  • i cry when i here this. so much sadness in our culture!! our young are imitating stuff they see on tv. i am teaching my young ones the way of the pipe. also how to make a good bow and spear. not a fancy for sale one but one that will put food on the table. makes me sad that not much of that is happenin these days. we will one day have to revert to the old days. after all, all great empires (USA) fall.

  • I was told as a child, I had native American heritage. Im sure now, it was from my fathers side. All my life (62 now) i have wanted to fell this was true. Only as of lately have I felt the powerful pull of this tiny drop of my ancestors to my emotions. I can say that I only just see and feel a flash of what is a life for so many of you who are whole.

  • Very beautiful - sooo fine .... I would love to sing this song with my friends & am having trouble matching what I hear with the written lyrics. Would it be possible to add a sonic breakdown of the original chant showing pronunciation & phrasing intervals - as if for a child (like me) to understand ? Big thanks !

  • I like this music!

  • whoever the f*** disliked this is souless. I'm white, but I have nothing but the upmost respect for The American Indians and their cultures. It makes me sick when i hear about what was done to them all those years ago.

  • 'WHATS YOUR NAME'BEAUTIFULL SONG N.Z.

  • This sacred song is sung by Primeaux and Mike! It is so deep on many levels and is very special to my family and people of the Native American Church. The Primeaux family are my cousins. Thank you for playing this song that touches people spiritually all over the world! Wopida Tonka! Mitakuye O'yasin!

  • How come the lyrics don't sound like anything that is said? Is this language transcribed into English that poorly? I.e. is it not phonetic at all?

What about the part in the song that goes, "Way cho nay yay yay, wey cho nay yay, way cho nay cho kon key alone oh mo watch ee yay oh ee.." I have a hard time hearing the sounds at the end of that phrase. Anyone know if they are words? Or just sounds? Around 2:31 there's also "oh shay man a yo" stuff...

  • SHAMAN ROBERTSON HEALS

  • robbie is great! ... discovered with the shine your light and very peaceful and relaxing, takes me right in the past

  • Love it!

  • And the sad reality is the NAC isn't covered by the same 1st Amendment as the rest of us. We can practice our religion however we so chose, but the NAC can't; because peyote is catagorized as a drug. If this is the case, alcohol is also a drug and shouldn't it be banned from communion? After all in all 50 states you must be 21 to drink and wine is served to kids who are taking communion, but we turn a blind eye to that.

FREEDOM OF RELIGION SHOULD BE A BASIC HUMAN RIGHT, NOT A LUXURY.

  • @Me4Macca Good post. What does NAC stand for? Native American community?

  • @gene2u Native American Church

  • @Me4Macca great point!! i couldnt agree more!!

  • @Me4Macca Actually, NAC's use of peyote is protected under the freedom of religion act. You would win in court.

  • native amrica zulu and abrican and moury are the proper people off they country and they more other countrys

  • Love this ..touches me deeply....

  • May we use this song as a closing song and an Honor song at our Drum?

  • @THABHARP

    Fuck yeah, Genarokee!

  • i am half cherokee love this music

  • Peace to all natives and everyone who respects us and our beliefs. We recognize and respect you.

  • Such a beautiful and inspiring song. Lovely lyrics.

  • Everybody please note this song is by Primeaux & Mike! These artists have made lots of recordings together. No one can match their unmistakable harmonies and energy. I don't know why it's credited to Robbie Robertson here - he just added a little twanging electric guitar and included it on one of his own fine albums. But this song - the lyrics and arrangement - are quintessential Primeaux & Mike. Check them out!

  • Miss Wakin Up So Early Before The Sun Rises And Listening To What Makes Life Seem Worth Living And Fighting The Bad Things We Go Thru And Being Thankful Each And Every Day How Strong We Are. I Love Soothing Music Like This. I Am Proud To Be Native American And Honors To The Ones Who Are Staying Strong In Life And Living To The Fullest.

  • One of the best pieces of music ever written.

  • @kkeshom Please note this was written by Primeaux & Mike, not by R. Robertson. Mr. Robertson added some twanging electric guitar and included it on one of his albums, but the song - words and arrangement - are Primeaux & Mike! Look them up - they have a lot of music recorded.

  • @Bizzlefrits is lakȟota

  • never gets old...the natives songs are good saying hi to all the navajo's down south..ye'ah'teeh!

  • Beautiful..........

  • so sad, and Unfair are our history books...they teach us such a biased, incomplete story of what we did to the Indian people...I am an eighth Navajo...I hear no complaints from our Indian ancestors, about the way they were treated...My hope, is that these atrocities will be better known, and thus, never repeated by anyone, To anyone...

