I grew up in Pomona in the '50s. This video brings back memories, the orange groves, Mt. Baldy, Puddingstone, the Christmas parade, Pomona was a nice little town. I was a champ at shooting marbles in the dirt lots.
this is a kick ass upload it shows chicanos and the community and the oppresion that was going on around them in the 50s a time when this kind of movie would be dangerous to make .
well now days there are gangs in every city now, no matter if its rich, there are gangs in san dimas, west covina, claremont, walnut and even diamond bar but the wierd and kinda funny thing is, is that where the gangs are, its in the low income part of that city while the rest of it is rich, weird huh? why doesnt the mayor clean up that part of the city to make it as clean as the ghetto part? no one will ever know.
what a fake fight ahahahahha but any ways.you know who helped white settlers fight santa anna at the alamo,Mexicans,no one person liked santa anna even other parts of Mexico went against santa anna just like texas, and he ended up screwing Mexico by giving the west for his life, thoes Mexicans after helping the anglos, where soon forgoten and hated, alot where stripped of their land, and also alot of them where deported to Mexico just for speacking spanish, even thoe they where from the west.
that is why there was alot of Mexicans that hated whites,,,cuz whites played them wrong since the begining,,,lock for this name jose chavez y chavez...he was in billy the kids group...latre joined LAS GORRAS BLANCAS,,witch was a group that wanted to reclaim the land taken by anglo farmers,so who is realy to blame that the west is fucked,,,anglos that fucked the Mexicans over or the Mexicans them selfs,,,,
This here is about the Sharkeys a Mexican gang that became 12th street Pomona and a now defunct white Okie gang. In 1930 there were less than 2 million Mexicans in the entire country. During the Great Depression Okies migrated in great numbers to Southern California to work the fields. In 1942 the Bracero Act legitimized the importation of Mexican labor enmasse to work the fields the whites were leaving to fight the war. That's the backdrop for this conflict.
i worked in p12 hood for a year..they dont like blaccs but they wont shoot u cause u blk they dont like the blk gang that was in south pomona i heard they ran them out there hood the ss village crips lol hear dthe mmexicans got them niggers gone after a min cuh
oh yea the los angeles gangs chicano "hispanic" gangs dont get along for shit with the black gangs. I remember southsider village crip in pomona back in the 90s, they still around? doesnt p12 run pomona like flores runs el monte.
and its a few south side crips alot of hem went down in a drug bust in 08 about 10, they started bein lowkey in the osuth pomona cause 12s was to much for a war to continue
I grew up in Pomona in the 50's and this film was made to frighten the school kids enough to stop gang violence. All school kids watched it. At the time it was scary for all of us to watch. Where I went to school (50% Mexican, 40% white and 10% Black) we were all friends. We were told that a kid had been killed in a gang fight in a park and these were the gang members. We were also told that the Pomona Dragstrip was built to get the gang car racing off the streets and to the drag strip.
Id love to hear something from these people in their own words. Someone should trace as many of the 40's 50's and 60's gang members down as possible and interview them, It would make an awesome book.
Anybody heard of the Spook Hunters? They sound like bad dudes but there's barely anything written about them.
Now the white gang portrayed in this short file was an oakie gang (their parents were dust bowl migrants) and, of course, they eventually grew up got married and dropped the gang life for an American one. The Mexican gang here, of course, did not and today are the 12 street Pomona gang recently in the papers when a wannabe killed a cop in front of the court house to impress some of the gang members. They didn't move on with life but because an institutionalized generational criminal gang.
completely wrong. true im sure many of the white kids moved on. and so did alot of these mexicans. but the reason mexican gangs still thrive there is because of all of the immigrants coming in from mexico and settling down and having families. so the end result was this became a dominantly mexican neighborhood, and thats why theyre still around.and also im sure there is alot of white people that never moved on and stayed stuck in that hood.
Now that we're civil again I will point out that WWI is outside the scope of this discussion. However, WWI was an important event that directly set the stage for WWII and indirectly the environment beyond WWII.
Furthermore snotnose, the advent of Spanish weapons and tactics enabled the Spanish-Mexican effort to finally wrest away the southernly portion of what now is the USA from the Indian tribes there. And when they did, the Spanish-Mexican invasion resulted in great death (the death toll reaches 70% of all native americans just in the state of California which today is the state with the greatest number of Native Americans in the nation) with most of the survivors being enslaved.
The reason there were so few Mexicans here even after they overcame the Native Americans whom had been their historical enemies was due to the Spanish custom (inherited from when the Umayyad ruled Spain [Read about the Muslim invasion and their subsequent loss of southern Europe]) of granting large tracts of land to mostly absent landowners. And Mexico mismanaged things so badly under that system that many of the few Mexicans here during that time actually left before California became a state.
its always interesting to watch old gang documentys and see hows things used to be and compare it too nowdays, and its even better to see many others with the same interest, we are not alone in this crazy world, we are gang boys
The white gang portrayed in this short file was an oakie gang (their parents were dust bowl migrants) and, of course, they eventually grew up got married and dropped the gang life for an American one. The Mexican gang here, of course, did not and today are the 12 street Pomona gang recently in the papers when a wannabe killed a cop in front of the court house to impress some of the gang members. Yeah. They show this movie to you when you first get to the Pen. It sure is a good thing that the famous Officer Bird had the insight to have a talk with the founders of La M & the Aryan Brotherhood way back then so that now all the Southsiders and the Woods can now play pattycake in the joint. Haven't you ever heard of the Nazi Lowriders? ROTFL, duh dude.
your dumb.. latinos have been here since the early 1900s. after all the south western parts of the US did used to be Mexico. cubans and puerto ricans have always been coming too since early 1900s. ever seen i love lucy? that was a long time ago, ricky ricardo? latinos have always been here.
The US census Telecine (Google: Mexicans Deserve Our Country More Than We Do?) shows that Latinos were only 1.15% of the entire US population in 1930. It wasn't until the Bracero Act of 1942 that they began to be imported in great numbers.
Snotnosed KidNova, in 1848 the non-native population of California is estimated to have been no more than 15,000. It should be obvious there were not a lot of Mexicans here by anyone's standards before the Southwest became a US territory nor afterwards for many years. In fact, in 1930 the US Census shows the total number of Mexicans in the USA in 1930 were 1,422,533 out of a population of 122,775,046 making the percentage of Mexicans here 1.16% of the total US population. Now go do your homework
Of course the Oaky white gang all moved on to become productive citizens and died out shortly after this movie but the Mexican gang the Sharkey's kept the gang going right up until today. In fact, they are now the Pomona 12th street gang in the news recently for the slaying of a police officer. Typical end. White gang goes straight and grows up but Mexicans keep it going generation after generation dealing drugs, violence for hire, robbing, doing Eme's bidding. Welcome to the truth.
The visuals are dated, but the issues are the same today. Boys raising themselves, without the benefit of real leaders. When boys raise themselves we will of course get the Lord of the Flies.

