I saw this intriguing film years ago in a college sociology of religion class. Really pleased to see it again here. I don't doubt the depth of conviction of these people. Appalachia is not nearly as poor as it was in 1967, however. The mountains are no longer so isolating. Modern culture must have had its effects on Appalachia and I wonder if there is much snake handling there these days.
this video is something else. the fact that people are inspired by these dangerous rituals even to this day is insane to me. it's like nothing can get through to them. little kids handling rattlesnakes, with babies in the same room. tossing rattlesnakes to one another. it's simply ridiculous and embarrassingly primitive. but an excellent film, nonetheless.

I think personally that there might be something neutralizing about all that positive, Holy Spirit Energy that keeps those snakes quiet enough to be held. Who knows, it might even work on the molecules of the poison, too. Just because we don't have scientific proof yet, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Christian Holiness has alot going for it. Followers are expected to totally abstain from alcohol, drugs, and violence. They are expected to be kind and compassionate to everyone, including "sinners" and Christians of other traditions. Holiness congregations strictly enforce these expectations on themselves. If people could quit fixating on the "Signs Following" they would see just how Christ-like most Holiness folks are.

I am sure these people are fine people who mean well.I am sure they love Christ and he loves them.They are misled however when it comes handling the snakes.The Bible says not to tempt the "Lord thy God" and that is what they are doing.This is why many of them get bites from the snakes and some of them die from the snake bites.
They shall take up serpents doesn't mean to make some religious ritual of taking up snakes in meetings. Paul was preaching and a snake CAME at him, Paul didn't take a snake from the ground and do some religious ritual with it. Taking up serpents rather means that we take authority over principalites and spirits which is a lot more serious.
To me, if people have to do that in meetings it shows me that not much is happening in the spirit. These people never believed Paul made a habit of it, nor do they take up snakes every week.There are alot of things in alot of churches done today that are not in total scriptural context.But you also have to look at the culture , people and factor in the lack of education , and ignorance involved when some of the leader interpreted the scripture.God knows the hearts of these people.

Oh yes there are. Research for yourself. The Name Jesus is used and the word God was used by all of the founding fathers all the time. George Washington at Valley Forge fell on his knees in the snow and begged God for help. Of course, you wouldn't be worthy to loosen his boot strings.

I don't personally believe much in the bible so I couldn't help but to think how interesting it might be to see what some religious scholars of years past would say about this. Karl Marx the "scholar" comes to mind (not the misused Marx associated with "communists" like Stalin). Blasphemy, I know but still interesting.

I do not agree with a lot of the emotionalism. I apologize for my remark. I was filled by the Holy Ghost 25 years ago so that I know that is true, but I never understood why the same people were actin' like they were recieving the infilling, every week. Water baptism is an outward sign of an inward manifestation of regeneration through Jesus Christ by his Spirit through his shed blood on the cross! You don't recieve the Holy Ghost everyday, that would implt you lose it everyday! You either have the Holy Ghost, or you don't, and in the times that we live we sure need Him to empower us to fight the good fight everyday! Peace to you friend!!

I get tired of people who make fun of the snake handlers.. call them evil... or act like they are freaks. Maybe they arent doing the right thing (in some of our opinions).. but they are generally doing this out of faith & believe they are doing it for God..

I am sure these people are fine people who mean well.I am sure they love Christ and he loves them.They are misled however when it comes handling the snakes.The Bible says not to tempt the "Lord thy God" and that is what they are doing.This is why many of them get bites from the snakes and some of them die from the snake bites.

They shall take up serpents doesn't mean to make some religious ritual of taking up snakes in meetings. Paul was preaching and a snake CAME at him, Paul didn't take a snake from the ground and do some religious ritual with it. Taking up serpents rather means that we take authority over principalites and spirits which is a lot more serious.

To me, if people have to do that in meetings it shows me that not much is happening in the spirit. When GOD really moves, you don't need to find snakes nad do all these rituals.People rpeent, are set free, REAL snake spirits and divnination, leviathan principalities and spirits are cast down and change comes.Check it out....
