@BSer21 Think of using the "whole" hand, not any particular fingers. Have a relaxed wrist and hand, which makes the shot more repeatable. Look at the new clips I put on my website (swish22.com) on the home page (look for "Laura," "Mary-Eileen" and "Alexis." I got these clips during research and filming for Swish 3, to be on Free Throws, out by September, I hope.
@SwishCoach ok thank you! But to me it looks like Stephen Curry is emphasizing his shot on some particular fingers but I can clearly see how he relaxes his hand
@YtVideosHaha This "horrible" form is the way Steph Curry shoots (exactly), and Steve Nash, Diana Taurasi, Becky Hammon, etc. Watch them in slow motion and you will see the relaxed wrist and hand.
lol ray allen is an exceptiont though but this method anyone can do and ise asy. Ray probably practiced that shot days and days this method probably takes a couple of hours to master
@flyerrr911 Yes, they both work with form and what to do with the form (how to control direction and distance). The video clips on my "Shooting Gallery" page show the result. The form is exactly what Steph Curry is doing, and Steve Nash does and Kerr and Mullin did, as well as Diana Taurasi and Becky Hammon.
@flyerrr911 Strength matters only a little. You need some strength but not so much. The arm-straightening motion sends the ball only 5-8 feet for most people, legs providing the rest.
do you want the ball to be tight on your thumb and fingertips so its easy to control or do you want the ball to just lay on your fingertips and thumb so your opposit hand would have to help bring the ball to the set point without the ball slipping?
Thanks for the note. Tell me what Chris Mullin said and where/when. I've been trying to make contact with him for years. We met in 1999/2000 and again ~2005. Thanks for the help. -- Tom Nordland
@junboy2004 No, I didn't coach him, but I did meet him last spring and gave him my Swish 2 video. I told him my video reveals exactly what he is doing that makes him so good. I hope to spend time with him on a court soon to share ideas. As to his technique, it's the same as what Chris Mullin taught himself and Diana Taurasi likewise, and Hornacek, Kerr, Sue Bird, Becky Hammon, etc. All self-taught, I'm sure. If not hounded to "Square up," etc., players wind up looking the same.
Tom I have learned a lot from these videos however I've found that for pull up jumpshots especially it is very hard to turn my feet to the open stance. And does using this method require the triple threat position to be in an open stance too?
@smsteveo2332 Practice and awareness. Shoot a lot against a wall, observing, feeling, experimenting, exaggerating, etc. You've got to become a "Learner." Shoot without a ball and you can easily start relaxing the wrist and hand, and then add a ball (against a wall for awhile to eliminate the pressure of a basket. You'll figure it out.
haha, thats psychology: show girls that can shoot better than you(but not me^^) so you buy the dvd train like a mofo. I´d do that if I couldn´t shoot.^^
I don't understand, how to shoot the ball without flip my wrist and get my hand and wrist relax ? If i don't flip my wrist there's no backspin on my shot
If you are having trouble aligning hand, ball and shooting eye, this is because you are not opening your body for your shot. If you just open up slightly, you will naturally align.
people are so suprise people can swish these days i do it my friends be like dangg im its easyif you pratice every day you will get it i mean its easy
ok, let's say my height is the same as yours and I stretch my arm up when I'm defending you. What will you do? I'll have height advantage to block you of at least 60cm (if you are using the swish method).
for example, try to shoot when a defender is contesting you (I mean, really trying to do that, not just standing nearby). Then consider that if a ball hits at least the backboard, you make the points. Your shooting at game would be like that AFTER you have mastered your release.
how the hell has shooting bacame a lost art????????? whats he talkin about, no offence but where im from no one can dunk errr sooo i think its safe to say shooting is the only art out there we are trying to master
This is the PROPER way to shoot, not flipping your wrist! What was key to me for getting this beautiful method was the release and how it has to be the same even on long range shots. Upforce is just what gets it there and this takes practice and observation to capture a lot of...Anyone who doesn't get this method needs to go back to the pure release distance and truly be aware. Also, notice where the power is coming from, the lower body or wrist!
@happykid1234 I don't understand, how to shoot the ball without flip my wrist and get my hand and wrist relax ? If i don't flip my wrist there's no backspin on my shot
This method works. The shooting in the video is used to show the mechanics of the shot, or in essence how to learn how to control the flight of the ball, which the swish method is aimed to do. There is no game footage in this video and so that is not enough proof to say that this will not work in a game. I attend a university and am known for my shooting. There is no problem using this method in games if you have learned it correctly.
at the range most of these guys are shooting, i think its better (especially in a game) to use the backboard. For free shooting though, its a very useful technique. i can't see this working in a game though
I have used this method for almost 5 years now and I have no problem getting my shot off. Why would you want to shoot a jump shot without any space at all between you and the defender? because thats the only way I can think of not being able to get this shot off.
I purchased your video, watched it, and practiced. After 2 months of practicing, I have regressed as a shooter, not able to score like I used to. My shot is high, I align ball with eye and target, relax wrist, open stance, shoot quickly, everything you tell us in the video. However, my accuracy has been poor. Im short on shots midrange and 3 point range. When i bend and move the ball towards the set point, I hit the ball at my face, a variable I can't seem to fix. Can you give me some tips?
:X Great shooting! Im just shooting alot to practice it, making sure i get tecnique right. Its hard, to shoot mostly with the wrist , achieving a shot with a slight backspin
tom when i shoot i keep my wrist and hand relaxed but the ball keeps going off point, i have the feeling that it's veering of the index finger, what do you think?
I've noticed that many shooters who shoot well employ the principles of your method, specifically the alignment of the ball, and the release. Kobe Bryant, Hedo Turk, Jordan, Wade, etc. And some people I know.
i dont know about making a swish every time with the same motion...if u put a deffender on that their pritty much useless cuz they have to shoot it over the deffender with a higher arch so they wont get blocked
wouldn't varying just your arm strength be the same as varying your leg strength-the same amount of "variables" , and if you just varied your arm stregth you could still shoot at the top of your jump
