@Maniac742 so what. the video has the topic "roger federer hardcourt masterclass". so if u want to see game points from each player. go to highlights replay
@homergrandslama29 His forehand is pretty good, backhand terrible compared to most top 20 players. And, he needs to stop coming to net against Federer. He keeps doing it and he's hurting himself when he does that cuz he almost always loses the point at net.
@hattrickster33 his forehand kind of sucks now, more so then his bh, it's his slice that is really terrible. Going to net isn't a bad idea, going to net on bad approach shots like he does, now that is a bad idea, and that is why he always loses points at net, his volleys arent bad, but it's his bad approach shots that set him up to be passed.
Looking at Roddick play is like someone who plays on crack. He's so jittery, and just doesn't have any flow. I think if he could just calm down a bit, think a bit more about his shots, and have some flow on his ground strokes instead of such insane top spin, he'd be dominating the game.
I like the third point where Roddick hits an inside in forehand approach shot and gets burned on the pass. One of his biggest weaknesses is his approaches.
kudos to roddick for containing all the frustration that must be welling up inside him. he looks like he's being toyed with despite a final score that looks competitive.
@oprah999 There was an article I read a while ago that had McEnroe and Federer's thoughts about that. McEnroe said that part of the reason is because for a good while, America took "being the best" for granted; for a good while we had a lot of top American players, bar the last decade. Federer also added that the focus of top athletes are different in each country; he said in European countries, the top athletes play tennis. In the US, it's more towards football and baseball, etc.
the majority of sports people still play football in europe. Its the main sport over here. The difference is america has slipped as a tennis nation. In europe we play alot of sports and we have recently taken over the golfing scene from the americans aswell as tennis. Its just a good time for european sport.
@johnboy14 I'm assuming you're European based off your comment, so pardon me if I'm wrong, but I think there's been some confusion (and it's my fault). I should have clarified this; when I said football, I meant American football. My mistake, and my apologies. I know soccer (or to you, football) is the largest sport in Europe, but I was just echoing Federer's comments from the article.
Also, I thought Asia was taking over Golf, like Korea and such?
The point at 6:40 is a staple of a Federer-Roddick match: Fed slices short crosscourt backhand, Roddick takes the bait and approaches with a deep crosscourt slice backhand, and is passed down the line. I bet Federer hits two or three of those winners in every match against Roddick. Seriously, Andy? Can't you learn?
@Fernball21 cus he can't out rally federer in the baseline, so have to resort to gambling on the points. Nothing much he can do about it, neither better on baseline nor net. He was good in the past due to extreme power in his shots and serve.
@youziness My point is that after over 20 matches against Federer, Roddick should do better on those points. He should at least anticipate better and get there sooner, give himself time to come over that ball with two hands. I think it's just plain dumb that Roddick still loses these points pretty much every time, and in the exact same way.
@Fernball21 Some 1 said I forgot who on a sports show that Roddick is a great server. But he's not a great mover. Watch his feet here. Federer knows this and jerks him all over left and right. He knew just block his serve and then Roddick is finished. His approach shots are so slow and his movement is so poor federer picked him to pieces time n time
@Fernball21 cus he can't out rally federer in the baseline, so have to resort to gambling on the points. Nothing much he can do about it, neither better on baseline nor net. He was good in the past due to extreme power in his shots and serve.
Roddick is a good consistent player with a big serve, but he doesn´t have any side of his game other than his serve which is dangerous, not too much power, not too much topspin, you can say the same about Djokovic maybe, but he has the ability to put so much more pressure on you and then hit the booming winners when needet to, Rafa and Murray aswell. Where´s Roger needs to attack weak serves and serve well himself and end points as quick as possible, atleast when playing those three!
@FigureOurYourself1 his forehand in 2003-2004 was very powerfull, for some reason, it seem´s like he decided not to play power baseline tennis anymore...he may have changed his equipment as well, string´s, tension etc.. as well, for more consistency, rather than power..his serve is still fast, but he doesn´t serve 155mph anymore, so his serve has slowed as well..
Everyone says this is a masterclass... it's not like he lost 6-2 6-1 6-1. Roddick fought well, and just didn't convert some key points. This happens in plently of Fed matches
point that started at 8:00 was something that caught my eye.
Roddick actually played an awesome point there and hit a beautiful approach shot -- something he should learn from himself. THAT'S how you approach the net. all-in-all though ... Federer was just in full-flight. good match!
Great vid!! Federer's forehand is sick, have some vids of me (trying) to copy the straight arm aspect of his forehand. Check it my newest upload on my channel and see if you can tell who my idol was growing up
@asdfuogh raquet choice is a very personal thing..the very lighter frames, are usually head heavy or even balanced, for the recreational club player, but most frames are a little head light or very head light.
@asdfuogh I agree, I had a wilson k-six one team once, even balanced raquet, pretty light, and the lack of stability, due to the light weight was bad, which sent a lot of shock and vibration to my arm, eventually one day, I framed the ball, on a hard hit forehand and my arm got jacked up..was off the court for a few weeks, maybe, that´s why roger, has so much stability and plow through on his shot´s, because he uses a very heavy, very head light frame. as is the case for other pro´s as well..
@extradutyfelt1 he hasnt switched racquets though, only paintjobs. yes his racquet his painted to look like the pure drive roddick + GT, but in reality its the pure drive team + from 2002. so no cortex or gt or anything just the old pure drive team + under the paint
You've got to ask yourself what real weapons does Roddick have. He has a great serve but no other real weapons. He doesn't have the groundstrokes that other players possess. He's pretty much a 1 dimensional player. He's still belongs in the top ten but he'll never be in the same class as Federer or Nadal.
@Rsy1981 And after 6 years, what I can't figure out is how he stays in the top 10. It's awkward for me sitting at home to watch him at the net, so I can't imagine how he must feel up there. I mean, Christ, @4:51 says it all. I hate his slice backhand approaches, they're awful, and he only does them b/c he can't set the point up for a better approach. Sometimes when I watch him play Roger, I wonder how much of the match is Andy's suck or Roger's genius. Terrible top 10 player.
@canthandlemytopspin You know, you are right. I can't figure out how he stays in the top 10 either. I guess he's able to acrew just enough ATP points to stay in the top 10. Plus he's been able to stay injury free in recent years, where as players like hewitt haven't been able to stay there because of injury. Just went and sure Roddick play last night in Brisbane. He played a player that was younger and didn't have alot of experience and he didn't really do anything special to beat him.