Man this was a trip! Thanks for posting, I never thought there were any Anglo gangs ever in Pomona! I live in Pomona now and there is still alot of gang activity unfortunately... But its mostly Hispanic and some Black gang memebers now.
oquitzin1979, strange, but that was my same reaction. I almost did not watch it -- but the film turns out to be very good with an excellent message. Thank you for your comments and for the rating.
This movie was produced around 1952, but actually gangs back then are,nt much different from gangs of today. They are angry
mis-guided youth,s caught up in drugs and crime. What they are really crying out for is love and attention` when people feel unloved and rejected it often brings out hostility and rebellion. This film points all this out):
and shows how working together can build hope and good will. Thankyou
in the late 40,s early 50,s,,,the white gang out of south gate,,called the spook hunters, would go into south central los angeles and intimidate negroes,,,their black jackets had ghost heads with a hanging nooses,,,with changing demographics the spook hunters faded from the scene
my uncle told me about this movie his an old skool sharkie or raiders or a bandeit old skoll his my grand uncle his about 60 years old maybe a litle older but he told to watch this he came out on it
Remember that WHITE PEOPLE brought gang culture to this continent from Europe (e.g "The Gangs of New York", the KKK, etc). Also, this is not about "Latinos", this is about MEXICANS. This has nothing to do with speaking the Latin language or being a Roman or writing in Latin letters. Mexicans are not Romans or part of the Roman Empire. English itself is 50% Latin.
Let's clearify some things Mr. Mexican Movement. First, SOME White people brought gangs, not all. Just like SOME Mexican or Latino people are gang members. Second, most, if not all, of the Latinos used in this movie were born here, so that makes them AMERICANS of Mexican, El Salvadorian or Guatemalan decent...etc. Just because they are Latinos, don't label them as Mexicans. Some may take great offense to that. Especially if they have nothing to do with the Mexican race. Fijate!
Some interesting trivia about this film: Filmed on location in Pomona, California from Aug. 1954 to Feb. 1955. Originally filmed with no audio...Sid had to go back and dub the real voices in, except Danny's because Sid didn't think he sounded ethnical enough. All the names of the characters are the actor's real names, except Curly's name was changed to Danny. (contn'd)
(contn'd) In the last fight scene, the guys used their real cars, but didn't want any damage done to them, so they got an old blue '37 Ford coupe from a local junk yard (seen in the movie) and beat up on that. Two of the boys who acted in the movie never saw it until 50 years later. The Anglo boys and the Latino boys were actually friends.
Glad to see it's been put back up on Youtube. I had the honor of meeting the director, Sid Davis, and the surviving people who acted in this short film for the 50th reunion of the film two years ago. Many still live here in Pomona where the flim was made. Sid passed last year, unfortunately.
MrMemories, thank you very much for your comments. I am sad to hear that Sid passed away, but he left behind a great many valuable films that will help the next generation.

