Damn, it prob took 100 tries before they found these suckers, they got em so bad. They actually said no problem to soiled toilet paper!
Just think about what that means, your sitting on the toilet & everytime u wipe your ass u actually go out of ur way not to flush it down the toilet but u save it in something & carry down to the bin
And since when did wet food ever have any recyclable properties
baaa.. baaa. baaaa..SHEEP. I'd love to see them come to NY and try that. We have one blue bin here and we chuck it all in there. The garbage men don't want to dick around with a bazillion bins either. If they laid out 9 bins and dumped a bag of crap on the ground in front of me, I would have scooped it all up and shoved it into one bin and said "there...done.. lets go do something constructive now".
America's recycling isn't even that strict compared to other countries such as Japan.. If anything it should be more strict. You go up to people with a camera crew of course they will do that!
The guy in the dark shirt, "doesn't sound too bad, doesn't sound too bad, doesn't sound too bad.....", ya could've asked him to hold his hand over a blow torch to prevent him having to recycle...well, anything !....he'd be happy to fall for it !!!
in the show the people were told that they were thinking of giving people that many bins for their waste & the people would be responsible for sorting everything out in all those bins. So, they let them try it out to see what their response was & if they didn't mind doing this as another regular chore to add to their day.
would you want to do this every day? very time consuming. I think 3 bins as we have now, is enough.
It's just like a silly "test" to see how far people will go.
Probably I have to see the whole show because the 'taken advantage of' is missing here. Besides, they were doing it on camera. I think everyone knows how people are 'keen' on that sort of thing in reality. The trash gets mixed up unless there are some incentive/punishment involved.
It's not bullshit. Of course this is a setup, but as someone who has worked in a recycling plant for 3 years, 90% of stuff you recycle goes straight into landfill. As they say, the only thing actually WORTH recycling is Paper and Aluminium (Bauxite). Sucks for the environment... but trust me, the recycling companies are making millions.

I LOLd at your comment because its spot-on. Normally they'd find some schmuck who wouldnt separate garbage w/ 2 cans, but this was just embarrassing. Its like going up to a gynecologist and saying 'would you treat a fat woman?' and the dr says yes, and you go 'but what if she was REALLY fat?' 'of course!' 'even if she were ugly!?'

