I think a 125mm Canyon can destroy a M1, the problem is that this variants were so bad, their tactics were completly out dated, their crew suck... Still the T-72 is quite outdated compared the abrams, a T-90 or a T-80 native variants might fall better tough.

I wonder what would have happened if T=72's were at least semi-modern could fire missiles and fired old konkurs missiles at ranges over 4km...that would have changed the situation a bit. not to mention that fighting abrams in flat desert is moronic!

@boobtuber06 Sabot's don't create much dispersed kinetic energy, by definition they're penetrators. Large ammounts of energy in a small area to penetrate armor. The sabot itself wont cause the turret to pop, but the havoc it plays with the ammo certainly will.

@urmo345 No.. the T-72 Export version, or "Monkey Model" as the Russians called it, was not a good tank. It was good against similar stripped down export tanks... But if you were to put an Iraqi T-72 up against say, a Russian T-72, the difference would be like night and day.

@GShock112 And which enemy might that be? China's Army fields mostly Type 80's series and Type 96. Their total numbers are still less than the 8,500 odd Abrams tanks in service at any given time. Russian tanks.....well yeah. These might be knocked down export versions but even a native T-72 wouldn't fair much better. Russia doesn't have enough T-80s or T-90s to overwhelm the Abrams and neither of them are even a match one one. Also, low Morale? Did you miss where there were few retreats?

First off the Western allies only fought about 20-25% of the German armed forces, the Russians fought 70% and inflicted most of the causilities, and that''s not counting the all of Germany's allies as well, the Allies never fought against either the Romainians, or the Hungarians, or the Slovaks. Second off, the Sherman was a very good tank, and fought well against the Panzer 3 and 4, which it was designed to engage.

@canadaloveswhiskey The Sherman was fast and powerful up close yes, however the Panzer was better armored and had better guns, about the only reason the Sherman did well against it was becase it was fast enough to hit the Panzer in the side or the back were armor was weak, also for the fact we had more Shermans the the Germens had Panzers.

But I was refering to the more common Panzer 4 and panzer 3s which the Sherman was able to engage and destroy reliably at normal combat ranges. The Tiger was a pretty lousy tank to be perfectly honest, and the Panther had so many mechanical problems that most were lost because of mechanical faliures, while the Sherman itself could be repaired from tractor parts.

@GeassKnight1 The Tiger was lousy, because of all the resources that it took to build one. If I remembered right, a single tigger cost as much as three Panzer 4, and a King Tiger cost about five. The suspension was also crap, and the engine was underpowered and faulty. What good is something that can kill just about everything, when its so expensive that the enemy out numbers you six to one?

This really isn't so much a battle, as a trial by fire, combat test of the M1A1 Abrams and M2 Bradley while facing a real enemy. Iraqis, for all their bravery, they really didn't stand anything even remotely reminiscent of a chance in their T-72s. They couldn't get any sort of air support, not with F-15s ruling the skies. Honestly, if they had fully equipped T-72s, they might have had a slight chance. T-90s however, would have made it a much more even fight.

to penetrate M1 side armor is not harder than t72 but m1 have protected armor storage, so the penetration did not causes ammo detonation easy, t72 all modifications(exept t90 it was not prowed yet) get 78% of ammo detonation in case of penetration so thats a kiss good night tanks

@66chokri Events in this are drawn out so you can know what happened. In reality, the whole thing probably took less than two minutes. Have you ever tried hand cranking a tank turret around? It takes a while. Each bradley has 2 TOWs loaded, and one reloaded, while the other was freaking out the tank crew of a T-72 by bouncing bullets off it's turret after the pair of them killed 4 other tanks.

Guys am not trying to criticize the M1 but they also had advantage because they were in a Desert Environment which is wide open and easier for the Abrams and Harder for the T-72. If this was a Jungle... trust me the Abrams would ve still won but the difference on losses would've been a lot bigger...

In the hands of the right commanders a tank like the T-72 could have been more effective. Without the right commanders the T-34 the tank that broke through Hitlers lines of Panzers might have had the same results as the T-72. If George S. Patton command T-72's it would have been a much more effective tank I think its safe to say (not that Patton would have gone anywhere near a tank made by those Russian SOB's as he might have said).

I don't think they had the same level of media coverage at the BOK as at some of the other great tank battles. While sick to say, it's too bad. Kursk was aguably the quintesential battle of tactical docterine and technology .vs. overwhelming numbers. And, of course, it also proved that no matter how superior your war machine is to the enemy's, it's your logistics and your ability to resupply under fire the will inevitably influence the outcome.
