Very reminiscent of Roger Allam. Did he play the rest of the role with the same kind of rigidity as Allam's Javert? (No, that isn't a knock on either performance. Allam's Javert is my favorite.)
@NotQuiteUseful I saw him a year ago in the LM UK tour, and yes it was a little reminiscent of Roger. I loved the way he added a very clipped accent to his voice, which matched the rigidity of his stature and movements. It worked VERY well, especially when next to John Owen Jones who acted JVJ with so much passion *_* He's now one of my favourite Javerts ever.
This guy is ok, but Philip Quast is the one and only Javert. I have to admit Norm Lewis from the 25th anniversary edition is better than this guy ever could be.
With all my respect, I LOVE Quast, but when I heard Fred Johanson singing Stars I was so surprised^he did SO MUCH better! Here is a link: youtube.com/watch?v=v8Sv2J7nGmY
I'm going to see him in Detroit, and I've been looking up some of the people playing lesser roles in the cast. it's so great to see that at least the MAIN roles are awesome and don't sound like they belong on american idol!
I saw Earl 3rd August 2009 when I saw Les Mis for the very first time. I then saw Hans Peter-Janssens and then Norm Lewis at the O2 Concert. Which was the best for me? Earl. Earl was awesome. So good, that they couldn't get Roger Allam for the O2 concert One Day More finale (he was performing at the Globe Theatre) so they had Earl, and I thought it was Quast! Honestly, he's an AMAZING Javert.
This man is brilliant. He has a very very unique take on Javert ... he's Posh!Javert. XDD I saw him in the UK tour cast this year and he was fantastic. Paired with John Owen Jones ... wow.
I don't know if you know this but when Earl sang this recording for Radio 2 he was choked with a cold and a severely sore throat. how good would he have been if his voice was at its best?
@ForeverBloomingRose And by the way, do you know exactly what programme this was on? I'm on ITunes trying to see if it's still available as a podcast. :)
@aisantaiki I know he'll be on the 25th Anniversary Tour CD, which will be released sometime next year, and will also have (in my opinion) the best Valjean ever, John Owen Jones. Just think: the greatest Valjean ever paired with one of the best Javert's ever on a cast album
earl is javert in the queens theatre till 10th october but someone knows who will perform after him? too bad im going 22th october..:-( i really like his voice..
I saw Le Mis with my daughter in London, and I must say that Earl played this stiff policeman wonderfull. I like Wim van de Driessche from the dutch version, but this was with much more feeling. The theater clapped very long, of couse also on Bring Him Home. The Englisch version is 10 times better !! Keep up the good work.
He has talent, but unfortunately he came after Phillip Quast, who is and always will be the "supreme" Javert, his character will always be one that people judge the new javerts
I've just seen him in concert on the Isle of Wight...and he was stunning. Now I'm going to go to London to watch him, and David Thaxton as Enjolras and David Shannon as Valjean - they were incredible...
When i watched im not sure if it was this guy or the understudy. Possibly the understudy but he was not so hot on his timing. In the confrontation he was a bit behind David Shannon!
Earl has an amazing voice!!

This guy sounds good. Wish I had seen or heard the rest of the musical with him in it. Although, I still prefer Quast.

Norm Lewis isn't up to holding Carpenter's coat for him. It took the piss that for the 25th show the best Javert on the stage was playing the bishop.
