  • hi..can you help me figure out the reason for my tv to change from color to color?

  • I think like 99% of people in the world (including me) don't have a fuckin clue how any of their electronics work.

  • Hi Dale Earnhardt. I thought you were dead...

  • TheEgg185 Racing was just to dangerous so I took up TV repair. LOL

  • Hi, I've been watching your videos for the last few weeks, and it's very nice of you of doing them. We all appreciate.

Now, I've got the above tv set, and now, it's been doing some funny noise, and going black. I have managed to get working PSU, Inverter, and Tcon, and I've changed them all, but the problem remains, would you suggest anything else, there's not much else to be the source of the problem, but Main AV board. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

  • @JeffTheDudeLebowski1 I never like to guess at what's wrong with a TV I have never seen or done any tests on, but based on what your saying perhaps the main board is the problem?

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs Thanks for replying so quickly, I think I'll try replacing that, anyway it seems to be the last piece of hardware to change, Thanks once again... I'll try to film the problem to show you over youtube, curiously, the tv has been on for over 2 hours, and no sign of the problem, maybe it's feeling it'l be filmed ;-).

  • You do use the repair manuals don't you or just intuition?

  • @Ibringthetruth1 I mostly use my knowledge and understanding of electronic servicing. Schematics are harder to come by these days, and not as easy to follow as they use to be.

  • crt get one now lcd are junk

  • That inverter board you showed at 4:00 looks like the one out of my Syntex LCD TV.

The pic would not come on.

I found a solution that only cost 2 dollars and was amazed that it worked, not knowing at all how to work on circuits.

The small transformer chip thing labeled OZ960 at the center of the board must have had a problem.

solution was to connect pins 10 and 16 together with a 2V LED light. I just printed the PDF of the thing to make sure i got the pins and polarity right.

    It worked.

  • You are amazing!

  • This guy is the real deal! I have been in the tv repair business for over 25 years, and everything he talks about is proven. With more people fixing their own sets, through the help of Youtube, Ebay, Google, etc. there is still no substitute for experience. Keep up the good work, Grants Pass.

  • I have a Phillips LCD.It was working fine then all of sudden the screen turns black and I have sound only. The picture flickers and tries to come on but it's very dark and flickers.

  • @tmjharp I would guess it's your inverter board or the lamps are going out.

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs I took of the back and laid the TV flat and turned it on.I noticed only about half th lamps lit.My TV has several long thin white lamps. The inverter board on the side that was out had 2 bulging and leaking 35V 680uF capacitors wich actually scarred the curcuit board where it was touching.I replace the capacitors but still had the same problem.I ordered a new slave inverter board and I'm crossing my fingers it will fix the problem. Thanks for the advice.

  • Hi, maybe u can guide a little. I know little electronics (notebook repairs) and I have problems with my lg lcd. It comes on, I have sound, I have backlight and lines with color, but it won't show any image. When I is on for like 10 to 20 minutes, suddenly it goes on and works perfectly all day long until you turn it off, then the process again. I changed a bad capacitor, it didn't worked so I changed all of them, without results.

    Thanks!

  • @groggycl Sounds like it could be the display panel coming unbonded from the tape carrier package but I can't say for sure.

  • I appreciate you making these videos....I am a pc repair guy working on my Sylvania lcd tv....so I have a fair understanding of electronics...all my caps look physically good...when you go to press the power button it tries to turn on...gives a green flash...then shuts down.....i did notice when i plug the unit in an ac outlet it gives a slight spark....

  • @bcbk93 I don't know. You could have inverter board problems. If you watch all my free videos at TV REPAIR INFO . COM you might get a better idea.

  • I not absolutely sure but I think your grounds are reversed, please correct me if i'm wrong

  • @thetvman1 I seem to remember seeing some schematics that used reversed symbols for isolated grounds. The main point is that new repairmen realize not all grounds are connected. If they have a schematic in front of them it should be clear enough.

  • hello, maybe you can help me.. I have a 26" visio lcd tv and I have vertical line or maybe lines when its colder. "colors from 1 red or 1 blue to the whole rainbow of colors, but as it heats up in a few hrs of use the lines all go away, any idea? any help would be great!!!!!

  • Hello again , i visually inspected all the caps in my lcd and much to my disappointment none of the caps appear to look swollen . DARN ! couldnt be easy, so i ask should i try the blow dryer trick? Some of these caps are shrouded by some sort of a metal heat sink or insulator s , do these need to be removed ??

