My pentax k-x can only film up to 50 seconds without stopping the video by its self, the sd card still has lots of time on it but it still happens, im not sure why though, is there a setting or something ive got it set at that is causing this?
@iTzZReLeNtLeZz At the time we used “full” to suggest that the camera shot true HD video, not the progressive SD or upscaled stuff that some broadcast sources were calling HD. As the HD spec matured, “full” came to mean 1080p as a means of differentiating it from 720p. While both 1080p and 720p are absolutely HD resolutions, these days we adhere to this distinction that “full” means 1080p. However, keep in mind this material was produced a while ago.
good job on your vids!I love my k-1000 and my Kx,especially putting my 50mm f2.82 on my Kx or my sigma DG 70-300 f4 on both of them.But my question is on my K-1000 on the ISO selector between the numbers (200,400,800 ect) there are two dots could you please explain to me what they are used for?my other question is what would be a good intermediate lens that i can use on both the K-1000 &Kx,like around a 28x210 or something close to that?Thanks
@mohawkynot The “dots” between the ASA / ISO numbers indicate 1/3 stop increments of the ASA / ISO. For example (approximated) from ASA 100 to ASA 200 : 100, * 125, *160, 200.
@mohawkynot The K-1000 is a 35mm film camera which requires the use of our 35mm K-bayonet film lenses (or “S” lenses with Mount Adapter B). Our DSLR cameras will also use our 35mm film lenses. PENTAX film lenses such as: the SMCP-FA 28-200mm lens is similar in range to what you referenced, other lenses such as the SMCP-FA 28-105mm and SMCP-FA 80-200mm may be recommended. These lenses can be operated manually on the K-1000 and they can be operated manually or automatically on our DSLRs.
@mohawkynot However, because we no longer produce film lenses (discontinued long ago), you may wish to look at the used market for PENTAX film lenses. PENTAX Digital lenses may not be used on the K-1000 or other PENTAX 35mm SLR cameras.
Great camera & review. I want to purchase this camera as I'm a beginner photographer. Is this camera hard to use? I've watched many reviews and they all show all options & features that the camera has and it seems very pro. I don't want to purchase something without knowing how to use it. Is it easy to use or does it take time to really know how to use it?
@mzredmez Hello - yes, this camera is super easy to use. You can leave it in Auto mode or select one of the scene modes for easiest use. The camera will do the work for you by choosing the optimal setting.
Hi, nice vid. Just got my K-X but noticed that when I picked it up the body out of the box, I can hear parts inside shift when I tilt the camera. It seems to be working fine when I take pictures. I don't hear the shifting in movie mode. Should I be worried?
@koa218 Yes, this is the normal soft “clunk” the floating sensor in our DSLRs with Shake Reduction make when the camera is tilted side-to-side. It is perfectly OK.

