  • How does Jerry get that feedback sound at 3:52?

  • As someone said on another page...someone reserve 8 places in Hell, please......(for the 8 people who disliked this)

  • I don't know if it's the hair and glasses but Layne and Kurt look so much alike here it's insane.

  • Three things:

    1. Jerrycantrells solo was power ,definitely true.

    2. All the filesharing IS ruining the músic industry (the mainstream acts anyways)

    3. I never saw this thats fuckin weird how he was tryin to look like kurt cobain i wonder if that was a joke or what, creepy.

  • I remember watching this of course I got to stay up late since well I was pretty much out of school for Christmas Vacation. LOL!

  • Layne is so sexy playin the guitar!

  • Layne just looks too cool.

  • @LeBigMoneyShow he is fuckin cool man...Imagine if he was around today

  • @SexyAICfan87 Yes indeed. I am glad I saw them back at Lolapoalooza in California in 94. But sorry to say I was not surprised when he died a few years later.

  • @SexyAICfan87 He would be signing the new songs and I would be in his arms. HAHA

  • gawd look at that mosh pit ! now that is moshing! it looks as if the crowd just becomes one giant ball of peoples

  • The crowd is going crazeh!!

  • Thank God it didn't influence their product.

  • I remember this new Years Show Alice in Chains was the last band to perform,I was going crazy in my Living Room as soon as Alice in chains came on.

  • I was a teen during this time, haha suckers! Beiber fuks!

  • you 8 suck my 8

  • Holy shit! This is so fucking AMAZING! Big love for Alice In Chains!

  • It was Party!!!:)

  • layne staley - you are my second favourite metal singer of all time. too bad you're gone. no more potential concerts we could go to with you singing.

  • @youngb1ood Who is the first?

  • Jerry's solo in angry chair = power

  • HEY, i think i'm the 100,00th view!

  • How did you do it, Layne? Fuck.

  • nice hat jerry! i see where kid rock got his look lol. Jerry ur still fucking cool...

  • sound quality sucks

  • what do you expect? it was in 92

  • This was such an awesome era of music. I remember buying Facelift back when I was 13 after seeing Man in the Box for the first time on HeadBanger's Ball. I knew that Alice in Chains' music would be a huge part of my life. Needless to say I'm still a fan. Layne is missed but his spirit will always be there wherever Alice in Chains is playing.

  • sounds like the exact thing I'd post. Man in the box got me started too.

  • Layne Staley you will forever be the baddest mf on the planet! You are sooo missed. Heroine has taken too many bad asses!!!! RIP layne

  • wow...music like this on MTV...hard to see it with what they show now. AIC is the truth

  • @DEPkevinMN lol HOLY SH!T MTV PLAYING MUSIC, THAT IS GOOD NONE THE LESS!?! WHAT?! Oh yeah... I remember.. barely... it's like the 60's lol if you remember you weren't there!.... I remember seeing an AIC debut video right before the dude from Blind Melon died on H... that drugs taken far too many a great musician!

  • @DEPkevinMN

as unbelievable as it may sound, in the 90s good music was mainstream and MTV aired it.

I look around and sometimes It seems like I dreamed it...

  • @espertempo i was there too,bro.......im 44, i feel ya. the very air we breathed was different, words cant do that period justice. fortunately we werent wrong and this shit has strength enough to resonate.gotta go dry my eyes now,

  • Hard to believe it has been so long since they broke in the mainstream...almost 20 years? Some reason I always missed Layne more then any other lost musician...his voice was amazingly powerful!!!

RIP Layne - you touched many souls at the cost of yours.

    FUCK HEROINE!

  • why does it always sound like layne isnt plugged in when he plays guitar live? noticed this in the mad season vids as well

  • They almost always have different guitars turned up at different loudness levels, and if a lead singer doesn't play guitar very often, they're not going to turn him up as loud as the other guys because he is more likely to screw up and he's not carrying the rhythm of the song as much.

  • Even in the album version, the riff that Layne is playing isn't turned up as loud as the other one.

  • RNRDOLL you are my hero.

  • Please, speak about how good is layne. Don´t post anything else

  • You might want to take those rose-eyed shades off kid...you got a long fuckin way to go.

  • Obvious discomfort with a guitar has never looked so cool... <3__<3

  • o well if ur ever in california hit me up

    what u play?

  • where u at?

    ...17 and in a band

  • @bustyourchop haha. same. not even kidding. i play bass, and sing backing vox. im also a songwriter along with the lead guitar player.