@Rsy1981 that's exactly how he is able to stay in the top 10, besides his serve he has worked everything else to a point where he is well rounded in the earlier years he was just a serve and forehand, but now since that isn't enough he worked everything else good enough
I think Roddick would have better results with his serve + big forehand combo instead of the current "all round game", he's turning into a pusher with a good serve
@89Pleasek yeah I agree, with such an aggressive serve... arguably the best one in tennis... sitting on the baseline is stupid, serve and volley is what roddick needs. The net is where Roddick should be going.
I really feel bad for Roddick because everytime he gets on a good run in a major, he usually runs into Federer in the semis or final. Having said that, I know Roddick was kicking himself for losing to the likes of Lu at Wimbledon this year being that Federer went out shortly after, and he wouldn't have had to go through Federer for that Wimbledon title he's always wanted so badly.
i noticed that roddicks court position was a lot better in the second and third set. In the first set he was always at least a metre behind the baseline thats why he wasnt putting up much of a fight. I think the reason roddick struggles against federer is cos federer always strikes the ball early always pushing roddick behind the baseline and also roddick hits his groundys pretty short so its much easier for fed
Well the reality is that Roddick charges the net like a kamikaze. His net charges are ridiculous, sometimes he just hits a random shot from the very back of the court and starts charging and he's barely at the T when the opponent has hit a passing shot
@DestroyerAlexandros He's not so bad at choosing when to approach the net against anyone else. It's only against Federer that he chooses the wrong times to approach. The way Federer plays against Roddick, it looks like they're evenly matched in the rally, then Federer pulls a winner out of nowhere. That's why Roddick approaches at stupid times against Federer, because that uncertainty about when he will strike puts Roddick on edge and makes him a lot less patient than he is against anyone else.
when arod play´s fed, he need´s to hold serve, bang hard and deep, from the baseline, basically attack, at every opportunity...though it´s easier said than done..
Yes, easier said than done. Overpowering Federer between 2003-2007 was not the way to go about beating him. He'd defend and weather the storm. Federer was also a demon back in the day at turning the tables on the offence with one shot. Only Safin who had to pull out all the stops (and has no technical weaknesses unlike Roddick) could overpower Federer.
Seems like Federer simply starts every point on top unless Roddick hits a first serve.
They also do the same thing when returning each other's second serve, standing in, but Roddick seems to not read the kick as well so he seems to step in and the ball just still jumps away from him.
roddick is a very good player and a superb serve-specialist, but his forhand just gives federer to much time to set up even if he is in trouble, his backhand isn´t strong enough and he often chooses the wrong hit angainst fed especially... but we´re talking about roger.. so keep your head up high andy, you played a great match :)
@tvtotalforever RawDICK is the ultimate grinder out there. Roger has such a ho-hum look on his face when he plays Andy. I don't think RawDick troubles him in the least.. If anything, he looks bored playing Andy because we all know what the outcome is going to be... I always love seeing Andy brought down a peg or two. Great stuff!
@NMS5758 why are you disrespecting roddick? he is a great charackter and has also been a successfull tennis player. he might loose a lot and get owned by federer but this is no reason so say things like that!
It's weird how many times Roddick has come so close to winning a Gran Slam and he runs into Federer. He got to three Wimbledon finals all losing to Federer and he also got to one more US open final... Also lost to Federer...
@Whenisit123 3 wimby finals, 2 us open finals (won the first one, met fed in 2nd), 4 AO semis (met fed 2x) 1 wimby semi (met fed) 1 US qf (met fed). Roddick was the best player in the tourney aside from fed in wimby's 03, 04, maybe 05 cuz of hewitt. 09, US open 06 (his cinderella slam final like 09 wimby) and maybe 07 AO and US. So That's 8 GS titles, including 03 US, Andy could have possibly gotten, more than Jonny Mac, and tied with Jimbo...poor Andy...
@Deadeye287 haha nice recount. I wonder if Andy would be playing any better than he is now if federer wasn't here... but who wants to think about that?! :)
@Whenisit123 I know my Roddick history lol. Yea I would assume he'd be playing the tennis he played from 01-05, but like 3x better power play with volleys and everything. But yea, we Roddick fans try best not to think about that.
A classic scenario where Federer creams the American. Same thing happened 2 years ago. There's nothing new about this. Fed's game is just mere perfection, in 09 that is. Where has the old Roger go?
@Konformation07 I agree. Roddick is much more of a man. I mean, who would want to have 16 Grand Slam trophies? I would personally rather not have any trophies, or one like Andy. That means your a better player anyways. Zero trophies= the better player.
@scottdavis0676 you can be sarcastic if you want to but I would honestly have one trophy and be as effective as Roger then have 16 and and be nonexistent to help others.
poor roddick, He's so good but Federer just has, and has always had, his number. People who think he sucks don't know tennis. You don't basically spend your entire career in the top 10 and suck.
think how draining this would be. federer kept roddick running all up and down the court the whole match. there's just not much you can do against that kind of skill.
Roddick did pretty well to even stay close to Fed in this match, i thought after the first set n a bit it was gunna be a repeat of the AO 07 Semi all over again.
andy has a poor footwork? he seems to always not be at the place hes supposed to be at.. and he seems to be hitting towards Federer all the time~ i wish he will change his game style soon.. i love him..
If Rafa were good enough to regularly meet Roger in the other events later in the year, their record would be closer together. Roger's actually ahead 5-4 on other surfaces, and 4-1 after June of each year.
Just imagine if Rafa weren't so amazing on clay. Roger could have 5 French Opens. He's the greatest big-game tennis player of all-time, and the most complete player by a mile. Agassi played Federer, Sampras, McEnroe, Lendl, etc., and said Fed was the best by far.
@whutbrush It's hard to say if he's the greatest of all time, because as in any other sport, there's too many variables. Does Federer have an opponent that's as good as Sampras's Agassi? Like you said, Nadal doesn't meet him in that many hard court finals. Not to mention, Agassi and Sampras lost to Federer when they were at the end of their careers. Sampras has beat him in exhibitions before, who's to say that Federer would have the edge over Sampras. I think Fed's the best too but..
Roger is the greatest of all-time. The head-to-head thing is overblown. No boxing expert rates Rocky Marciano above Joe Louis even though he knocked him out. No expert rates Joe Frazier or Ken Norton ahead of Muhammad Ali despite the fact that they both beat him in their first meetings and arguably won 2 of 3. Not to mention the stylistic nightmare they presented to him.
Styles make fights and Rafa's works really well against Roger on clay. That's where 12 of their meetings have taken place.
federer just absolutely fucked up roddicks entire tennis career haha!!

