its a jazzmaster guys! look at the long scale neck look at the slightly thinner headstock look at the pickups. the pickup in the middle is custom roberts guitars from 1979 till at least 1985 was only jazzmasters for him. look at the videos from that time 10:15 saturday night, a forest, play for today, other voices, the hanging garden. he still uses them but from those years it was 90% jazzmaster
This is an amazing performance and a very good video (it's priceless!). I enjoyed it thoroughly. Like most of the live versions of 'A Forest', on this one too there is something "special". By the way, that was a nice smile from Robert... made me laugh because I was sort of predicting it!
I know nothing about guitar culture, but Smith's playing always seems to look & sound unique (and very cool!). Could someone let me know what it is about his playing that makes it so unique?
its because he uses delay and echo, hes using a jazzmaster or a jaguar depending what concert which are 2 hardly used guitars and he uses alot of pulling down and up on the strings which changes tempo(look up one hundred years he hardly plays any notes but it sounds liek he is cuz of tempo changes he goes up like 2 or 3 octaves on that)
it's not so much his use of delay and echo, as it is the use of flanger effects. That's the very secret behind Robert's and overall, the Cure's sound, is the use of flanger & delay and a LOT of open strings. This mixture creates this overwhelming, atmospheric, metallic sound you hear so much. It's this sound why I fell in love with them so long ago.
Smith using a Jaguar ? Erm... You'd better revise your classics, my dear. I'd take any picture proving this. You may well mistake a VI for a Jaguar, but then again, a VI is a baritone bass and there are definitely no bounds between these kinds of guitars (except they sport 6 strings). And by the way, I don't quite get how bending strings may affect the tempo of a song...
no i meant tone sorry not tempo and yes that is a jaguar, i have seen him use a jaguar, and no most people would mistake it for a jazz master not a bass or watever the fuck u said
If you like this song I suggest checking out the 'cure mixed up' album version... It has this extra keyboard part which for me 'completes' the song

Just a question. How many pickups does Smith's "Jaguar" feature ?
If the answer is 3, I'm sorry (how polite) to tell you that it's a Fender Bass VI baritone guitar. Nothing to do with a Jaguar...
Smith never played on short scale guitars. The Jaguar is 24". A connoisseur should know that. Respect...
