  • Thanks a lot for uploading this collection. Listening to these songs by great artists we had like Sunil Shantha, Freddy Silva and all who entertained us brought tears to my eyes. Thanks again.

  • I remember reading this in year 8 Sinhalese text book (years back..)..and then later wondering what happened to the last part that was dropped from it...but, I think the last part adds a sense of mischief which makes the song more lively and real...thanks for uploading the original.

  • This brings our memories to 60 years back.

  • A golden voice that will ring in our years for generations to come. Thank you!

  • Isnt the Lyrics slightly different to the later version ?

  • @Tamilonthestreet

Yes It is. The later version has dropped the last part of the original song. Good observation.

  • extrodinary

  • can listen listen listen...again again and again...never feel tired...even with all the noises and quality problems...the song is still one of the most beautifully sung (and of course composed), songs.....

  • very original !

  • Oh its a very low tempoone. Tnx Vidura for uploading such a valuable song.

  • @gayandream

This version is not heard on radio often as the subsequent version was popular and little less too.

    Thanks for your comment Gayan.

  • Where is Shantha me Ra Yame ?

Most beautiful of all Sinhala songs !

  • Tamilonthestreet,

Thanks for your comment. I think people have uploaded that song in youtube.

Yes, its a very nice song.

    regards

  • Do you have the original version of Amaradeva's "Shantha Me Raa Yaame"? That would be nice to see.

  • No, I don't have that

  • I agree with thishanc...this is truly fantastic. Once I searched in most of the record stores, but couldn't get hold of any of his song compilations....I bought albums of C.T. Fernando & Wally Bastian.....but the music is restored.....they don't know the value of original recordings.....I have another album of Baig & Rukmani Devi...same story....new music...but some times it is better than having none...!!!

  • This is a fantastic contribution. Please let me know how to get a whole collection of Sunil Shantha.

  • thishanc,

thanks for your comments. I thought SLBC did a compilation on his songs in a cassette sometime ago, not sure whether they still do. regards, Vidhura

  • Is this from a vinyl disc...the version I've heard before had a bit higher tempo...thanks for posing this with lovely photos...!!

He is one of my Idols...!!!!

  • Aruna,

This is indeed recorded of the vinyl disc from the SLBC long time ago then copied to a tape (spool) by my self, uploaded with some pictures.

This is the first version which was concised later on with a higher tempo like you said.

Its believed that this was recorded in 1940s according to Dr. Tissa Abeysekara who has some input in his book title 'Ayale giya sithaka satahan'. Worth reading if you get hands on in which he mentions 'sinhala sangeethaye punarudaya' etc.

  • Dear Vidhura,

Many thanks for the valuable information...I prefer this version than the high tempo version. I'll try to get that book also. Wikipedia has a nice story about Sunil Santha.

    Regards,

    Aruna

  • Aruna,

I don't know whether you like the song 'Monawada amme akuru Jathiyak mal pethiwala kaudo liyala' song. It has two old versions too in which the slower tempo was recorded first and sung by Priscilla Opatha and Kingsley Jayasekara subsequent higher tempo which was broadcast over the 'Sinhala palamuweni sewaya' in the 1970s and 80s.

Thanks for the Wikipedia info, I will have a look at it.

    regards

    Vidhura

  • Dear Vidura,

I think I have the high tempo version of that song, if you have in your collection, can you upload the older version..??

    Thanks.

    Regards,

    Aruna