Sometimes when I watch him play Roger, I wonder how much of the match is Andy's suck or Roger's genius. Terrible top 10 player.
canthandlemytopspin 1 year ago
@canthandlemytopspin You know, you are right. I can't figure out how he stays in the top 10 either. I guess he's able to acrew just enough ATP points to stay in the top 10. Plus he's been able to stay injury free in recent years, where as players like hewitt haven't been able to stay there because of injury. Just went and sure Roddick play last night in Brisbane. He played a player that was younger and didn't have alot of experience and he didn't really do anything special to beat him.
Rsy1981 1 year ago
@Rsy1981 that's exactly how he is able to stay in the top 10, besides his serve he has worked everything else to a point where he is well rounded in the earlier years he was just a serve and forehand, but now since that isn't enough he worked everything else good enough
9tails23 1 year ago 5
I think Roddick would have better results with his serve + big forehand combo instead of the current "all round game", he's turning into a pusher with a good serve
89Pleasek 5 months ago 17
@89Pleasek true..go Roddick
TheHAMMER77777 4 months ago
@89Pleasek yeah I agree, with such an aggressive serve... arguably the best one in tennis... sitting on the baseline is stupid, serve and volley is what roddick needs. The net is where Roddick should be going.
BrofessorGaming 2 months ago
@89Pleasek big forehand ??!!
everyone has a stronger forehand than Roddick
emiltsuimunsang 1 month ago 2
I meant his forehand from 2003-2004, that was a bomber

