and about.

I hope you never know, dear boy,

    how much you missed,

And even when you fall in love,

Dear boy, it won't be half as good as this

I hope you never know how much you missed, dear boy.

  • I guess you never knew, Dear boy, what you had found, I guess you never knew, Dear boy, that she was just the cutest thing around. I guess you never knew what you had found, Dear boy. I stepped in, my heart was down and out, But her love came through and brought me 'round, got me up and about. I guess you never saw, Dear boy, that love was there, And maybe when you look too hard, Dear boy, you never do become aware.
  • Love this song. Check out Stevie Riks's video of this. It is really good.

  • It's about John, Paul said it himself. I'll believe what Paul says about something he wrote quicker than what some fucking wanker on Youtube says.

  • Most under rated album of all time because people try so hard to find a meaning instead of just listening.

  • this is gorgeous.

  • Linda must have been moved to tears when she heard the lyrics to this songs. Wonderful way to make a woman feel loved and treasured.

  • is it in reference to little james and the mother's love? i guess i never pay attention to the lyrics. please let me know!!

  • Simplement ma chanson préférée de Paul.

    Formidable.

  • お手の物って感じですねポールは!!

  • Speak English!

  • the ultimate nicest way to say--I got the girl.

  • How could John think this was about him? H emust of had a case of the crazies.

  • LMAOOO!!!

  • @Sweepingreaper4

He was pretty paranoid around this time.

  • beatiful

  • Yeah, it was Beatle-ish in some spots but it would have been way too much production for John. He was more into straight ahead rock. Best solo album by Macca in my opinion. Great stuff!

  • this album is soo beatle, this shows us that paul was the leader on the change of beatles music on the middle of the 60´s

  • A brilliant song by a brilliant man :).

  • Why does someone have to like Lennon or McCartney(or George and Ringo for that matter)better? Why can't we like them equally?

  • Comment removed

  • we can and we should, they were all phenomenally talented. look how they lit up the 60's and no one, NO ONE, has been able to surpass their massive achievement. they don't even advertise their stuff and it sells bucket loads every week. they are and will probably always be the best there ever was. they were grown up men by the end and they should allwed to fall out and bitch but ultimately they loved each other. there's no bandwagons, only brilliance and the beatles rock forever

  • @braybeatles well said

  • @braybeatles you're right on the button my freind....Rock on cos basically, thats it !

  • @kblixt because Mccartney was the most talented beatle

  • @kblixt everyone naturally has a preference... it's not malice. it's just human nature.

  • @kblixt Because Paul is the best, duuuuhhhhhhhh

  • @kblixt sadly though this song is just paul mccartney. You see his Ram album that this song came out on is not even paul mccartney and wings...it's just him...and his wife in a few of the songs also. but ya so really ur comment was kinda irrelevent to the song...

  • @rocklax913 check the credits, Denny Seiwell played drums on Ram, David Spinozza and Hugh McCracken played guitars... Paul and Linda were he sole musicians on the McCartney album released before the Beatles actually broke up (Wikipedia)

  • @workstrength No, wikipedia says it was released AFTER the Beatles broke up.

  • @kblixt

Well I like Lennons, Georges, And Ringo solo careers, infact i loved them but by far Pauls solo acreer was much better thena the rest

  • @kblixt

its hard to like four artists equally if not impossible.

better to have your favorite and not harp on others who dont agree. we cant all like the same things. and its ok. its music its art..its not rocket science.

  • @kblixt , how about if we just like them for what they are, no reason to like them equally or unequally. Sometimes I am in a Lennon mood, others in a MACCA mood...

  • but her love, came through and brought me around, got me up an abouttt

  • MOST TALENTED MAN ON EARTH

  • Reminds me a bit of Beach Boys in their 'Smile' period.

  • i can see that.

  • i think that mcartney is the best melodic genius ever....simple...and lets face it...the last great beatles stuff was all his...let it be, the long and winding road, get back and so on...where was lennon ?

  • Across the Universe, thats all I can think of.WAIT!! Come Together

  • no way. pauls stuff after the break up is by far better. john did have some great songs. but he cared more about protesting and the war and wasnt really concentrating on his music. i think RAM is the best album by any beatle after the breakup imo.

