@SexyAICfan87 Yes indeed. I am glad I saw them back at Lolapoalooza in California in 94. But sorry to say I was not surprised when he died a few years later.
This was such an awesome era of music. I remember buying Facelift back when I was 13 after seeing Man in the Box for the first time on HeadBanger's Ball. I knew that Alice in Chains' music would be a huge part of my life. Needless to say I'm still a fan. Layne is missed but his spirit will always be there wherever Alice in Chains is playing.
@DEPkevinMN lol HOLY SH!T MTV PLAYING MUSIC, THAT IS GOOD NONE THE LESS!?! WHAT?! Oh yeah... I remember.. barely... it's like the 60's lol if you remember you weren't there!.... I remember seeing an AIC debut video right before the dude from Blind Melon died on H... that drugs taken far too many a great musician!
@espertempo i was there too,bro.......im 44, i feel ya. the very air we breathed was different, words cant do that period justice. fortunately we werent wrong and this shit has strength enough to resonate.gotta go dry my eyes now,
Hard to believe it has been so long since they broke in the mainstream...almost 20 years? Some reason I always missed Layne more then any other lost musician...his voice was amazingly powerful!!!
RIP Layne - you touched many souls at the cost of yours.
They almost always have different guitars turned up at different loudness levels, and if a lead singer doesn't play guitar very often, they're not going to turn him up as loud as the other guys because he is more likely to screw up and he's not carrying the rhythm of the song as much.
a new generation of musicians with heart and passion will rise, just like 20 years ago!
you see kids these days, they're playing 90's stuff more than 00's music, it's simple: they're drawn to real music instead of gimmicks, we're 'bout to hit 1990 again.
The formula for commercializing music has been decided since the 50s...its nothing new at all. The only difference is that because of the advent of mp3 and file sharing the industry no longer has the money they used to to have decent artist development anymore. So now what you're stuck with is all the bubblegum acts; the big labels can only safely afford to push that shit because they know its going to sell. A bitter pill, but blame 11 years of illegal downloading and lack of CD sales.
are you seriously trying to tell us that the reason music sucks today is because people download illegal copies of songs? good music is good music and will reach the ears of the people regardless. just look at the band Sublime. Started out on a small indi lable, got popular in their own part of the country, and the good music they were making could no longer be contained.
You misinterpreted my statement. Music doesn't suck because of major labels, it sucks because the of the artist and whomever is producing it. I explained the business side of it, saying that because of the last 10 or so years of illegal file sharing...CD sales PLUMMETED, meaning major labels can't afford to put a band that might be REALLY good out there. Albums are free to make you know, they cost quite a bit to make something decent in quality. All to be paid back by the artist.
Excuse me, AREN'T free. Do you realize how much money goes into promoting a band through a major label? putting them on the road? I'm surprised at 32 you aren't aware of the effects of the mp3. My advice? Support the band you love by buying their shit and be proactive, simple..regardless of major or indie label. Not all is bad though and now the doors are wide open for anyone trying to get out there; Myspace, TuneCore, iTunes..etc. We hit a frontier like the 50s did.
see...someone who knows wtf I'm talking about! Only another musician would understand. It takes being on the inside to know whats up. Rock fans have become less rabid (and more ignorant) about new music. BUT dont give in man, several avenues for independent artists are available-- but you really gotta push through and network with others and be persistent.
I love how many of my comments have negatives. None of these people can intelligently contend what I have to say--first off they aren't musicians out there playing gigs, meeting fans/connections, busting their fucking ass creating shit they are passionate about..so fuck em. I love rock n roll, always will, but its fans just don't get it anymore. They just want it all for free, after all your hard work. You know what I'm talking about...its LITERALLY blood, sweat and tears being a musician.
I was being FACETIOUS. at your age you should able to pick up on that. Someone just doesn't get the big picture. Oh well, can't put pearls before swine
I don't read into comments on here. I just try to take them for what they're worth. That being said, this is the last comment you'll see from me on this vid for a while. it's time to let the music speak for itself.
First of all, I would like to say there will only be one Layne but if you haven't heard the new lead singer for AIC, please check out my videos!
He surprised the hell my buds and I when we saw them play over the summer. We actually thought when we showed up five minutes into the concert that a CD was playing the song "Again" over the PA's but when we finally got over the ridge we soon discovered that it was Duvall singing.
Agree with all your comments, I'm 17 and I really wish I was born at least 10 years earlier. Music now just doesn't have an edge like it used to..there's no originality
aic is my favorite band but get a lod of this. i'm 27 and i wish i was born 20 years earlier because i got robbed musically. i was only in my teens when aic was big but most teens have bad taste in music. i missed out on a lot of good 70's and 80's too. at least you're ahead of the game though. today, music is crap, rock or rap. both have no real message anymore and don't tell good stories like they used to.
I totally understand what you mean! I envy my dad being able to listen to an actual vinyl copy of Led Zeppelin IV...what a precicious time for music. It truly does blow, and it seems like no one takes pride in their live shows anymore. At least we still got Springsteen to take care of that, the man's an animal!
yes the 90s was and is the best.....there are like only a few cool new bands today! Seattle bands,,,and bands like stone temple pilots and smashing pumpkins,,,,jus plain awesome!!!!!
It's a bizzare thing... So many of us seem to think that way, still MTV keeps aiming at the ultra commercial and pop-minded. I tell ya, I miss the 90s soooo bad. When rockers had hair, attitude and talent and music had depth. These days it's all about clean cut, geek rock. I can't stand it. But maybe I'm just getting old...
Dont worry, I am only 22 so I missed the early 90s since I was too young to appreciate it. I came of age at the turn of the millenium when it was teen pop, nu metal and emo and I can tell you the alternative rock of 1991-1997 is SO much better then 98% of the music churned out today!
I was 20 when I started listening to all that stuff back in 1990. Man I wish I was there again... Funny I wouldn't have thought guys your age wouldn't be into that stuff. Congrats on having good taste. Nu Metal was just a fad, like emo and all that shit. Good music survives the trends and leaves the fakes in the dirt. I miss AIC, I miss the early PJ, I miss Soundgarden and all that scene. I sound like an old fart, it's scary...