I'm surprised that roddick hit some down the lines...but he could've done better than that!
stupidman41 1 year ago
I really feel bad for Roddick because everytime he gets on a good run in a major, he usually runs into Federer in the semis or final. Having said that, I know Roddick was kicking himself for losing to the likes of Lu at Wimbledon this year being that Federer went out shortly after, and he wouldn't have had to go through Federer for that Wimbledon title he's always wanted so badly.

i noticed that roddicks court position was a lot better in the second and third set. In the first set he was always at least a metre behind the baseline thats why he wasnt putting up much of a fight. I think the reason roddick struggles against federer is cos federer always strikes the ball early always pushing roddick behind the baseline and also roddick hits his groundys pretty short so its much easier for fed
myfriendjasonso 1 year ago
roddick's forehand is too tame. it's got lots of topspin but usually slow and drops short is the court. Hit it more flat.
cys12141 1 year ago
I'm a federer fan , but respect roddick for his determination and persistence , and he took fed all the way at Wimbledon 09'

7:15 - 7:35 Roddick pretends he's Federer
DestroyerAlexandros 1 year ago
Well the reality is that Roddick charges the net like a kamikaze. His net charges are ridiculous, sometimes he just hits a random shot from the very back of the court and starts charging and he's barely at the T when the opponent has hit a passing shot
DestroyerAlexandros 1 year ago
@DestroyerAlexandros He's not so bad at choosing when to approach the net against anyone else. It's only against Federer that he chooses the wrong times to approach. The way Federer plays against Roddick, it looks like they're evenly matched in the rally, then Federer pulls a winner out of nowhere. That's why Roddick approaches at stupid times against Federer, because that uncertainty about when he will strike puts Roddick on edge and makes him a lot less patient than he is against anyone else.

when arod play´s fed, he need´s to hold serve, bang hard and deep, from the baseline, basically attack, at every opportunity...though it´s easier said than done..
extradutyfelt1 1 year ago
@extradutyfelt1
Anaconda43VR 1 year ago
Seems like Federer simply starts every point on top unless Roddick hits a first serve.
They also do the same thing when returning each other's second serve, standing in, but Roddick seems to not read the kick as well so he seems to step in and the ball just still jumps away from him.
Ryslarks 1 year ago
Everytime Roddick approaches the net I immediately think... How's Roger gonna pass him this time??

