why would they destroy fine piece of art ? Ottomans covered them to be politically correct, not because they cannot stand them, conversion was their way, instead of destruction
The next you will see the the cross on the dome and the liturgy glorifying the almighty Jesus Christ King of Kings that was never finished when the ottomans took over, long live Byzantium long live Orthodoxy,May the blessing of our Lord and theotokos be with all
It's a seraphim (6-winged) angel for those that don't know anything about hagiography. It's a beautiful piece of art. Hagia Sophia means a lot to the Greek people and Christians alike.
It was covered under the Muslim injunction against idolatry. While I don't agree with it, hey, that was the 15th century we're talking about. I seriously doubt a Buddhist temple captured by Christians would have left a huge gold Buddha sitting in it if they turned it into a Catholic Church...
It happens whenever one regime overthrows another. The US went into Iraq and pulled down Saddam's statues. Nobody likes Saddam very much, but one day historians will what to know more about how things were, and lament that none of the statues were preserved. All the Ottomans did was basically to cover up the enemy's symbols and paint their own on top. I don't see how they could have been any less barbaric or destructive.
Different culture, different style different art. What did you expect?Angels like we pictured them now? And,no offense, face+wings=you answer that.thanks.
I'm just saying it could be something OTHER than an "angel". The point is, we don't REALLY know, so we can't just declare it to be what we want it to be. For instance, a more reasonable and objective public statement is that "it APPEARS akin to a human face; and, PERHAPS it MAY represent a historical or mythical figure".
Soon the whole structure will restored to its original form. It will yake years but will happen

SHAME ON AP for trying to depict the "intolerant Turks/Muslims" image based on incorrect information!

FOR EVERYONE'S INFORMATION. The Seraphim figure was NOT covered "shortly after the city fell into Ottomans in 1453". It was covered around 1840s!!

It's rather strange and puzzling.
Why did the Ottomans leave all of those symbols and pictures and alike? They simply covered them instead of destroying them. It's really mysterious.

Why do they call it angel? Did anybody saw an angel and then painted it or gave a form of it ? a lot of things needs to be rethought...

They'd have to cover it up again in Iran. I'm glad that not every Muslim nation is batshit insane.