We've had this camera for a couple of weeks now and we're not satisfied. The batterysystem is not thought through at all. Even though we get high quality batteries for it, we can only take about 10 picutres before the battery is depleted. This means that to make it work optimally, we have to buy expensive lithium batteries and a battery charger in addition to the camera. We feel fooled and will go back to the store to change it for another cam.
@Ardaiel There were a few reported instances of the K-x displaying the low-battery symbol when batteries are changed in the camera. Please check the firmware version. Turn the camera off, hold down the Menu button and turn the camera on. The installed firmware version will be displayed on the LCD screen. If it is version 1.00, download & install the firmware version 1.02. Version 1.01 of the update (contained in the 1.02 update) improved the K-x battery level indicator accuracy & stability.
@Ardaiel (cont) Since most Ni-MH batteries do not reach their full capacity until after several charge/recharge cycles, using new “unconditioned” Ni-MH batteries may sometimes cause the K-x to incorrectly interpret the battery type & available power. Once the new Ni-MH batteries have been discharged and re-charged a few times, they should reach optimum performance & the K-x should be able to auto-detect the battery type more consistently.
@PhantomAct The K-x features exceptional low light performance and reduced noise. It can be favorably compared to our high-end DSLR’s in terms of noise reduction in low light situations.
@Tarantulicx The K-x is the least expensive PENTAX. The K-r and K-5 are also wonderful cameras. The K-5 is going to be the most advanced and it shoots 1080p video but the price point is higher.
If you can afford the K-r, it is essentially a K-x on steroids along with a lithium-ion rechargeable battery and the option of AA. Personally I've been running AA based cameras for years with NiMH batteries and a slow charger. Extremely cost effective and batteries available anywhere, best of all worlds.
BTW, stay away from Duracell and Energizer NiMH batteries and chargers. Every other brand I've used has worked well, just not those.
@sonofthedestroyer Yes! The K-x and any of our AA compatible cameras will take rechargeable AA batteries. Please check with the battery manufacturer regarding battery life.
Just noticed leopard gecko in the background, anyway the main reason I'am considering getting this camera is for taking high quality pictures of both captive and wild reptiles and amphibians. So a lot of the photos I would be taking would be at very close range to about medium range and would be taken in low lighting to high lighting.
1:52 ...Full HD capture ? 720p is not full-HD ;) Anyway, I have a k-x and I can highly recommend it! After much research, I choose it over the nikon and canon's entry-level dslr's :)
i am getting a DSLR. i had originally planned to get the canon d1000, but now that I have seen this, it's 10x better! i am from australia, and all the shops are really competitive with prices, but this one is the cheapest!
@0LovesNothing0 If you buy good batteries (like sanyo eneloop) you will shoot much more photos than with the regular lithium battery, plus it will be much cheaper to get another set of AA spare batteries. Don´t let this scare you away from the K-x . It´s a magnificent and affordable camera.
fair play to the folks at pentax for producing the best entry level DSLR in the market today. it blows the opposition out of the water they just cant compete with its overall package of features ,build quality , great images, and value for money. this camera could sell for €800 in Ireland and you would still be happy but its selling at the moment for €420. if you are looking for a camera in this price range you would be mad to buy anything except the pentax k-x.
well done to the people at pentax for producing the best by far entry level DSLR, but in saying that this camera can punch well above its weight and has many of the features of mid level DSLRs, it blows the entry level opposition form cannon ,nikon and sony etc. out of the water in every department: 1] image quality 2] build quality 3] extra features 4] value for money, and the fact in has built in stabilization means u save a fortune on extra lenses compared to the others. .
This camera is really awesome,after introducing this camera to my friend,i've got Canon 50D,550D,Nikon D5000,3000 etc tempted to get this cam.1st of coz, the striking colour,then the functions,the shutter speed,the size and the weight! Really great camera for its price! Yes to some of u who asked about rechargeable batteries,i'm currently using Eneloop's Nimh rechargeable,which lasted for a long time,with a good amount of shots taken
Ive got a Pentax K1000 and a set of lenes, can they be used with this camera? Ive been wanting to buy a dslr but I dont havent got a huge amount of money to burn!
thanku! i meant self timer so you can take pictures of urself or any1 without sum1 pressing the button... i called pentax and they told me about the pentax r?? and that the kx is discontinuing.. is it bad? found glitches? :/ it has al i need but shud i "upgrade" to the R
@punkydebutante1 There is a self timer and you can also buy a remote. The K-x was (still is) a very successful cameras. The K-r is a wonderful camera as well with some additional upgrades.
hi is there a timer? is it good in the dark, can vids be taken in the dark..is there a camera that can? how are photos when people are moving? thanku!
1) It does not have an option to control recording movies with a timer, however you can start and stop movie recording using an optional remote control.