  • fuck laynes playing a guitar

  • I love Alice in chains 4ever rock onnnn!!!!!

  • a new generation of musicians with heart and passion will rise, just like 20 years ago!

you see kids these days, they're playing 90's stuff more than 00's music, it's simple: they're drawn to real music instead of gimmicks, we're 'bout to hit 1990 again.

  • MTV can burn for all I care..

  • haha Layne playiing guitar. Cute!

  • haha, layne had TERRIBLE guitar technique. this song is the shit, and so was he. he just was not a guitarist. he sounded damn good here too.

  • i love that voice

    m

  • I hate the MRV nowadays. The MTV in those days (90's) was so much better.

  • BURN MTV

  • the good old days.. mtv was actually music tv, music was music, and alice in chains was alice in chains.

  • LOVE seeing Layne pick up the guitar

  • Maaan i would give everything to listen to that in the new years eve!

  • same dude, that would be an intense party

  • RIP LAyne

  • now its model television. and rich bitches cryin

  • although, the music MTV would probably play now may make me lose my lunch

  • what the hell happened to MUSIC TV, a.k.a. MTV?!

  • They figured out that they could commercialize music, and then after they commercialized music, they decided to commercialize reality.

Go figure, I really used to like MTV too..

  • The formula for commercializing music has been decided since the 50s...its nothing new at all. The only difference is that because of the advent of mp3 and file sharing the industry no longer has the money they used to to have decent artist development anymore. So now what you're stuck with is all the bubblegum acts; the big labels can only safely afford to push that shit because they know its going to sell. A bitter pill, but blame 11 years of illegal downloading and lack of CD sales.

  • are you seriously trying to tell us that the reason music sucks today is because people download illegal copies of songs? good music is good music and will reach the ears of the people regardless. just look at the band Sublime. Started out on a small indi lable, got popular in their own part of the country, and the good music they were making could no longer be contained.

  • You misinterpreted my statement. Music doesn't suck because of major labels, it sucks because the of the artist and whomever is producing it. I explained the business side of it, saying that because of the last 10 or so years of illegal file sharing...CD sales PLUMMETED, meaning major labels can't afford to put a band that might be REALLY good out there. Albums are free to make you know, they cost quite a bit to make something decent in quality. All to be paid back by the artist.

  • Excuse me, AREN'T free. Do you realize how much money goes into promoting a band through a major label? putting them on the road? I'm surprised at 32 you aren't aware of the effects of the mp3. My advice? Support the band you love by buying their shit and be proactive, simple..regardless of major or indie label. Not all is bad though and now the doors are wide open for anyone trying to get out there; Myspace, TuneCore, iTunes..etc. We hit a frontier like the 50s did.

  • smart man it's sad but it's true. i was in music for awhile till i realized what u said. now i only do it for my self. great common

  • see...someone who knows wtf I'm talking about! Only another musician would understand. It takes being on the inside to know whats up. Rock fans have become less rabid (and more ignorant) about new music. BUT dont give in man, several avenues for independent artists are available-- but you really gotta push through and network with others and be persistent.

  • I love how many of my comments have negatives. None of these people can intelligently contend what I have to say--first off they aren't musicians out there playing gigs, meeting fans/connections, busting their fucking ass creating shit they are passionate about..so fuck em. I love rock n roll, always will, but its fans just don't get it anymore. They just want it all for free, after all your hard work. You know what I'm talking about...its LITERALLY blood, sweat and tears being a musician.

  • Excuse, me. I mean RTV, (RealityTV) since they do very little music playing, they don't deserve the "Music" title anymore.

  • Paris Hilton is what happened.

  • ha, so paris is the real reason we aren't hearing good, new music? whatever...

  • I was being FACETIOUS. at your age you should able to pick up on that. Someone just doesn't get the big picture. Oh well, can't put pearls before swine

  • I don't read into comments on here. I just try to take them for what they're worth. That being said, this is the last comment you'll see from me on this vid for a while. it's time to let the music speak for itself.

  • Mike killed it when he jumped off stage at 7:48 and disappeared into the mass of insane humanity!

  • RIP layne.....

  • woah haha layne looks kinda like kurt cobain with his hair cut like that and those glasses haha

  • alice in chains e fodaaa!!!!!!!!!!!

  • aduhhh..

  • MTV was never cool. Alice in Chains was too cool, so MTV looks cool.

  • @Johnnywad89 Mtv was the shit when it only played music. and Beavis and Butthead of course.

  • you're soooo right man!