In fact, I would be surprised if P&T didn't have to try many houses before they managed to get the effect they wanted.
Did you mean to say you like P&T as long as they aren't making a pathetic attempt smear something you believe in?
It's what they do in every episode of Bullshit - smear something that a lot people strongly believe in (recycling, the Bible, gun control, PETA, etc). I haven't seen an episode where they don't make someone who disagrees with them look foolish. To me, that's what makes the show entertaining, even when I disagree with their views.
well i think what annoys me about this clip is that they're not making fun of recycling (something which I do believe in, you're right) but they're more making fun of peoples' willingness to make sacrifices in order to do the right thing.
As I said, give me an ignorant person who wants to do the right thing over an idiot who's ignorant and proud of it.
They're not making fun of them and they admit that not everyone was willing, but they just went to show that people are willing to do outrageous things if you tell them it's the right thing to do, and will seldom, if ever, ask "why?" and "how?" And they even commend them for that willingness, but they're very important questions. It's easy for that enthusiasm to be exploited for less than noble goals. Some of the foulest ideologies are fought by people that earnestly believe them to be just
The thing is they prove that recycling is not beneficial they are making fun of people that Believe they are doing the right thing, but really they aren't doing the right thing so that's what they are trying to show. That people spend allot of time on Recycling when there is no benefit people are wasting their time.
I guess all that there is left is certain types of metal recycling and composting - since the stuff just mulches. Although recycling won't end anytime soon, unless commodity prices for the stuff keeps on dropping.
It is a JOKE! Of course recycling isn't that hard, but is it that necessary? The point of this Bullshit! experiment is to see how far people will go to do something that doesn't need doing. Duh.
Yeah. I got the satire. That's what p n t do. But they were using it to make a point, 1 I don't fully agree with. Did you really type "duh"? What are you? 6?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
why would you need the other barrels, though? isn't colored paper recycled the same way uncolored paper is, wet foods the same way dry foods are, and so on? you wouldn't need any extra containers.
Um, who is recycling food?? Again, you are missing the point. It is a JOKE using hyperbole. Did you miss that these people were recycling "lightly used" toilet paper and sanitary products??? Again, duh.
Bullshit is right. This is completely fucking stupid. I like most of what penn and teller do but what the hell is wrong with recycling? So these people want to be responsible about what they throw away... oh god, they're wasting so much precious time and money! Let's just fill the landfills even more than we already do! It'll work itself out I'm sure.
yeah this was funny, but I'm still going to recycle... just not planning on recycling, dead chicken carcases and used syringes etc... not like I do heroine or anything... just saying.
ooploon- exactly. this is a dumb segment, beause we don't recycle carcasses, or partially soiled tp. These are good people, whom P&T are trying to make look bad. They failed!
I am trying to understand the point of this video. No one suggests that recycling require going through what they are presenting here.
Penn & Teller's Neo-Con corporate-funded Cato Institute has spent decades and hundreds of millions discrediting and ridiculing the environmental movement, so that coporations might dump toxic waste without financial consequence. They apparently think birth defects and cancer happening to other people is of no concern to them.
What...in the FUCK are they trying to prove here?! Because these 2 people act like jackasses, THAT makes recycling too time-consuming and redundant?! Yeah, separating paper, plastic, and metals can be SO CONFUSING, Penn! I guess Penn believes that if he screams "FUCK!" over and over, he'll eventually squeeze out a valid point from his ass. Idiot. P&T are obviously just trying to be controversial in this episode or they're just running out of ideas; recycling is not a bad thing, deal with it.
he's seriously just trying to be an asshole. just because he can't spend five more fucking seconds of his life to put shit in a different can doesn't mean he has a valid point.
what if all the mercury Ive been dumping into my local lake is actually good for the fish...has you stoped to think of that? We give our children iron in there multivitamins so I am giving the young fish mercury..since mercury is heavier then iron is is undoubtably better for them....!
" straw-man argument. " hit the nail on the head! Pen and Teller set up Extreme cases painting the debate black or white. Ultimately , how does this video help reduce refuse?
The point being made is that tradeoffs exists. Recycling can't be only thought about in terms of the resources saved (paper, plastics, metals, etc.)--one must also consider the costs involved (time, effort, inconvenience) in pursuing such an ideal. Time is as much a resource as are raw materials.
to 161803-You speak of time, effort and inconvenience because these guys created caroonish obstacles specifically for this segment. They are *not real*-the only "inconvenience" I could conceive of is to prewash your recycables, but that is not an inconvenience for me. Sorting between glass, plastic, paper and aluminum is second nature when you're used to it.
I would not contend that the costs in time and effort are low; my point is that they are not zero. For very marginal materials such as glass and plastic, recycling barely makes sense even if one considers the effort undertaken by individual recycling households to be nil. For other items such as aluminum and copper, however, recycling a clear win.
You people should learn more economics and then maybe you would be able to grasp the nuanced point being sloppily, obnoxiously made by P&T.
Those extra bins were kinda unnecessary,I see the point in which certain people would go a certain length to recycle, but I think common sense would tell you that they can't be recycled through regular means and they would be considered "Trash". Except for the colored paper of course.
I toss all my waste oil batteries plastics and random chemicals over a bridge by a local park, church or apartment dumpsters or just throw it out the window of a moving truck. I figure it all came from the earth let it go back to the earth!
I like to feed trolls into my chipper vac and distribute them into a local creek where they undoubtedly end up in the drinking supply of millions...Is this wrong?
Though not always possible, the best way is to get rid of as much garbage as you can yourself. I live in the woods and I separate out newspapers, magazines, tin cans, and glasses directly for recycling. Anything burnable (paper, most food wrappers...) we put in the trash can and burn once every two weeks. Garbage (apple cores, potato rinds...) is put in a bucket and later dumped in the woods, where it will quickly be eaten or decomposed. Grass clippings and leaves are put into compost piles.
am I to understand you correctly when you say you burn plastic (food wrappers)? Plastics are made from petrochemicals which release dioxin when burned.Dioxin is a well documented human carcinogen (cancer-causing agent).
When you burn plastic, it gets reduced to ash(particulate), becomes diffused in the air, and eventually settles on everything in the landscape.this practice pollutes the water table and any plants in the area(normally I'd be for it, but in this case,I hope you don't grow your own food).anyway, I'm really looking to help you out a little further with your otherwise comprehensive strategy for dealing with your waste,so I hope this helps. :)
The amount of space required for landfills isn't so much of an issue as I see it (though it's still crap pollution). It's the resources wasted.
Think about how much energy and effort goes into mining the raw materials, such as metals ores or oil, the extraction processes that refine it into useful metals and plastics, and the manufacturing of bottles and tins etc. Then we use it once and throw it away. JFC!
Plastic doesn't decompose. In addition to this, the resources required to make the product are not infinite. Recycling helps to preserve those finite resources.
And while bottles do make a good percentage of our overall waste 'pie chart', if you will, paper is a much larger part of the problem. Look around online for the statistics - it's pretty shocking justh ow much paper is just thrown away.
haha.... "Stop the poor Indian guy from crying..." Reference to Iron Eyes Cody, who wasn't even a native American Indian. He was Italian! Not a drop of native American blood. I'm surprised P&T didn't mention THAT.
Just because more energy is used doesn't necessarily mean it's a moot process, especially when we're dealing with the alternative of just leaving all this stuff somewhere. Recycling has also gotten more efficient over time, and I imagine it will soon be just as efficient or more efficient as it is to make it.
I'd much rather be recycling millions of bottles a day than throwing millions of bottles a day into landfills until we HAVE to recycle them for the room.
The only thing Pen and Teller proved is how much people care about how they are perceived. They were obviously BSing in front of the camera to seem enviromentally concious. But trying to discredit recycling by socially testing a hyperbole of it in a testing pool that consists of two people is really weak minded imo.
Exactly; food is biodegradable. That's exactly why its seperated, instead of mixing it with recycle plastics etc., instead of mixing it into a useless mess that has to be buried for a century.
So this test was to prove that people that recycle are bullshit?? hmmmmm test failed miserably...perhaps if this lard-ass turned magician actually snuck his head out of the refridgerator from time to time he could do a little recycling of his own...i won't hold my breath for that. Non recyclers = pigs of planet earth. oink oink
Well I'm thinking that was his point, ppl that recycle will only recycle to a certain point which means they're 'bullshit', perhaps people who care for dogs are bullshit too because they don't go to the pound and adopt every dog available?? Perhaps these 'bullshit' tests prove that penn n teller should have stuck to magic and left the socio-political diatribes to people with brain cells...YES
I get where you are coming from, but they do make a point, which they admit isn't scientific. All they try to do is poke holes in the more blatant hypocrisies.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm not sure u do get where I'm coming from because if u truly did, u would realize their wasn't a "point" to this test of theirs !! these guys are just 2 fucking morons that should have stuck to cheap parlour tricks for drunken tourists...
i dont think they were saying that recycling is bullshit. i think they were testing to see how much "bullshit" people would agree to participate in b4 finally saying enough, this is ridiculous.
it would be ridiculous to expect everyone to sort thing that much.
1.they pay the people at the recycle center good money to do it.
No, I've seen this episode. They claim that it costs more money and more energy usage to recycle plastics than to make it from new materials and that our landfills are not running out of room. All this without providing any proof or facts whatsoever. Total waste of time watching that episode.