roddick is a very good player and a superb serve-specialist, but his forhand just gives federer to much time to set up even if he is in trouble, his backhand isn´t strong enough and he often chooses the wrong hit angainst fed especially... but we´re talking about roger.. so keep your head up high andy, you played a great match :)
tvtotalforever 1 year ago
@tvtotalforever RawDICK is the ultimate grinder out there. Roger has such a ho-hum look on his face when he plays Andy. I don't think RawDick troubles him in the least.. If anything, he looks bored playing Andy because we all know what the outcome is going to be... I always love seeing Andy brought down a peg or two. Great stuff!
NMS5758 1 year ago
@NMS5758 why are you disrespecting roddick? he is a great charackter and has also been a successfull tennis player. he might loose a lot and get owned by federer but this is no reason so say things like that!
tvtotalforever 11 months ago
It's weird how many times Roddick has come so close to winning a Gran Slam and he runs into Federer. He got to three Wimbledon finals all losing to Federer and he also got to one more US open final... Also lost to Federer...
Whenisit123 1 year ago
Deadeye287 1 year ago
@Deadeye287 haha nice recount. I wonder if Andy would be playing any better than he is now if federer wasn't here... but who wants to think about that?! :)
Whenisit123 1 year ago
@Whenisit123 I know my Roddick history lol. Yea I would assume he'd be playing the tennis he played from 01-05, but like 3x better power play with volleys and everything. But yea, we Roddick fans try best not to think about that.
Deadeye287 1 year ago
A classic scenario where Federer creams the American. Same thing happened 2 years ago. There's nothing new about this. Fed's game is just mere perfection, in 09 that is. Where has the old Roger go?

Roddick is more of a man than Federer will ever be. He goes out of his way as a humanitarian. That's worth more than Federer's trophy case.
Konformation07 1 year ago
@Konformation07 I agree. Roddick is much more of a man. I mean, who would want to have 16 Grand Slam trophies? I would personally rather not have any trophies, or one like Andy. That means your a better player anyways. Zero trophies= the better player.
scottdavis0676 1 year ago
@scottdavis0676 you can be sarcastic if you want to but I would honestly have one trophy and be as effective as Roger then have 16 and and be nonexistent to help others.

poor roddick, He's so good but Federer just has, and has always had, his number. People who think he sucks don't know tennis. You don't basically spend your entire career in the top 10 and suck.
federer2899 1 year ago
think how draining this would be. federer kept roddick running all up and down the court the whole match. there's just not much you can do against that kind of skill.

aznking01010 1 year ago
@aznking01010 not at all.Luti is a "coach" but Roger is turning 29 and is 1 step slower;has a back that is acting up and a tight strain.
His movement has been suffering as a result and his shorts are landing short
He needs a real coach to help him out. He still has age on his side and he can still improve imo.
Agassi was forced to retire because of his back but he was still playing great tennis.Larri Passos or Brad Gilbert he should hire
timafi 1 year ago
@timafi Not just that, his footwork, or his 'worse' footwork is also the reason Federer's shanking and mishitting so many forehands now.

Agassi played Federer, Sampras, McEnroe, Lendl, etc., and said Fed was the best by far.
whutbrush 1 year ago
@whutbrush It's hard to say if he's the greatest of all time, because as in any other sport, there's too many variables. Does Federer have an opponent that's as good as Sampras's Agassi? Like you said, Nadal doesn't meet him in that many hard court finals. Not to mention, Agassi and Sampras lost to Federer when they were at the end of their careers. Sampras has beat him in exhibitions before, who's to say that Federer would have the edge over Sampras. I think Fed's the best too but..
DanimalLawlz 1 year ago
Roger is the greatest of all-time. The head-to-head thing is overblown. No boxing expert rates Rocky Marciano above Joe Louis even though he knocked him out. No expert rates Joe Frazier or Ken Norton ahead of Muhammad Ali despite the fact that they both beat him in their first meetings and arguably won 2 of 3. Not to mention the stylistic nightmare they presented to him.
Styles make fights and Rafa's works really well against Roger on clay. That's where 12 of their meetings have taken place.