  • Layne was, no, he is a great frontman. I miss him everyday. Love, love you Layne ;)

  • You´re absolutely right... MTV was cool, now... what a shame! is a s...!!!!

  • angry chair was the shit...

  • where was this filmed? pier 48 also?

  • i think so. but i'm not sure.

pier 48 is the one where the Live And Loud concert of Nirvana was right?

  • yeah

  • long live the 90's and Layne!

all the amazing artist that passed away!

damn..i had barely turned 1 year old a few days before this performance...i missed out, but at least the music still lives...

  • God that voice... so amazing!!!

    R.I.P Layne

  • pretty cool..those days of university life...nice

  • Agree with all your comments, I'm 17 and I really wish I was born at least 10 years earlier. Music now just doesn't have an edge like it used to..there's no originality

  • aic is my favorite band but get a lod of this. i'm 27 and i wish i was born 20 years earlier because i got robbed musically. i was only in my teens when aic was big but most teens have bad taste in music. i missed out on a lot of good 70's and 80's too. at least you're ahead of the game though. today, music is crap, rock or rap. both have no real message anymore and don't tell good stories like they used to.

  • dude im 17,

i only listen to AIC and Mad Season and other early 90's bands

i dont know anyone who likes the same music as me

  • I do! MAd Seasons awesome, especially with mike mccready on guitar...

  • I totally understand what you mean! I envy my dad being able to listen to an actual vinyl copy of Led Zeppelin IV...what a precicious time for music. It truly does blow, and it seems like no one takes pride in their live shows anymore. At least we still got Springsteen to take care of that, the man's an animal!

  • yes the 90s was and is the best.....there are like only a few cool new bands today! Seattle bands,,,and bands like stone temple pilots and smashing pumpkins,,,,jus plain awesome!!!!!

  • the 90s was the best time for band all the best bands come out then

im only 17 and i think that. i wasn't old enough to remember the 90s but dam now i wish i was

  • I'm 26 and all my favorite bands are from the 90's. AIC is definitely one of them!!

  • Thank you MTV for turning your back on great music.

Now we've got Three Doors Down to sing along to (puke)!

  • Lol..Ur Comment Made My Day..So True

  • It's a bizzare thing... So many of us seem to think that way, still MTV keeps aiming at the ultra commercial and pop-minded. I tell ya, I miss the 90s soooo bad. When rockers had hair, attitude and talent and music had depth. These days it's all about clean cut, geek rock. I can't stand it. But maybe I'm just getting old...

  • Dont worry, I am only 22 so I missed the early 90s since I was too young to appreciate it. I came of age at the turn of the millenium when it was teen pop, nu metal and emo and I can tell you the alternative rock of 1991-1997 is SO much better then 98% of the music churned out today!

  • I was 20 when I started listening to all that stuff back in 1990. Man I wish I was there again... Funny I wouldn't have thought guys your age wouldn't be into that stuff. Congrats on having good taste. Nu Metal was just a fad, like emo and all that shit. Good music survives the trends and leaves the fakes in the dirt. I miss AIC, I miss the early PJ, I miss Soundgarden and all that scene. I sound like an old fart, it's scary...

  • Most of my friends prefer music of the 90s over the 00s, though there is stuff we like from this decade it's not as much as decades past. If you love 90s alt rock so much check out my youtube videos where I countdown my 30 fav songs of alt rock for each year of the 90s. Just click on devasic1.

  • agree 100% dude, music these days sucks ass. im 30 and to me the early 90's was a golden age for music, it was raw, had attitude and you lived for it

  • now a days music is like two chords played over and over, the simpler the more popular

  • Ain't that the truth.

    And it SUCKS!!!!!

  • @gongabush i know sucks doesnt it, this kind of great music just doesnt exist anymore, THINK ABOUT THAT!!!! IT DOESNT EXIST??? WHAT THE FUCK, THIS IS MUSIC, FUCKING AWESOME, bad audio quality though

  • It's so hard to believe that a band like Alice In Chains was on MTV

You'll never see anything like this on MTV again =(

  • Great point. I guess it was much different in '92.

  • i miss layne

drugs are only good in moderation kids remember that

  • huh? youre telling kids to take drugs?

  • yea

    and?

  • lol

  • well, the comment may not be so retarded. as i know before Layne got to sing, he played drums on other heavy/glam metal bands.

he stopped playing drums when he decided to sing, and a while then, he met Jerry and the rest is history.

  • The audience just goes wild!

  • i've always imagined that if layne didnt succumb to the drugs and the band was able to keep going that layne would have been able to start playin guitar on more songs that required 2 guitars, though jerry was so damn good you barely noticed it live.