From the bbc news website today.
Newcastle-Under-Lyme Council have introduced one of the most complicated systems of household waste recycling so far in the UK.
Households now have to separate their waste into nine different bins and bags.
The Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition who run the council are hoping to boost recycling rates to 50 percent by 2015.

I do like Japan's trash system. There are 6 bins.
one for non-recyclable - actually doesn't get used that often
burnable- i think you can figure out what goes there
recyclable- where most of your trash goes, they recycle everything
cans and bottles- metal cans and glass bottles
paper cartons- those paper cartons for a quart of milk, and it is not picked up by the city you have to drop it off yourself at a grocery store
and finally plastic bottles- for some odd reason they get there own bin

well i think what annoys me about this clip is that they're not making fun of recycling (something which I do believe in, you're right) but they're more making fun of peoples' willingness to make sacrifices in order to do the right thing.
As I said, give me an ignorant person who wants to do the right thing over an idiot who's ignorant and proud of it.
theREALshafan 3 years ago 3
They're not making fun of them and they admit that not everyone was willing, but they just went to show that people are willing to do outrageous things if you tell them it's the right thing to do, and will seldom, if ever, ask "why?" and "how?" And they even commend them for that willingness, but they're very important questions. It's easy for that enthusiasm to be exploited for less than noble goals. Some of the foulest ideologies are fought by people that earnestly believe them to be just
TheHobophobic 2 years ago 2
The thing is they prove that recycling is not beneficial they are making fun of people that Believe they are doing the right thing, but really they aren't doing the right thing so that's what they are trying to show. That people spend allot of time on Recycling when there is no benefit people are wasting their time.

