Hello Donald, I'm getting some seed potatoes this weekend, and have never planted potatoes before. Do you ever plant your's in the late fall? Or let them sit in the ground over winter? -Eric
@ELHIEGER1 ...In zone 8 Sept. 10th is about the latest date to plant potatoes. Since you got em go ahead and roll the dice, you may make a bumper crop before a killing frost gets em.....Donald
So one of them is a 'she'. Anyway both the labs are getting to be very popular. I am watching them from Malaysia. They are enjoying international status now. The day you show us that they also know how to plant a veggie, is the day I will definitely kidnap them :) Thanks for all the vids. My family enjoyed it so much. We are actually learning how to do things from you. You are a kind man. God bless you!
I'm supposed to be a farmer but haven't been able to grow potatoes worth a damn. I see a lot of important info in your vid...I think you're gonna be our potato guru. Please keep posting, this stuff is solid gold. BTW the dogs are the best part. Is your soil sandy loam?
you sir are living history .... the all american farmer ! great vid i also feel for you , your back & neck probably hurts at the end of the day. you would think by now someone wouldve stuck a backup camera from an suv on the rig so you dont have to turn 180 all the darn time! aloha
My seed potatoes had 6 to 12 inch stems growing on them before i planted them. I always just cut one eye and they always sprout. Some times i only plant a quarter sized peice and it still comes up. I love how easy they are to grow
question i planted potatoes and after not showing up for a bit i dug up a few and foud them all melted like mash potatoes and nothjng comming up now some were but a few did this why
Is it too late to start potatoes this year? Like you, I also live in zone 8 (maybe 9), except I'm in the central valley of California. Appreciate the vids! - Eric
Today is the first time I came across your videos, they are great!!
I can't wait to start my garden this year, but there is still plenty of snow covering it.
Last summer, I started a patch of asparagus (50' x 50'), and with the hard winter we got, I am crossing my fingers that they have not suffer too much.
Anyway, still about 2 months to wait until I can put my feet in the garden.
I stacked them on the rack to allow them to heal for a few days before planting. Plans were changed because of rain and I planted the same day. Checked them today and no sign of them coming up. Will try digging tomorrow and see if there are any trying to come up...... Donald
I notice you said they are 'seed potatoes' at the start does this mean if I try to grow the ones from the store that also have 'eyes' on them they won't grow?
I've never planted any vegetable that came out of a store. I would think that store bought potatoes would grow, just not sure how well they would do...... Donald
Potatoes are really easy to grow. You do have to keep pulling dirt up to em to get a good crop. Not sure how well these will do because they already have two strikes against them. I couldn't give them time to heal and not sure about the lack of eyes on em. First time both of those issues have come up for me.
I can't wait for that knot head dog to grow out of all that. Shes funny but a hand full right now. Thanks ...... Donald
Defense is suppose to be her job HAHAHHHAAH Poor Lucy !!! We have a black female lab that is staying with us while she recovers from A. being spayed and B. Heartworm treatment...coming along fine & will be transported to CO on Wed. I will miss her terribly.
The Texan told us that he had been kicked out of that very steakhouse for being drunk & disorderly haha. .He sent us in the opposite direction - back roads to Ardmore OK....... He sat & drank his beer watching us disappear out of sight. hahahaha
Hubby & I bought a van in San Antonio a few mths ago - went to pick it up & decided we just couldnt leave Texas without having a Texan steak so off we went following our GPS directions - which led us to a ranch field & announced that we had reached our destination? Before we could get turned around to give up & back to the interstate along came a big Texan, in a #227 just like yours cajun...big can of beer in his paw & when we asked about the restaurant we were trying to find the Texan contd
LOOKOUT LUCY he is going into another gear !!! He loves you to bits and would never send you off to another home...bet he would defend you against the meanest varmints in the land ! Thanks Cajun for such awsome vids !
You're welcome. Had quite a few requests to do videos on canning vegetables so guess you'll see a few on that this year. In fact you may see one within a week or so...... Donald
That Darn Lucy ... she makes me laugh though! She does add more character to the videos though. Cant wait to do my videos this season so you all can meet Logan, my side kick!!
She gets blamed for everything that is either destroyed or missing around here. Hope she gets out of that puppy stage soon. Looking forward to meeting Logan...... Donald
I showed my husband the video and he laughed all the way through it, we love your dogs........................."there awesome there like your side kicks. they make the video". words from my husband.