2) Although the PENTAX K-x will automatically adjust for bright or dim light when shooting movies, it cannot shoot movies in the dark.
3) The PENTAX K-x has a top shutter speed of 1/6000th of a second as well as a Continuous autofocus mode, which are very helpful when photographing moving people.
I just got my camera yesterday. I'm new to photography and took some pictures for youtube to see in Manual mode + Kit Lens. You can check out my channel to see them. It's a great camera, my first DSLR and I'm already gettn the reins around the manual mode, but have sooo much to learn still. Again, check out my channel for those pics if you are intrested, it's basically my only video.
Yes. I have tried a few different brands. You definately want to get some with the highest mAh possible. (milliamp hours- how long the battery lasts) Some are below 2000 . Make sure you get 2500mAh or higher. I found some that are Targus branded that come in a kit of 4 with a home charger and car adapter that are 2700mAh. They work great and cost about the same as just most other batteries alone!
@pentaxian1 Ok. I thought so, but there was a review saying the K-7 had a newer more advanced system and the K-x did not, so it (the K-x) couldn't compensate for all the directions the K-7 can.
@SpeedFreakNO The K-x does not have this capability. The K-7 sensor does have rotational capability which enables Horizon Correction and Composition Adjustment.
@SpeedFreakNO The functionality is slightly different although the same basic operating principal is shared among Pentax DSLR cameras. It's a body based system with 3 plates including a free floating center plate with sensor. The peripheral programmable circuitry of the K-7 allows for newer features such as the rotational compensation.
Magnesium by itself is very reactive, but when it is mixed with other material to make an alloy it becomes extremely stable, durable and light weight. A stainless steel body would be much heavier to offer the same strength.
You would zoom manually to create your shot (similar to how you would zoom to frame your shot with your point and shoot). You don't need to change lenses if the range of the kit lens is what you are looking for. If you are looking for a long zoom try the K-x kit that comes with the 50-200 or 55-300. The remote control for the 90-WR will work with our current DSLRs and current compacts which use a remote (like the Optio W90).
You can choose from a variety of lenses for optimal zoom as SLRs accomodate interchangeable lenses. I would recommend a 200mm lens (the 50-200mm is a great inexpensive lens) to achieve the zoom that you are hoping for.
after a very deep reasearch done, I thought I had found the best mid range camera in a Nikon D90, until I bumped into this one, it just seems like it's capable to over perform the D90 with a couple Hundred bucks less.
Hi. Looks like a great camera. I was wondering if the stock lens could acheive a shallow depth of field? I'm really looking into getting into this "film look" and these dslr cameras with 24p movie mode and the right lens seem to do the trick.
Do you recommend any lens to acheive a shallow depth of field with this camera?
The bundled kit lens is capable of F3.5 max at wide angle. This should give you decent depth of field to play with. There are faster lenses available (F2.8 or 1.4) that can decrease DOF even more, but I think your lens should suit general need just fine.
@pentaxian1 thanks, one more question, i have a mac and i edit my movies with imovie, does this camera have the right file type for imovie? Can it be imported into a mac? What kind of movie format is it?
Our cameras produce AVI files (MJPG compression). I use Edius Neo 2 on a PC myself, but my buddies that use Macs report that they have no problems whatsoever working with our AVI files in iMovie or QuickTime.
@christonabicycle For JPGs, you can adjust your level of sharpness for each custom image mode as it suits you. Also, you can shoot in RAW and apply whatever processing you want to the file in general. Beyond that, there's no "global" way for turning sharpening off.
I really like mine so far. Too many whistles and bells I can't see anyone using 'in camera', and that makes sorting through the software tedious-but all in all I feel like I really got a lot of bang for my buck.
@pcfrak60 It is. While it's not the highest resolution possible in the broadcast HD world, it is fully in the high def realm and is not in any way standard def.
when they showed the lens' on the tv screen behind him, I saw this huge lens, can anyone identify that for me? like the model and the number of MM's it has?
i WANT IT SOOO BAD!!!!im selling some music equipment and my old RICOH KR-5 SUPER with a TAMRON 35-70mm lens to ge this thing. but NOONES BUYING! im starting to get worried
When using AA Lithium batteries in the K-x you are able to achieve a battery life far superior (up to 3x longer) than what you would get using a dedicated rechargeable battery. Plus AA batteries have the advantage of being available universally, and there are plenty of rechargeable AA options.
..Mine should be in this week, can't wait....I had a Canon SX20 Is and returned back to the store , and while it is a good camera...I think this one will blow away...and shoot better
Does the white model have the same feel as the black one? I'm not sure what you call it but that "grippy texture" on the body seems to be absent on the colored models. Anyone?
I am trying to decide between this and the Nikon D5000. Does anyone have a recommendation :) ? Thanks in advance!