  • I think It's Band on the Run. Even though it wasn't actually a solo album, but to me it still is though. That album's just fantastic and the best ever imo. It's hard to single out a best anything though, when the differences in things is what makes it great.

  • But neither was as good on his own, without the influence of the other.

  • I love the ending, poor Paul, being so sad about the breakup.

  • At least Linda good sing good harmony. That's more than I can say for Ol' Yoko Ono Oh NO!!

  • haha i know right!! yoko was like a screaming banshee. literally. a screaming freaking banshee!!!!! lol great song btw!!

  • Thats a nice picture, his kids were so cute

  • This is some of the best harmony Macca pulled off since Rubber Soul.

  • stop thiking what its about just listen to the amazing harmony

  • Paul was the showman. He was born a performer. John was way too serious, and completely wasted at the time. Paul just had to do it. In his blood. Why else would someone a living legend keep on doing it? Paul's no lightweight like Lennon said. He made music with joy.

  • I agree!! Though John WAS a great writer,and could sing very well,but Paul...He was...something else.Something more

  • He was depressed when the Beatles broke up. The most poignant lyrics in this song are "But her love came through, and brought me around, got me up and about. He said he didnt want to get out of bed or shave when the Beatles broke up, and that Linda saved him.

  • this song... ah this song.. .i'm speechless can you tell? :))

  • i hate to see that paul was so depressed when the beatles broke up.

  • One of my favorite songs. I love RAM....

  • I agree with you. "RAM" was an absolute gem!

  • is very clear that going to lennon and paul that depression was a very strong at the breakdown, said that there is a hope that never wanted to kid you hear when you miss even when you fell in love would not be half of what was hope that soon I miss you do not know, dear boy, how I miss you, there is much pain in this song. This is reflected

  • Fa dA FA da -,DEAR BOY ,I GUESS YOU NEVER REALIZED LOVE WAS THERE...

  • This song, like " Too Many People" was aimed at Lennon after the bitter break up. Of course They recociled, and were stiil good mates till the end.

  • song is aimed at linda's ex. clearly.

  • this song was aimed at John. This song hurt him and he responded with How Do You Sleep.

  • Could be a double meaning or multiple meaning song, like so many of Paul's. But the lyrics, and from what others have said, it really seems a song to Linda's ex, like I said earlier.

    Just listen

Guess you never knew Dear Boy, what you had found. = Talking to lindas ex.

Guess you never knew dear boy that she was just the cutest thing around. = clearly talking about Linda.

  • When I stepped in, my heart was down and out, but our love came through, and brought me around,... got me up,... and about. = That is clearly about linda.

This song dosent seem to be about John really at all. Although some of Pauls songs were, of course. More were about Linda though. Especially this one.

  • @antinaswarmofbees

No--- it was written for Lindas Ex- husband

    Joseph Melvin See Jr.

The song aimed at John Lennon was Too many People(which Paul admitted) and possibly Three Legs.

  • bach in this song

  • Ram was a high point in a career that had more than a couple of high points. Thanks for posting these wonderful early trax. Great album, great songs.

  • the ram lp was trashed by the critics but I've loved it since the day it came out. I think this song is fantastic! Heart of the country is worth checking out too

  • wtf do critics know? better yet, the head of DECCA said guitar music was a fad and was on the way out when he heard the Beatles audition :)) fck 'em all.

  • just think he did alot of it on his own in his house.

  • AWESOME O_O Paul was incredible those days. Luv him

  • Ma accir a pat't!!!

  • I looooooo oooove this sooooo oong! ^^

    Paul McCartney is my idol!

  • Great song, Ram is a piece of art

  • It's about Lennon, fer sher. No really, when he said that he was down and her had "When I stepped in, my heart was down and out,

But her love came through and brought me 'round,

got me up and about. That's referencing to after the break up and Paul was a depressed mess laying around not eating right and drinking. Baths became passe and he was a wreck. But Linda got him up and going again.

  • No, it's not about Lennon, it's about Linda's ex-husband not knowing what he had found in Linda.

John of course thought Paul was directing this at him.

  • Yeah, after listening again, it does sound like it could been directed to Lindas ex, but could have a double meaning. Throwing in that he was down and out, but her love came through and brought him around. So I can see how John thought it was to him. Paul I'm sure knew that John would take it that way, like it was directed solely to him.

  • Wikipedia is written by fans. Just like this.

