Why can't men & women compete against each other in chess?

After all chess is a mind game, not like athletics where it would be unfair to allow men to compete against women due to the man's physical advantage.

they can and they do. but if you mean profesionally, its because chess demands a lot of physical effort to mantain concentration and men wouldhave and advantage. Although Alexandra can beat 99.999999999% of men in this planet in casual or tournament play. She is the best!!

Why would men have an advantage in keeping concentration?

Because concentration for long periods of time causes fatigue. And men can sustain more fatigue for longer periods of time than women, in most cases. It's pretty much the same as driving for many hours. Why do we get tired of driving for 5 or 6 or even more hours if we are just sitting on the car holding the steering wheel? Because of the concentration it demands

They can. There is an open game and a women's game. But basically most women play in the women's game because they are too lazy and not committed enough over a long period to get good enough to cut it with the very best in the world. Only a few get good enough to make it into the mens levels and even those are not at the top.

Chess at the top levels is very boring. It demands years of study of opening lines 20 moves or more deep and committing these variations to memory to get a slight edge.

Most top players rely on having prepared opening lines from long years of study even preparing for individual encounters. And much of the tactics they produce is from study of similar tactical plays in other games as well of study of set end game positions and calculating if their tactical line will give them enough advantage in the end game if it lasts that far.

Women on average are not dedicated or single minded enough to hammer away again and again at the same study till it is second nature.
