The way I have always been taught to chip is the same way as Phil Mickelson. If you don't break your wrists a bit all your going to do is top it or catch it fat because it's just so damn hard to consistently return the club to the same spot. How many guys do you see around your course that just plain struggle with chipping because they don't break their wrists? Fairly high proportion isn't it. well aoxomoxoa how i see it is i usually chip from the fringe or the rough close to green i use my lob-6 iron to chip from close to far. now i use my pitch from 100 yards in because with a lob wedge i do 100 full swing and all my pitches are the same distance weird.. i know but i use my pitching wedge for a low flight and sand wedge for medium height and lob for high flight i do it with w.e feels comfortable for me most times but when there a lot of wind my system helps.

Pitch and chip, there's not a lot between them I think, apart from distance. Chips are more close range, requiring more dexterity and control of club speed. A flop shot is when you open the club face to such an extent that the trajectory of the ball is at times, at right angles to the swing. So as a right handed player you aim well left of target but because the face of the club is so open the ball flies of to the right with a high lob. You can make an eight iron behave as a lob wedge, this way.
I recently bought that Phil Mickelson video "secrets of the short game", but I am still trying to understand when to play the certain shots, and how to play them.....

Definition of a chip is when the ball has less air time and more roll, also the there will be no break in the wrists during the swing and the clubhead will not overtake the hands and the hands will stay below waist height.
So he has used a pitching technique with some personal adaptation. Perhaps he should reply and tell us, he is sure gonna have plenty of spare time nowadays

now tony bones your wrong, you have 5 clubs to pitch with a pitch is more life a shorten up swing so to get under the ball in a situation like in the ruff to make the ball jump i would use a lob wedge

well aoxomoxoa how i see it is i usually chip from the fringe or the rough close to green i use my lob-6 iron to chip from close to far. now i use my pitch from 100 yards in because with a lob wedge i do 100 full swing and all my pitches are the same distance weird.. i know but i use my pitching wedge for a low flight and sand wedge for medium height and lob for high flight i do it with w.e feels comfortable for me most times but when there a lot of wind my system helps.

That was perfect. Notice how hips turn towards the target on his back swing. Very good technique to use when hitting short shots.

Pitch and chip, there's not a lot between them I think, apart from distance. Chips are more close range, requiring more dexterity and control of club speed. A flop shot is when you open the club face to such an extent that the trajectory of the ball is at times, at right angles to the swing. So as a right handed player you aim well left of target but because the face of the club is so open the ball flies of to the right with a high lob. You can make an eight iron behave as a lob wedge, this way.

I recently bought that Phil Mickelson video "secrets of the short game", but I am still trying to understand when to play the certain shots, and how to play them.....

True. You can tell its a flop because of all the wrist action. It is not a pitch shot. A pitch is shot from a longer distance with wider leg stance.

this is a pitch, a chip is a short ball flight and a long roll, that thing went straight up and will probably come to rest about 2 or 3 feet from where it lands

i agree, its a pitch. A pitch is a shot where the ball is in the air more than it rolls. obviously, he was trying to carry it to the hole and not roll it. Pitch, not chip.

@bjsmaligalig070885 Sorry buddy, but a chip is when the ball come of the clubs face with a significant spin rate and goes much higher than a chip. This is a chip shot, i think i would know. I am a 9 handicap.
