It is recounted in so many places Siddharta or Gautama Buddha chose Pali(brahmi is the script) over Sanskrit. Primarily because Sanskrit had been usurped by the Brahmins as the language of the scholarly and Buddha wanted to communicate to the common man. Given that Buddha was born around 550 BC or so...One understands that Sanskrit existed before 600 BC at the very least..Sanskrit has been traced to around 3500 BC AFAIK (Due to allusions to saraswati river which dried around that time).
