why versus at all? XD You can't compare them between themselves. They are on the same lines, but work with very different aesthetics, fuels, and ideas. XDD Jesus Christ ppl! Get some common sense and appreciate them individually without trying to compare them! I wear both. So if I can, so can you.
Alright, since I am kinda sick of people comparing steampunk and dieselpunk (while you can easily spot the difference just by looking at few photos/videos) , I will give you a short, simple explanation.
Steampunk is science fiction that incorporates elements of the Victorian era. Dieselpunk is similar, but it pulls its inspiration from WWI - 1945 (the Jazz age) and merges them with something modern.
So, while a Steampunk girl may wear a bustle dress with brass cog details everywhere, a Dieselpunk girl might dress like a 1920s flapper or a WWII-era Rosie the Riveter with some modern flairs like a brass-knuckles purse or an Art Deco iPod. This style bleeds into our art & literature as well.
ok lemme get this strait, Dieselpunk and Steampunk, are about the same thing just in different time lines right? Like there a futuristic past, except ones a Victorian time line, and the other during the 1950's. Other than that I understand it, UNLESS its the future steampunk, like with cars with lazers, and tanks with, like, ray guns, and pin up girls with googles. Woh this is awsome!
@Eriexsis Dieselpunk falls in the timeline of 1920s to 1950s, and steampunk in the Victorian Era. Dieselpunk follows the same lines as steampunk in terms of technology - it's current, or future, stuff made retro - but for the difference that steampunk tech is run on steam, and dieselpunk is run of diesel fuel. Each is done in the styles of their respective eras.
Oh, and airships. Steampunk has dirigibles, and blimps, whilst dieselpunk tends to have WW1-WW2 style iron battleships that fly.
@ThePitofSidLord I'd be interested to see some "Edwardian Punk" work in that same Retro-Futuristic vein.
However short it was, the Edwardian Era spawned not only the Wright Brothers and a Flying machine motif not unlike the Airships of the Victorian Era, but there's also Albert Eistein and, IIRC Madame Curry.
Seems like there would be a lot there to work with.
@ThePitofSidLord Not necessarily true. Zeppelins also rule the skies in Dieselpunk. Dieselpunk falls within the 1900s-1950s, so it covers the FIRST World War as well, same with the first flight of the Wright Brothers.
@NYCPulpHero Okay then, smart ass. What does "pulp" music sound like? What does "pulp" architecture look like? What does Art Deco have to do with pulp? If dieselpunk is "pulp," then where's the love for Conan the Barbarian and the dozens of other pulp genres that aren't represented at all in dieselpunk?
I can respect people when they love something, but when you try to start a fight about something you obviously know nothing about, you come across as an idiot.
Steampunk and dieselpunk BOTH rock. Enough said.

The next generation will be greenpunk where people are huddled together in cold lightless hovels wearing coats made of kudzu and cowshit.

I like the idea of Steampunks and Dieselers being at odds. :P

Why do they need to compete at all? There's room for all of the *punk genres and each has its own strengths for making good art.

It shouldnt be steampunk vs dieselpunk it should be steam &dieselpunk vs Cyberpunk!
MijjiMcz 3 months ago
Yes. They both take a style from the 1920s - 1945 and combine them with a contemporary style to make something new.

Does Rocketeer and Noir Spider-Man count as Dieselpunk?

Alright, since I am kinda sick of people comparing steampunk and dieselpunk (while you can easily spot the difference just by looking at few photos/videos) , I will give you a short, simple explanation.
Steampunk-industrial revolution, steam (obviously), Victorian Era.
Popular game influenced by Steampunk:Syberia.
Dieselpunk-WW1, WW2. first half of 20th century, diesel (obviously)
Very popular game inspired by Dieselpunk-original Fallout.
Any question? USE GOOGLE. Thank you.

Pity that so little has been done in this vein.