The person who coined the phrase "man,s best friend" was right on the mark. Since I retired both have become even more attached. They are never far away the whole time I'm outside...... Donald
man them taters are gonna taste good comin out dat crawfish pot.
can't plant yet, ground froze up, it's 28 degrees here tonite. bbbrrrrrr.... maybe in a couple more weeks. still got work to do on the "big" garden. have to make a vid and show you what i got planned.
You probably have another 6 weeks of prime planting time left so it's no rush. If you miss the spring planting there is always a fall crop which you could plant in August...... Donald
I am in San Antonio Texas and this is my first time gardening. I love your videos, I check everyday to see if you added a video. Since this is my first time I am trying decide what to grow/plant. My question is....How many potatoes will come from each half you put in the ground?
There are a lot of variables that can affect the outcome such as weather, fertilization, hilling, variety, spacing, etc. In previous years I have harvested anywhere from just a few to over a dozen. They would range in size from an inch in diameter to several inches across and bigger. Potatoes form from the roots up so hilling or how much dirt you pull up the plant stem as they grow probably affects the number more than anything...... Donald
It will be interesting to see if they make a crop. Like I said in the video, they were lacking eyes and they were not allowed to heal before planting. That is two strikes against them so guess we will just have to wait and see...... Donald
I got a good chuckle outta Lucy's "help". I had to plant my tomatoes in a fenced area to keep him off of them. He picks them off the vine and eats them. Its his favorite treat!
i hope those sprout cause if you dont let them dry before you plant they might rot in the ground. or maybe its just me, iv never had any luck with potatoes
I know exactly what you're talking about. Butif I would not have planted the same day and gotten a whole lot of rain then it would have been a repeat of last year, no potatoes at all. Out of that 300 ft. row I'm hoping to get a few at least....... Donald
Ought to see when I hooked my garden trailer up to it. With all my tools hanging out I look like a junk dealer. Last year I had a battery cable that went out, I was in a panic not knowing what I was going to do without it. Jumped in my truck and went buy wire and terminals to get her fixed. Now I have a supply on hand. A lot more mileage gets put on that golf cart than my truck, no joke...... Donald
LOL, did I ever tell u about the pitbull that gardens? I got a rescue from a friend that could no longer keep him. The first week or 2 I had him I kept him tied to the cable when he was outside. Well, one day I was in the garden spreading cow manure and there was a bag beside him, he figured out that the bag beside him was what I was throwing about. He opened the bag and scratched it out til he could pick it up then shook it out like I was doing. He looked so proud of himself for helping me.
It's getting harder and harder to love "that sweet puppy". You ought to give potatoes a try they are real easy to grow. Fresh potatoes taste a whole lot different than what you buy in the store...... Donald
Ive had fresh potatoes when I was a kid and loved em, but my garden is so tiny I hadnt considered planting them in mine. Maybe I will try some in my brothers garden. Thanks again! Daryl
Hi 1DRock....maybe try growing some taters in a bucket/planter....there are Youtubers who have great luck with this method.....see Pioneerliving for a great vid on the subject. Best of luck !
Donald, uuuhhhhhhhh! You have a few skips in your row!!!!! hahahaha! I had to watch it twice because I was laughing so hard the first time!!! Lucy needs her own Youtube channel! Great video......Greg
I didn't know she was doing that until I started editing/watching the video. I was mad and laughing at her at the same time. She took the first one right under my nose. I sure hope she gets out of that puppy stage soon. I can't remember the last time I read the local paper...... Donald
When I picked them up yesterday I forgot to ask. When I got home I tried reading the label but it had been sewn through. Guess it will be a surprise if they make that is...... Donald
Labs like beer too. Maybe get him drunk first so he doesn't eat your potatoes. Just kidding.

I didn't know she was doing that until I started editing/watching the video. I was mad and laughing at her at the same time. She took the first one right under my nose. I sure hope she gets out of that puppy stage soon. I can't remember the last time I read the local paper...... Donald

I'm going to have to start keeping an even closer eye on her in the future. She wasn't eating them, just hauling em off.

What kind of potatoes are they?

When I picked them up yesterday I forgot to ask. When I got home I tried reading the label but it had been sewn through. Guess it will be a surprise if they make that is...... Donald

Our last frost date is sometime around the end of March. It's just time to plant em in my area.