  • Thats moronic to assume such an ignorant thing, people do drugs to escape their demons their emotions are already most likely in place.talent and God-given voice also has to be there.

  • I cant think of a better way to ring in the new year.

  • ahhh... the good old days of MTV...

  • a new album would be disrespecting layne's legacy. they should change the name and go on cause its not alice without layne

  • We all love and miss Layne, but your comment is retarded...

  • I dont even know what to say, this is just way too awesome..

  • Would kill for skills like these.

  • wow layne with a guitar I thought he only did drumming. Thats fucking cool

  • lol no ... layne wrote the music and lyrics for this song as well as hate to feel and head creeps i believe....there are also more i think

  • Lol still cool.

  • thts the stupidest shit ive ever read he never played the drums with alice in chains u tool

  • hell yeah!

  • Man...that was one of the best live videos I have seen. Layne was definitely in his prime here.

  • Love watching these bands in their prime.

  • man ringing in the new year like this and nirvana the next!are you kiddin me!mtv and music will never be like that again!i feel bad for those who missed it but great to see it relived somewhat through the internet

  • yeah i feel bad for me too

  • And eddie vedder.

  • The one difference with layne an jerry is they could sing and omg the sick harmonies. Most grunge bands could not sing worths a shit sept for this guys scott wayland and chris cornell most of them were winey bitches.

  • You got that.

  • hopefully you think vedder could sing too, because calling him "whiny" cant be more off =]

  • Best band of all time.

  • This is awesome thank you

  • Layne is not one of the best all-time; he is the best. But you can't tell his story without including the drug issue.

  • no shit

  • chill man. dont get your panties in a bundle

  • I think some AIC fans just get tired of all the AIC videos turning into a debate over Kurt/Eddie/Chris. The person above you was paying respect to Layne, and you say "What about Kurt?" like we are obligated to pay respect to him every time we speak of Layne. If we want to discuss Kurt, we'll go to a Nirvana video. (Not to be an asshole, just saying;)

  • no your not being an ass hole that makes complete sense and i think the exact same thing

  • Wow, your obviosly a dumb fuck tool. He did drums before alice in chains. I never said he did it for alice in chains. You're such a dumb fuck! Read before you fucking comment. No need for swearing aswell you cretent. He played drums at age 11.

  • i think you should chill out im not an expert on layne staley why dont you tell me some more about him

  • Well, you cursed at me first. He played drums at age 11. I know he plays guitar already.

  • jerry and layne two incredible music man..Its sad to know that there wont be another grunge voice..

  • jerry and layne two incredible music man..Its sad to know that there wont be another grunge voice..

  • ha this is fuckin amazin

  • Layne's voice was just fucking incredible, that creepy vibrato he had was something else.

  • yes, that's RIGHT. good post, craig!

  • I heard they were making a movie on Layne and his life. Although I think it would be interesting to see it happen it will never bring our Layne Staley back, RIP Layne we all love you down here.

  • yes but it is being made by the ppl who did the book same company which means they are going to whore out his drug addiction!! but the dude playing layne DOES LOOK LIKE LAYNE..I wont go see it tho let him RIP

  • I'm not really sure if the company would whore out his drug addiction. At least I would hope they wouldn't. Lathan McKay who is protraying Layne Staley in that movie said he has alot of respect for Layne and Jerry and that he would want to portray Layne in a positive light, that way Layne's memory isn't run into the ground by his untimely demise. Hopefully the movie makes it to the big screen, I might go and see it if the previews are good. Only time will tell.

  • TheFragile89, I totally agree with every word you just said.

  • damn wish there was more of this than the emo and screamo shit that all sounds the same

  • frisbi morta is a great band from argenti here in you tube

  • This Show sounded Pretty Intense Alot Of energy.

    Fuckin Yee haaww Mother Fucker!

  • cool to see staley playing a geetar

  • cool to see staley playing a geetar

  • cool to see staley playing a geetar

  • i wouldnt class aic as grunge cos they have a lot of heavier songs.

  • They aren't grunge, grunge isn't even a type of music, its just a corporate label. Alice In Chains came out of Seattle so they were immediately categorized as grunge. They were always more metal/hard rock.

  • agree.

BUT - whatever 'type' they were, they were fucking awesome, thats a fact

  • We need a new Grunge band!!!!!!!NOW!!!!

  • How very dare you! Grunge is about not giving a shit and extremely catchy riffs. BRING BACK GRUNGE! The 90s just rocked