The upper body muscles are smaller and more "fast twitch" muscles, I think they call it. Yes, you can shoot with them but it's difficult to repeat the motion, difficult to find the basket with such muscles. It's more effective to make the Release a constant and then vary the arch. Try it both ways and you be the judge. Almost all the great shooters I've seen relaxed the wrist and hand and varied the arch, not the Release.
Only if you are missing. You CAN shoot too high, as it gets harder to judge distance if you're up there to 6', 8', 10' above the rim, plus gravity then starts to accelerate the ball coming down.
i´m using this method only 1 day with it and it´s helping some but it will help me loads, kinda quick to understand this, i only use his q and a´s on the website since i don´t have the dvd
I've actually used this method when shooting 3 pointers and they've been dropping in ever since. This method is reliable and will teach you how to consistently shoot the ball and swish it every time. U might think the method is slow but that's only because you haven't practiced. A lot of people start off slow then they start speeding things up.
BOTH DVDS= GREAT, INCREDIBLE, ONE OF THE MOST INFORMATIVE!!!!!!!
Chris Mullin and a lot of european players shoot like this (floppy wrist), just try to search up basketball highlight videos and if there are videos with slow motion you can see that their wrists flop when shooting.
Good observation, Lee. You're starting to see this stuff, and the more you see, the more you'll be able to learn and groove it. If you find some slow motion shots of Mullin, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, etc., the better players of the past, please send me the URLs to the clips. To me, the relaxed wrist and hand is a key indicator of success. Power from the legs, early and long alignment with the shooting eye, a great Release and varying the arch are the other keys.
i want to see some people in this vid shoot 3s instead of getting super close to the rim pretty easy to shoot up close..at least get near the three point line
Yes, aircar, absolutely! In fact he told me in person that it's what he does. (I met him in 1999 when I coached Dale Davis and again here in Oakland a few years ago.) When asked if this wasn't the way he shot, he said, "Yeah, but I never figured it out like that."
Hey Guys, The other day I ordered this DVD. I got the Swish 1 and Swish 2, VCR/DVD Package, Swish 1 really didn't do much, but Swish 2 is the way to go! I was playing basketball earlier and made every shot. GET this DVD and TRY this method. It really works..Thanks Tom!
i think is a awesome vid.. put can someone answer me something.. like were should my setpoint EXACTLY be.. like were should the ball be in relation to my head? how far up should the ball be.. cuz i think im not pushing any help?
You want the Set Point to be in line with your eye and either below the eyes, looking over the ball (if you're young), or above the eyes when you're strong enough. Play with it. See what works best for you. See the examples in the video.
Cood luck, Tom (Get my videos for the best view of things)
whats the different bewteen a "passive" wrist and a "relaxed" wrist and how should my Dominat hand be setup on the ball? where can i purschase ur videos?
man i love the way there shooting i was a great shooting in my middle school days i wennt 2 played football put on muscle now my shot is heavy and bounces off i cant get my shot back right now could ya write back help me o yea im high school 10th grade and lefty
yeah u just need a "softer shot" and it is easier when u do tricep excersizes and ballhandling excersizes (look them up) i am a lefty too most leftys r better just make sure dont crack ur knuckles alot and try to not use ur wrist alot try going slow at first and then try going faster.
Hey can you tell me how to shoot with just with my middle finger and index finger, so I can have a follow through like the guy in 0:14, because when I try do that I just end up using all my fingers which does not help with my shot.
I advocate shooting with the entire hand, not just a couple fingers. If you relax the wrist and hand, the ball will go wherever you point the hand and extend the arm. Get my videos, especially Swish 2, to really learn how to shoot.
hey tom i know how its done and all i bought ur video but i just want to clarify that the wrist needs to be in a 90 degree angle with the arm i saw some shooters in this video with a 45 degree angle follow thru and it makes the ball hit the back of the rim and go in just wanted to clarify that.
ur arm n the ball should be close to your head.sometimes u dont want ur arm to be right infront of ur head, then u cant c.when u shoot, the ball should come off ur index n
middle finger.(mostly index)also, ur shooting arm should be straight when u r shooting.the ballshould make a high arch toward the net cuz thats wat makes the swish.
not too high though.if u want more tips,go to Basketball Shooting 1 (The Setup) just tryin to help ya
Watch how they shoot. Watch to see the hands bouncing. It means they're not flipping or snapping their Releases. Note that they shoot early in the jump. It's an easy way to shoot, but it's also how the great shooters have always shot.
hey, i need help with basketball stuff. i usually play shooting guard or small forward. occasionally i play point guard. i'm in 8th grade and still sort of short... only 5"2 ryt now. the coach says i'm not strong enough to shoot three pointers right now. so during games i'd have to find a way to get in close enough so my shot goes in...and sumtimes my shot just goes way off. i'm a okay shooter. my coach said i hav a pretty good throw. is there anyway i can get a higher accuracy?
i had a breakthrough with toms video my push was more of a flip i think so i just put my elbow at approxmentily 90 degree's and my shot is so much higher and consistent.. i suggest that tip my shot has imporved
Just shoot quicker in the jump and, of course, increase the strength of the jump. If you shoot right away, the ball will go as high as the distance allows. I call that catching 100% of the "UpForce."
Higher is generally better, but make it appropriate.
Get my Swish videos to really "get" how to shoot, how to practice, how to learn.
or u wont be consistant or acurate especially because the hoop is most ofter further away than high also the shortest distance between two points is a straight line so the more arch the further a shot ur actually shooting i agree the minimum arch is 45 degrees am i right
i need your help. i'm a shooter and i've studied shooting since about eighth ive worked with Rick Mount I've read essays by Ed Palubinskas seen videos by Dave Hopla, studied Pros and what ive seen is in order to shoot the ball straight and consistantly it is good to have decent amount of forward motion in ur release
I have the answer. You have to take more responsibility for what's happening! No one else can tell you what you're doing incorrectly without seeing you (and knowing shooting). If you do something that doesn't work, figure it out. Increase awareness of what's actually happening, then try different "fixes" and you'll solve the questions.
Send me a video clip of you shooting from different angles, I'll be able to see it and help you out. Make a video and convert it to a DVD and send that.