  • @steelwheels327 A majority of capacitors can be checked in circuit using an ESR capacitor tester, I never go by looks alone.

  • I appreciate all your useful info. I am handy enough to make the repairs required given proper instruction .I must say i dont want a career in tv repair or service manuals .I have a Sanyo LCD tv upon turning the set on it takes 20minutes for a picture to appear , then all is well. Everytime i shut off the set for an extended period of time the procedure needs to happen again. I been told was to look for the the probable cause to be capacitor related .....

  • @steelwheels327 Sure sounds like a capacitor problem.

  • I have to wait for 1 min to try to turn it on again and it will turn on juz for 3-4 sec again and it will die again. But if I repeat this processs, the tv will not die on the on my 4th or 5th try, Please help me, I juz need your opinion or quick analysis on this matter. More power!!! We need people like you not juz here in Youtube but here in the Internet.

  • @genrai Probably related to your inverter board or CCFLs

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs thanx, more power to you

  • hi there.great video...I have a strange problem. I have a viewsonic va1916w.When I turn it on it does work normally for 3 maybe 5 minutes and after the screen goes off but the indicating light stays on. I turn off and then on again the monitor with the power on button and then it turns on again and after that it does the same thing. I replaced a damaged capacitor but it didn;t solve the problem. Could you give me any idea of how to solve this. Thank you in advance.

  • @132aris Intermittent problems can be tricky to repair. If it were in my shop I might start by carefully looking for bad solder connections with a times ten magnifier.

  • I have some problem. My laptop's screen had one horizontal line near the top of the screen and the image jitters up and down then after a few seconds it stays still then jitters again.hope you could give some hints on what;s causing the problem, tnx

  • @63LAG With a symptom like that I generally start by warming and or freezing the edges of the display to see it it has any effect. There have been lots of bonding problems on the displays which cause a variety of symptoms.

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs I appreciate your info , but what about us guy's who are handy enough to fix a lcd tv with proper instruction without wanting a career in electronics or service manuals . I have a Sanyo lcd tv and i believe that i might have a capacitor problem upon turning the set on i have sound , but it takes approximately 20 minutes for a picture to appear .If i turn the set off for a period of time it will have to go through the warm up procedure all over again.

  • Can someone help me my grundig lcd tv is broken and it blinks everytime and i hear grrrrrrrrrr when hear the top of the my grundig lcd tv

  • I have a quick question. My Samsung LCD recently developed a perfectly uniform vertical bar of discoloration running down the middle of the screen. It's largely transparent, so you can't always see it, but there is some pixelization within it and the discoloration is very evident when there's a lot of white on the screen. I didn't do anything to the television to start this; it just popped up one night while watching a movie. Any ideas what this might be? Any help is appreciated.

  • @adam2armour It doesn't sound good. You can start by re-seating your ribbon cables between the T-con board and panel to see if that helps but it could also be a bad display, T-con board or display drivers which are bonded to the display panel.

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs

That sounds no good, but I appreciate your help. I called Samsung and they patched me through to the nearest "certified" repair store, a whopping 200 miles away. Thanks, guys. They required $100 down just to give me an estimate, which irked me more than a bit because if I'm going to spend $100 right off and then another several hundred for the repair, I might as well buy a new set.

I haven't been able to find anyone with the exact same problem. I'll upload a video soon.

  • @adam2armour I hear stories like yours all the time. The new TVs just don't last.

  • Yes, i thought so. However, not all is lost. The TV was functioning well so there are salvageable boards inside that I could sell on Cragslist. Do I need any direction here?

  • @sandieguitoadult Just be careful with the T-con board. It is very static sensitive and easily damaged from static discharge. This is also true of many of the other boards. Some wear a ground strap but if you don't have one just make sure your not charged.

  • My 40" LCD Samsung got kicked in. Any chance to home repair (replace) the screen?

  • @sandieguitoadult Other than calling the manufacture I don't know where to buy an LCD screen. They are expensive and many times the cost of this kind of repair exceeds the value of the TV.

  • sir what will be the cause of the LCD is turning white when i open it ....totally white screen

  • @frayeleo0015 It's hard to know for sure but my notes and case histories have several possibilities. T-Con board could be bad, loose or bad ribbon cable, bad caps in the power supply or bad LCD Screen. Start with the simple things you can test like the capacitors.

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs ah...ok thanks just getting idea ....

  • another question does it mather if your capicitor is empty or full if you try it out if its broke ?