hi is there a timer? is it good in the dark, can vids be taken in the dark..is there a camera that can? how are photos when people are moving? thanku!
punkydebutante1 1 year ago
@punkydebutante1

Also, please see "Uncle Jack" video - it was shot entirely at night with just a few lights.

You can use 1.2v AA nimh batteries.
Echofromsomewere1 1 year ago

Is the Shake Reduction system in the K-x the same as in the K-7, or is the K-7 system newer and the K-x the same old as K10D/K20D?
SpeedFreakNO 1 year ago
@SpeedFreakNO
The K-x and K-7 share the same system which is different than the K10D/K20D.
pentaxian1 1 year ago
@pentaxian1 Ok. I thought so, but there was a review saying the K-7 had a newer more advanced system and the K-x did not, so it (the K-x) couldn't compensate for all the directions the K-7 can.
SpeedFreakNO 1 year ago
@pentaxian1 I'm now told that the K-x does not support rotational correction, unlike the K-7. Is this true?
SpeedFreakNO 1 year ago
@SpeedFreakNO The K-x does not have this capability. The K-7 sensor does have rotational capability which enables Horizon Correction and Composition Adjustment.
pentaxian1 1 year ago
@pentaxian1 Ok, so it's not entirely the same system then? Or maybe the same system with some features disabled?
SpeedFreakNO 1 year ago
@SpeedFreakNO The functionality is slightly different although the same basic operating principal is shared among Pentax DSLR cameras. It's a body based system with 3 plates including a free floating center plate with sensor. The peripheral programmable circuitry of the K-7 allows for newer features such as the rotational compensation.

Magnesium by itself is very reactive, but when it is mixed with other material to make an alloy it becomes extremely stable, durable and light weight. A stainless steel body would be much heavier to offer the same strength.

The ability to run that camera with normal AA Batteries is an absolute PLUS!!
I hate all that propeterian Battery type of power supply that most of the other Brand cameras have.

can this camera only support pentax lenses?
LDTV08 1 year ago
@sunny63ea
You would zoom manually to create your shot (similar to how you would zoom to frame your shot with your point and shoot). You don't need to change lenses if the range of the kit lens is what you are looking for. If you are looking for a long zoom try the K-x kit that comes with the 50-200 or 55-300. The remote control for the 90-WR will work with our current DSLRs and current compacts which use a remote (like the Optio W90).
pentaxian1 1 year ago
I LOVE MY K-x !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3 ^^
Makkopoli 1 year ago
@sunny63ea
You can choose from a variety of lenses for optimal zoom as SLRs accomodate interchangeable lenses. I would recommend a 200mm lens (the 50-200mm is a great inexpensive lens) to achieve the zoom that you are hoping for.
pentaxian1 1 year ago
after a very deep reasearch done, I thought I had found the best mid range camera in a Nikon D90, until I bumped into this one, it just seems like it's capable to over perform the D90 with a couple Hundred bucks less.

Hey Pentax guy, your review rocks. You speak very deliberate and clear for anybody to understand. Love your reviews!

Thanks
arrowheadss 1 year ago
@arrowheadss
The bundled kit lens is capable of F3.5 max at wide angle. This should give you decent depth of field to play with. There are faster lenses available (F2.8 or 1.4) that can decrease DOF even more, but I think your lens should suit general need just fine.
pentaxian1 1 year ago
@pentaxian1 thanks, one more question, i have a mac and i edit my movies with imovie, does this camera have the right file type for imovie? Can it be imported into a mac? What kind of movie format is it?
thanks
arrowheadss 1 year ago
@arrowheadss
Our cameras produce AVI files (MJPG compression). I use Edius Neo 2 on a PC myself, but my buddies that use Macs report that they have no problems whatsoever working with our AVI files in iMovie or QuickTime.

Can sharpening in-camera be turned off?
christonabicycle 1 year ago
@christonabicycle For JPGs, you can adjust your level of sharpness for each custom image mode as it suits you. Also, you can shoot in RAW and apply whatever processing you want to the file in general. Beyond that, there's no "global" way for turning sharpening off.
pentaxian1 1 year ago
I really like mine so far. Too many whistles and bells I can't see anyone using 'in camera', and that makes sorting through the software tedious-but all in all I feel like I really got a lot of bang for my buck.

why does this kx use AA batteries?
zjr8879 1 year ago
When using AA Lithium batteries in the K-x you are able to achieve a battery life far superior (up to 3x longer) than what you would get using a dedicated rechargeable battery. Plus AA batteries have the advantage of being available universally, and there are plenty of rechargeable AA options.
