I aquired my ccw about a year ago, I carry my weapon most of the time and when I'm able in public places. As do most of my friends and hundreds of others that have aquired ccw permits. Since then I dont feel the need to go around shooting people!! I dont have this attitude that "I got a gun so dont fuck w/ me". If anything, I've been more cautious and little more respectful of others in public.

The UK was also rated by the EU as having the most violent crime in all of Europe, and it wasn't a close finish for first and second. Banning Handguns in the UK did NOTHING to curb gun related crime AT ALL. All that happened was that 40,000+ people lost their jobs and took away firearms from responsible sport shooters.

I aquired my ccw about a year ago, I carry my weapon most of the time and when I'm able in public places. As do most of my friends and hundreds of others that have aquired ccw permits. Since then I dont feel the need to go around shooting people!! I dont have this attitude that "I got a gun so dont fuck w/ me". If anything, I've been more cautious and little more respectful of others in public.

You see it's very hard to make comparisons like that because of the way these studies are conducted in different countries, it's much better to compare different areas of the same country. The UK was also rated by the EU as having the most violent crime in all of Europe, and it wasn't a close finish for first and second. @Slapbass13 Which UK do you live in? After the 1997 handgun ban gun related crime has risen year on year, except for 2004 which saw a tiny decrease, then in 2005 back on the rise. OK we don't have the same self defense laws relating to guns in the UK, but the "ban = less crime" standpoint is utter bullshit.
Banning Handguns in the UK did NOTHING to curb gun related crime AT ALL. All that happened was that 40,000+ people lost their jobs and took away firearms from responsible sport shooters.

@Hirobloodbrother its regarded as an north American trend that the murder rate is dropping since the seventies and the (admitted) ownership rate here is closer to 10 or 15 percent. It is possible the drop is due to gun laws but the drop could also be attributed to different social or other factors.

Thank God we in Canada now have a majority government that is going to eliminate the long gun registry.

Depending on location I could very much be putting others at risk for any mistakes I or you could make, if we both had a gun. The point is, when we carry a gun we make a risk for ourselves and those around us regardless of the sitution.

I'm sorry Cenk, I don't carry a gun for my "jollies", I carry one because I'm in a minority group that is at extremely high risk for hate violence and I'm not capable of defending myself against groups of people who might want to kill me for who I am.
And if someone just "attacked me" there is nothing stopping them from randomly pulling out a knife and killing me, because real life crime is not a boxing match. There is also nothing guaranteeing that someone won't beat me to death with fists.

When it comes right down to it, it doesn't matter what you think about guns, or what laws you think are "just common sense". The right to bear arms is a constitutional right that "shall not be infringed". Or to use a modern day synonym, "shall not be limited" (that's right, look it up). Any laws that limit the right to bear arms are unconstitutional. That's not my opinion, it's constitutional law. And when it comes right down to it, opinions are irrelevant on this matter.

A few dumb fucks are not a good representation of the entire population. The majority of Concealed Carry licence holders are intelligent enough not to do something like this. Was he carrying legally? In Switzerland, when you turn 18 you are given a rifle and have just become part of the army. In Japan, guns are completely outlawed. These are the two countries with the lowest crime rates and in a land based on freedom I say let us keep our guns.

You never indicate whether or not he is carrying the gun leagally. You also quickly dismiss the fact this guy was assaulted. Why is that hard to believe? Was the victim high on drugs? I for one have shot two people (both 18) If I had not been armed, trained and acted at the right time, I would likely be dead right now.
of course I cannot say definitively that I would have died if I had not had a firearm, but that is not a bet I care to take.
In the end I was shot and I shot both the individuals that were committing armed robbery.