  • @TMKchld I am 21 years old now and I was adopted at 5 days old. Since I was young something in my spirit and heart told me I had strong Native American blood in me. Now as I ask my birth father I find several tribes blood in my bloodline. Cherokee being one of them. I hope to learn more, for I strive to learn healing and I have a knowledge of herbal medicine as well as a great love and respect for Mother nature. I just wish I had others around me.

  • I too am a native american, During these hard times in our lands today, we still are learning from our elders pass and present. I pray for our children because they are our future, in their hands will pass the future of the Indian nations. Hear our prayer Great Spirit, and hear the prayers from the Indian Nations.

  • The language is the key to the spirit it says so much without speaking a word. May Creator look over us all and bring the hoop into this generation holding us all

  • Powerfully moving...

  • It is a good day to live.

  • i love this song, its so awesome, " soothing" i first heard on that movie one dead indian

  • unique!

  • I found myself unable to leave my seat at the end of "Thunderheart" years ago. This prayer to the Maker affects me the same way. I am a white, but my heart remembers. Thank you Verdell Primeaux and Jonny Mike. Thank you Robbie Robertson. All who are lead here should also seek out David Morehouse's work. Remote viewer who walks with the spirit of the Bear.

  • I am not even from your continent but....... that music......those words.....they moved me so much. Thank you for your song......I will sing it on another continent. I am humbled and lifted by your song.

  • @heehawluck1 u yrself are quite beautiful. thank u for yr being.

  • @heehawluck1 I am glad that my Native American ancestors songs are uplifting and enchating to those outside of our culture.

  • @JFisherUSMC This is a Native American Church song - a relatively modern part of Native American culture

  • @JFisherUSMC Thanks ....... I still listen to on a regular basis and still find it to be one of the most beautiful things I have heard.

  • @heehawluck1 dude you should try some peyote. I got a lot of extract and I'll send you some if you want to try it.

  • @PipeIncognito I'd do anything to try. Accepting it online seems a little odd though because I thought it was a sacred plant.

  • @xbluemystx8686 The reason I said I would just give it is because its bad luck to buy or sell it. And I want everyone to try it. A trustable source to ask where to get some would be the peyote church of god. Shoot em an email and ask them.

  • Comment removed

  • @xbluemystx8686 You know what I wouldent trust some guy I talk to on the internet either so maybe you could find a native american church that is aware of this bad luck. If you say youll donate some money to them in return for some peyote. Thats not really buying it. But either way if you do just go on to azarius or everyonedoesit and buy it, pray to Jesus for good luck, I'm sure he will understand:) Or I could just send ya some, but it may be hard for me to get it out of Alabama.

  • @PipeIncognito lol...thanks for the thought..but I'm crazy enough my friend. Many thanks though.

  • This song makes me think of my dad. He's gone now, but his memory lives on.

  • @jahstp "Born Jamie Robbie Robertson on July 5, 1943 in Toronto, Canada to an Anglo father and Native American mother from the Mohawk tribe, Robertson was taught to play the guitar by relatives living on the Six Nations Indian Reservation where his mother was raised, outside Toronto."

  • Thank You For teh infromation Greatly Appreciated

  • everytime i listen to this kind of music i cry

  • wonderful what a beautiful voice and sound....It takes me to a sacred place

  • One of Robbie's that i love is the CD Sounds for the Native American. This CD has gotten me through alot in life.

  • Thank you for posting a beautiful video for posting this sacred song, especially for posting it sung in Lakota... Sigh* Saved it immediately to favorites !

  • i love this song. love it!!!!

  • This song is sacred and it shouldn't be used for bad

  • This is a beautiful song. What language is it in? I'm guessing Lakota? :D

  • yes, the translation is a bit off but it is lakota

  • Beautiful every time I hear. I love being First Nation!!!

  • Jesus! I can't even recognize Robbie Robertson the way I can on the Band's albums! This is amazing!

  • thank you , pilunyapelo, i think of these words when i drive by wounded knee every day and a slow anger and hatred builds in my soul when i think of the children dying there.

  • Sometimes to takes many tears to right what has been wrong. Wipe your eyes and stand. Let the hand of the wind caress you as the Elders pass by ... across the sacred ground you now stand on. Bless your life, the gift you are given and, bless yourself. Heal your heart ... let us walk together into a new day.

  • Beautifully said... thank you, and beautiful music.

  • Powerful, beautiful words... surely your spirit shines !!

  • @lakotabob These are very wise and kind words brother. I have only a little native blood in me from a great great grandfather but in my heart and soul I am a big part of him. It is time to repair and to repay for what the whites done. We should start by helping the people on some of the worst reserves to rebuild and give hope to the children.

