@megamanthehitman _ i don't know of any Universities in the west. But you could probably learn it where they live outhern Egypt and Northern Sudan if you are willing.: )
@megamanthehitman - I'm sure there are some students over here at some of the major Universities that can tutor u (if u are from the U.S.). Unfortunately I don't know of any off hand.
No, just English and French and used to know some Arabic, not much anymore though. i do have a copy of Rosetta stone but haven't had a chance to get to it. Rosetta stone is a cd or computer software you can purchase that enables people to learn languages. pretty expensive though, and I don't know if Nubian is on there..
Once i said to Hamza ..."that's a beautiful drum (Tar, framedrum)". He handed it to me and said, "play it like it were your heart" ! still playing thirty years later.
TO ME,HAMSA WAS ONE OF MY GREATEST TEACHERS ,,, WE DID THEATER , MUSIC, POETRY TOGETHER AND HE TRAINED MY FRIENDS AND ME IN ISLAMIC PRACTICE IN 1975 AMD 1977 TO PERFORM WITH THE SUFIS :THE COSMIC MASS AND THE COSMIC CELEBRATION IN NEW YORK AND BOSTON...MY PIR SUFI PIR VILAYAT KHAN DIRECTED OUR ECUMENCICAL GROUP OF MORE TAHN 300 INDIVIDUALSUNITED IN LOVE... PEACE....SALAMS SHALOM PAZ
is there anywhere i can download his music for free? the first time i heard him was on a live grateful dead album and havent been able to get enough of him since.
Weird - my vinyl copy on the LP 'eclipse' has no oud like this does - only the percussion/handclaps. And it's definately not a technical mono/stereo problem with my soundsystem.
Hamza El Din was a priceless gift to music-lovers everywhere. His music has a slow, gentle, meditative quality to it that has all but disappeared from our modern noisy and frenetic civilization. In that respect, parallels can be drawn with medieval European ecclesiastical chant. Unfortunately, Hamza is deceased now, but his music will live on for ages to come in the hearts of all who cherish music which comes straight from the soul.
This man played with the Grateful Dead in Cairo in 1978, there is a live CD & DVD that was released, I just found out, it's called "Rocking The Cradle" Egypt 1978 I have to check this guy out more, he's awesome!
Absolutely beautiful. I have never heard of this man before and I will look further. This is trance like in it best possible sense. Was the man a sufi? I came to this page via a search for Lute music, the wonders of you tube!