It's the "white flight," man. People don't tend to "clic up" in the 'burbs.

Thank you for your comments and for the rating.

for all i know hispanics gangs have been out since 1920's
cheeto4X 3 years ago
This movie was produced around 1952, but actually gangs back then are,nt much different from gangs of today. They are angry
mis-guided youth,s caught up in drugs and crime. What they are really crying out for is love and attention` when people feel unloved and rejected it often brings out hostility and rebellion. This film points all this out):
and shows how working together can build hope and good will. Thankyou

True the first gangs were white.

so the english people arent roman
pheonixheroes 3 years ago
Let's clearify some things Mr. Mexican Movement. First, SOME White people brought gangs, not all. Just like SOME Mexican or Latino people are gang members. Second, most, if not all, of the Latinos used in this movie were born here, so that makes them AMERICANS of Mexican, El Salvadorian or Guatemalan decent...etc. Just because they are Latinos, don't label them as Mexicans. Some may take great offense to that. Especially if they have nothing to do with the Mexican race. Fijate!

Nationalities, immigration topics, and personal frustrations are topics beside the movie or the gang problem in USA.
Defaming Mexico is politically incorrect
Mexico is a Nation within the USA.
If you are against Mexico then you are against America.

Wow what makes you say that?

its so close to the US that they would have to react for their own safety if we got attacked

End illegal immigration. Reject Ted Kennedy's bill that lifted the quotas on legal immigration back in 1965 and let's get those levels back.

Mr. Memories...how close was this filmed to the Ellsworth horse farm?
oldmexican 4 years ago
Some interesting trivia about this film: Filmed on location in Pomona, California from Aug. 1954 to Feb. 1955. Originally filmed with no audio...Sid had to go back and dub the real voices in, except Danny's because Sid didn't think he sounded ethnical enough. All the names of the characters are the actor's real names, except Curly's name was changed to Danny. (contn'd)
MrMemories 4 years ago