  • No Rob ur right I read on wiki that this song was about lennon.

  • You can hear the 'Pet Sounds' influence here in the arrangement.

Paul loves Brian Wilson although the Beach Boys pale in McCartney's shadow. Just the wonderful outro to this song puts McCartney's heroes to shame.

  • i've loved this song since i first heard it in 1986 and it has never occurred to me that this might be a cousin of pet sounds so your suggestion is interesting. on reflection you have a very good point. i've also read others saying that Ram was paul's pet sounds and agian I can see why that is said. it is a beautiful album, very happy and up. i've always imagined paul breaking free from the sadness of the last beatle days when recording this album, like a fresh new sun rising on new day.

  • Excellent observation. I was thinking the same thing. Funny, I was just listening to a blend of "I just wasn't made for these times" mixed in with "Backseat of my car" music, and they went well together. Wilson had admired the Beatles, prolly him and Paul could have made magic together in the studio. I'm sure Paul was inspired by Wilson's style for this song McCartney never fails in amaze me with his compostions. This song is new to me, and it's fabulous, and Big Barn Bed, OMG!!

  • I said it was influenced by Pet Sounds, but now I think it was influenced by the Swingle Singers, also. Listen to the very end. Check out the Swingle Singers and you'll see what I mean. They were popular in the '60s, and the name is now being used by a new group of younger singers who do the same style.

  • This was written for Linda's first husband.

  • Really? I always thought it was about Lennon.

  • It's about Lennon, after The Beatles separation

  • Great song, Paul! You are the greatest of the great and I love you lots!

  • Brilliant!

  • That's the distinct charm voice of the success in The Beatles.

  • amazing song! one of my faves!!!

  • what an awsome song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • its sooo cool i love it :))

  • I love this song

  • this is why Paul is great! amazing talent if i do say so myself :))

  • I think It`s a bit like the beach boys, with pauls lead with a flange effect.

Love it Thanks For the memorie.

  • An underrated gem from Sir Paul. The album Ram is underrated as well.

  • Pauls finest hour is RAM and in Dear Boy you have a mini masterpiece in song writing and arranging. I've only ever heard him play Too Many People live from this album. I wish he would have done more. If you like this listen to 'Thrillington'

  • yes that's for her ex husband

  • I love this song so much!

  • I had read many years ago that this was written about Lindas ex husband. This was a letter to Lindas husband from Paul.

  • I'm 31 years old and remember listening to ram as a kid on my aunties record player. I remember long haired lady but listen to this this is how good macca is, i love the arrangement and lindas voice works so well. Brilliant.

  • To listen this song is to love it.

    A work of a genius.

  • It would be a really beautiful song if the background chorus weren't so loud really

  • Or it is Paul's voice that need to be louder

  • If Band On The Run was his Sgt Pepper, then Ram was his Revolver. After so many years Ram keeps me on my toes.

  • My favourite song from Ram - love the harmonies. Thanks for posting.

  • I miss Linda's voice on his new stuff. The Ram album is his best ever.

  • Can't say enough about the melodies flowing against one another!!!!...great tune by the best there is!:-)

  • Yes, he arranged this himself. Paul is one of the most detail oriented perfectionists who ever worked in rock. He writes all his music unless stated otherwise. The great thing about his songs, especially early solo stuff, is that he loads so many nuances into every song that just when you think you've figured out the best part of the song, you discover something new.

  • my take on Ram is that it is Paulie's tribute to

Brian Wilson. He has said he thinks that God Only Knows" is the best song ever written. Ram would be his answer to "Pet Sounds", maybe not so much Sgt. Pepper.

  • i agree, i always felt "ram" was pauls answer to pet sounds.

  • Love the contrapuntal harmony in this song. Anyone know whether he arranged this himself?

  • Well, if The Beatles ever had an arranger within their own ranks, it would obviously be Paul. According to Geoff Emerick, Paul even took over as de-facto producer during Sgt.Pepper.

Of course, he wouldn't be able to write scores and such.

In this case he wouldn't have to, since it was all basically performed by himself.

Song for song, it may not be his best, but the overall feeling of fun-and-games makes it the far most enjoyable to listen to.

  • Thanks. Good answer!

  • paul mccartney (along with george martin) actually did write a score for a movie, and i think paul has done a couple of others as well

  • Amazing Song from his best album