  • @007foppe I don't understand your question here but keep in mind a charged microwave capacitor can kill you.

  • I had that book for like 10 years and it really help me I lot on the past. it's nice to see it new again jeje

  • Is that a Ku Klux Klan t-shirt? :L

  • @MrSnowman2 My T-shirt has a picture of Xian warrors not KKK. LOL

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs Ohh my bad, haha sorry.

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs : ) .Well Funny

  • keep it up

  • OH WOW I had that book since I was like 7, im 29 now.. Getting started in Electronics: Great book.

  • this guy is really cool, thanks very much, would like to see more of yours vdo

  • wow wow wow. Love these vids. I have been taking EE in University and feel as if I have learned MUCH more from these videos. Thanks!

  • i have 42 lg plasma tv the problem is no display but on/off, sound and channel is working but monitor is blank please whant cant i do mr...or whant the part is problem..

  • I loved the "you don't want to be a sinner, use the right ground" ...LOL! True sir! I enjoyed watching all your videos, and the explanation of cold vs. hot ground was exceptional, Thanks for posting, -Robert

  • How to down load your book...?what should be type , I mean the Title...

  • @MrTonyshit80

The ebooks I mentioned are listed in the info section under my video. I will send you the link by email. I think the two most helpful books are Jestines power supply book and Johns book on LCD TV repair.

  • I've learned from the video that tv parts are a ripoff when bought from these greedy companies.

  • Thats a dishplayer 7100 mainboard. lol. the powersupply before that is a westinghouse, i have the same TV in the shop now with a dead power supply of the same type. appears the PWM IC is bad. the boost converter hits 388V and hangs there. but no action from the PWM. gets a nice clean 12V to it. so its dead.

  • Hi, can u show how u test the transformers? thanks

  • grantspasstvrepair hi i have a 37 inch lcd tv its a magnavox it started giving me problems with the green light blinking taken long time to come on so i replaced the 2704 capacitor that fixed the problem for about 3 months but now when i push on button there is no blinking light . do you have any idea can you steer me in the right direction . i fixed it when the capacitor was bad and was sucessful but im clueless this time.

  • @saint27573 I can't guess at your problem but often times people get lucky by spotting some bad capacitors and replacing them but they fail to replace the bad capacitors which were not visually defective. I start with the power supply capacitors and move on to the other possible problems like missing voltages and shorted inverter board transistors and transformers.

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs

Good day Dear Bro GPTVR... Actually, I,m Electrician, and expert in wiring and motor control, I can understand easily the chronology and logic sequence in electrical....

But, very difficult to me to understand in electronic fields... I bought more than 3 books about electronic starting from basic...But I fail to understanding the logic sequence in electronic...pls help me..

  • Hi, thanks for making the videos. Would you happen to have a pict of a working samsung ln-t3753H with the back cover removed? I think i might be missing a wire and want to compare mine to a working tv. thanks.

  • Can't help you there but I hope you figure it out.

  • Hi Grant, i recently bought a Metex MS-9150 Universal Test device on ebay, the signal generator was not working and there was a nasty smell, one of the 16 leg ic's was completly melted, it was a removable device but had also destroyed the ic holder, i managed to see the device number and order some more, i'm wondering if it's something else that caused the chip to meltdown, what should i test before replacing the chip? Power drain on the boards powersupply? voltages to the chip? thanks.

  • other excellent books are by Homer Davidson.

I don't think he ever wrote anything on lcd tv's and he recently passed away. But he had some 40 years in the business and I've learned a lot from his books.

Jestine Young is another tech, a young guy in his 30's but he's really good, even though i'm an old guy here I've learned a lot from him.

  • @whiskeyify

I have a couple of Homers books but I don't think he wrote anyhting on the new LCD TVs

Jestines book on switch mode power supplies was very good.

  • I think the most recent book by homer davidson was published around 10 years or so ago.

of course he also wrote articles for electronic servicing magazine, it's since gone out of business.

  • These videos are very insightful. I love the inductors videos. Can you show us the way to build your old very powerful high voltage high amperge transformer?

  • @246246

I can't specifically steer you towards a high current high voltage design, but if you don't need to high of a current tear apart one of those electric bug lights that fry the bugs. I found a step up transformer that put out 3000 volt AC.

  • You know this is also true for people and their cars, my email is full of them.

    Funny, I have that book.

  • @EricTheCarGuy I can imagine. Perhaps you should have a call Eric hotline. 2.99 a minute for my best educated guess. LOL

  • Great idea.