hey tom i know how its done and all i bought ur video but i just want to clarify that the wrist needs to be in a 90 degree angle with the arm i saw some shooters in this video with a 45 degree angle follow thru and it makes the ball hit the back of the rim and go in just wanted to clarify that.

ur arm n the ball should be close to your head.sometimes u dont want ur arm to be right infront of ur head, then u cant c.when u shoot, the ball should come off ur index n
middle finger.(mostly index)also, ur shooting arm should be straight when u r shooting.the ballshould make a high arch toward the net cuz thats wat makes the swish.
not too high though.if u want more tips,go to Basketball Shooting 1 (The Setup) just tryin to help ya

How do they manage to swish all those shots like that? That's just amazing how they do it.

Watch how they shoot. Watch to see the hands bouncing. It means they're not flipping or snapping their Releases. Note that they shoot early in the jump. It's an easy way to shoot, but it's also how the great shooters have always shot.

hey, i need help with basketball stuff. i usually play shooting guard or small forward. occasionally i play point guard. i'm in 8th grade and still sort of short... only 5"2 ryt now. the coach says i'm not strong enough to shoot three pointers right now. so during games i'd have to find a way to get in close enough so my shot goes in...and sumtimes my shot just goes way off. i'm a okay shooter. my coach said i hav a pretty good throw. is there anyway i can get a higher accuracy?

i had a breakthrough with toms video my push was more of a flip i think so i just put my elbow at approxmentily 90 degree's and my shot is so much higher and consistent.. i suggest that tip my shot has imporved
thanks tom for this and my "self discovery"

what ways are the to create a higher arc?
t1lui 4 years ago