This is a straw-man argument. Recycling has never been about "energy saving", it's about waste reduction and the reuse of natural resources.
Recycling is about natural ressources.
Recycling isn't efficient eh? Recycling is more expensive than mining eh?
What happens when Mother Earth has no more raw materials to harvest and we have to go BACK through our landfills to gather recyclable material?
benisontenet 4 years ago 3
" straw-man argument. " hit the nail on the head! Pen and Teller set up Extreme cases painting the debate black or white. Ultimately , how does this video help reduce refuse?
jojo808 4 years ago 4
The point being made is that tradeoffs exists. Recycling can't be only thought about in terms of the resources saved (paper, plastics, metals, etc.)--one must also consider the costs involved (time, effort, inconvenience) in pursuing such an ideal. Time is as much a resource as are raw materials.
161803 3 years ago 2
Good point number guys with no sense of identity. But remember, even when you and everyone else is dead time still continues.
monkeyofdarknessx 3 years ago
No identity? Ha! I am the golden ratio, you ape.
Anyway, the point is that every individual's time is finite, even if time itself proves to be infinite.
161803 3 years ago
Don't inconvenience yourself!! Let the planet rot!!
SleepySkeptic 3 years ago
to 161803-You speak of time, effort and inconvenience because these guys created caroonish obstacles specifically for this segment. They are *not real*-the only "inconvenience" I could conceive of is to prewash your recycables, but that is not an inconvenience for me. Sorting between glass, plastic, paper and aluminum is second nature when you're used to it.
Naderraider79 3 years ago
I would not contend that the costs in time and effort are low; my point is that they are not zero. For very marginal materials such as glass and plastic, recycling barely makes sense even if one considers the effort undertaken by individual recycling households to be nil. For other items such as aluminum and copper, however, recycling a clear win.
You people should learn more economics and then maybe you would be able to grasp the nuanced point being sloppily, obnoxiously made by P&T.
161803 3 years ago 2

Those extra bins were kinda unnecessary,I see the point in which certain people would go a certain length to recycle, but I think common sense would tell you that they can't be recycled through regular means and they would be considered "Trash". Except for the colored paper of course.

compost paper and food. and grow food.
josephdupont 4 years ago 2
Though not always possible, the best way is to get rid of as much garbage as you can yourself. I live in the woods and I separate out newspapers, magazines, tin cans, and glasses directly for recycling. Anything burnable (paper, most food wrappers...) we put in the trash can and burn once every two weeks. Garbage (apple cores, potato rinds...) is put in a bucket and later dumped in the woods, where it will quickly be eaten or decomposed. Grass clippings and leaves are put into compost piles.
admiralcapn 4 years ago 2
Part 1
am I to understand you correctly when you say you burn plastic (food wrappers)? Plastics are made from petrochemicals which release dioxin when burned.Dioxin is a well documented human carcinogen (cancer-causing agent).
westcoastfossil 4 years ago 2
Part 2
When you burn plastic, it gets reduced to ash(particulate), becomes diffused in the air, and eventually settles on everything in the landscape.this practice pollutes the water table and any plants in the area(normally I'd be for it, but in this case,I hope you don't grow your own food).anyway, I'm really looking to help you out a little further with your otherwise comprehensive strategy for dealing with your waste,so I hope this helps. :)

DylanGaine 4 years ago
The amount of space required for landfills isn't so much of an issue as I see it (though it's still crap pollution). It's the resources wasted.
Think about how much energy and effort goes into mining the raw materials, such as metals ores or oil, the extraction processes that refine it into useful metals and plastics, and the manufacturing of bottles and tins etc. Then we use it once and throw it away. JFC!
One day we'll be mining landfills.
BulletMagnetOWI 4 years ago 2
Plastic doesn't decompose. In addition to this, the resources required to make the product are not infinite. Recycling helps to preserve those finite resources.
And while bottles do make a good percentage of our overall waste 'pie chart', if you will, paper is a much larger part of the problem. Look around online for the statistics - it's pretty shocking justh ow much paper is just thrown away.
Xbot1 4 years ago
What is wrong with dividing stuff in just a few containers? These guys want to exagerate, there is no deeper meaning in their practical jokes.
Most people would go allong with it only to be polite, doesnt mean they wouldnt get pissed after a few days of throwing stuff in 10 containers.

muskypuckers 4 years ago
Just because more energy is used doesn't necessarily mean it's a moot process, especially when we're dealing with the alternative of just leaving all this stuff somewhere. Recycling has also gotten more efficient over time, and I imagine it will soon be just as efficient or more efficient as it is to make it.
I'd much rather be recycling millions of bottles a day than throwing millions of bottles a day into landfills until we HAVE to recycle them for the room.
Xbot1 4 years ago 2
The only thing Pen and Teller proved is how much people care about how they are perceived. They were obviously BSing in front of the camera to seem enviromentally concious. But trying to discredit recycling by socially testing a hyperbole of it in a testing pool that consists of two people is really weak minded imo.