  • @nightrider836 "repay for what the whites done"... I don't have the words to describe what that made me feel, but it was wrong. What happened was so horrific & so tragic there is no way it can ever be made right. When I really allow myself to think about what the whites have done to not only the NA but the African Americans as well, it makes me ashamed to be part of the whites descendants, even if I have NA & AA blood in my veins.

  • @nightrider836 - (cont.) But even though I AM white, I don't feel I need to "repay" or that I owe anyone for anything other than my feelings of sorrow and guilt seeing as I had nothing to do with what happened to either ethnic group. All I can do is make sure I life my life in a way that is totally opposite of what my ancestors did, and be supportive and understanding and compassionate to my brothers and sisters of both Native American AND the African American.

  • @chrysbarnette26 I agree. The past is the past, and no matter what anyone does, it will always remain the same. The best way to live is not to dwell too much on past deeds, especially if they aren't your fault. Instead, you're right, learn from the mistakes that were made and don't repeat them. Blood doesn't matter, really. I'm of purely European decent, but I live by morals I set for myself, not by what my race has been known to do. It's all anyone can do, really.

  • @lakotabob Thank you............

  • @lakotabob what a beautiful thing to write/say. thank you

  • @lakotabob Wastay Kola may your path be good and strong. Maka Nupa L Cota

  • @lakotabob Beautifully said....I share your sentiments.

  • @lakotabob I'm english, but have always felt an infinity with native americans,When I was 4 I remember watching a hideous country and western movie, and even through my naivity I was always for the native american.May your people find peace, and my ours learn something from it.

  • Thank you for this beautiful healing music. It does my soul good.

  • I find this song unbelievably soothing. Thank you so much for putting it up so I can share it with others. :)

  • Mazaymni, thnx so much for the words, and the translation. I've been drawn to this, since the first time I heard it. I started singing along on just what I heard. Now I know what to sing...and what I am singing. The most beautiful prayer, ever.

  • we believe in love just as every one do,s

  • natives beleived in the creator for ever , we are as jesas was, and will allways be will god , we just had different names for that being and were punished for it.

  • It means natives died for your sins...

  • Beatuful song. The pichure at 3:11 of a crucyfied indian, what does it means?

  • is it possible to give the rest of the lyrics?

  • I found that the paintings at 1:06 and 2:08 ( the first repeated at the end )were done by Father John Guiliani.

  • The singers are Primeaux and Mike.

  • What does the sun behind the man mean??

  • Comment removed

  • The sun behind the indian is a symbol of enlightenment, which means the man has united with the sun whereby the sun sits on the head of man forever.

When this truth is real everyone can see the sun with their own eyes, for there is truly LIGHT EVERYWHERE.

  • Very beautifully explained thank you. I've read this article where this guy is saying that the sun is kinetic and not thermal which means the sun itself is really a dark and cold place but rather a reactor and we have the light here but the sun basically reacts to the earth and therefore we have light and warmth but the true light is within us. Not sure if this is true but its an interesting concept.

  • The true light is within each of us. Dont you know who the true light is?

  • I"m assuming God

  • Thank you very much for this. It reached me when I needed it. Thank you, mezayamni and beautifulwalk for your translations. NagiOlowan, I will be praying for you when I greet the dawn in Labrador when the air is very clear and the land is strong and fresh. I will be praying for you too, nativehealing, that you can quite. • Greetings! I find this song one of the most beautiful I have ever heard...I am Algonquin but my grandson's godfather is of a well known Lakota family and I am deeply tied to that family and their culture. I am currently fighting breast cancer with the help of this family- and I listen to this song every day. I love and respect the lakota language- and would like to get ALL the lyrics and their meaning- even better- also the in the woman's way of speaking-can anyone help?

  • the song starts by asking the creater in the sky (ate wakantaka) to watch over us and then the grand mother to watch over us (unshi) to ahve pity over us becuase we are only human (unsha malya) it tells out reletives we are comming and to guide the way for us.. hope that helps

  • peyotey is the best

  • id love to know

  • These healing songs from native american indians is to me similiar to gregorian chants like that from St Thomas Aquinas Pange lingua and other old catholic chants. They are all very beautiful and have a deep spiritual connection with our creator whatever our religious beliefs are

  • The songs has a way of touching the soul at the deepest intense level. Thank you for your beautiful creativity and sharing your beauty!

  • Long time ago, I read a passage in a book written by a young shaman. She had a vision of the future. When she came back from her vision and told her elder what she had seen. She said that the native nation would rise again, but this time it would be everyone, all races. Not being native american, but a learning shaman none the less, I can't even sing this song! The emotion is so strong I have to stop, but it's beautiful, not painful. From the top to the bottom of my heart, I know she is right.
