It is a brilliant production from top to bottom. A stunning performance by Kathleen Chalfant! The direction was amazing. It is rare to see something this good in Los Angeles. BRAVO!!!
I couldn't disagree more. I was there last night as well. I thought the play was incredibly moving. The "ending" while disturbing, makes perfect sense. It is not only one of the finest theatre pieces I have seen in recent years, but it is a notice to the world that, as Miller said, "attention must be paid". I was in the theatre and I saw people moved to tears by the story of Armenia. There was a standing ovation, and really that's the only review that matters. See this play, you wont forget it.
It isn't "the story of Armenia" with which I take issue. Three quarters of the play is good and the actors are wonderful. The ending disputes it's own thesis, however, that one must go through and rise above what horror men inflict on one another. Of course "attention must be paid" but just because something is about the Armenian genocide doesn't mean it is automatically a sacred cow, immune to criticism.
Saw this last night. Aims to be tragic and uplifting but is ruined by it's ending where the hell fearing grandmother turns her grandson into a murderer. Instead of truly being "strong" as she continually exhorts him to be, and getting her the spirtual and mental couseling she needs to deal with her pain, he wimps out and goes along with her self hatred and kills her. So, instead of stopping the poison the Turks have started, he adds to it.
Absolutely amazing show! Moving, thrilling, insightful, a brillant piece of theatre. I recommend seeing the show.