@gongabush i know sucks doesnt it, this kind of great music just doesnt exist anymore, THINK ABOUT THAT!!!! IT DOESNT EXIST??? WHAT THE FUCK, THIS IS MUSIC, FUCKING AWESOME, bad audio quality though
i've always imagined that if layne didnt succumb to the drugs and the band was able to keep going that layne would have been able to start playin guitar on more songs that required 2 guitars, though jerry was so damn good you barely noticed it live.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If Layne wasn't doing the drugs, AIC probably wouldn't have been this good. Sorry to say it, but misery pushes a person's emotions, and that produces great music.
Thats moronic to assume such an ignorant thing, people do drugs to escape their demons their emotions are already most likely in place.talent and God-given voice also has to be there.
man ringing in the new year like this and nirvana the next!are you kiddin me!mtv and music will never be like that again!i feel bad for those who missed it but great to see it relived somewhat through the internet
The one difference with layne an jerry is they could sing and omg the sick harmonies. Most grunge bands could not sing worths a shit sept for this guys scott wayland and chris cornell most of them were winey bitches.
I think some AIC fans just get tired of all the AIC videos turning into a debate over Kurt/Eddie/Chris. The person above you was paying respect to Layne, and you say "What about Kurt?" like we are obligated to pay respect to him every time we speak of Layne. If we want to discuss Kurt, we'll go to a Nirvana video. (Not to be an asshole, just saying;)
Wow, your obviosly a dumb fuck tool. He did drums before alice in chains. I never said he did it for alice in chains. You're such a dumb fuck! Read before you fucking comment. No need for swearing aswell you cretent. He played drums at age 11.
I heard they were making a movie on Layne and his life. Although I think it would be interesting to see it happen it will never bring our Layne Staley back, RIP Layne we all love you down here.
yes but it is being made by the ppl who did the book same company which means they are going to whore out his drug addiction!! but the dude playing layne DOES LOOK LIKE LAYNE..I wont go see it tho let him RIP
I'm not really sure if the company would whore out his drug addiction. At least I would hope they wouldn't. Lathan McKay who is protraying Layne Staley in that movie said he has alot of respect for Layne and Jerry and that he would want to portray Layne in a positive light, that way Layne's memory isn't run into the ground by his untimely demise. Hopefully the movie makes it to the big screen, I might go and see it if the previews are good. Only time will tell.
They aren't grunge, grunge isn't even a type of music, its just a corporate label. Alice In Chains came out of Seattle so they were immediately categorized as grunge. They were always more metal/hard rock.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
um no grunge is dead.and grunge is nothing but shitty power cords and feedbacked solos.you want to hear real music this is real music just like pantera the classic bands.

Three things:
1. Jerrycantrells solo was power ,definitely true.
2. All the filesharing IS ruining the músic industry (the mainstream acts anyways)
3. I never saw this thats fuckin weird how he was tryin to look like kurt cobain i wonder if that was a joke or what, creepy.

i've always imagined that if layne didnt succumb to the drugs and the band was able to keep going that layne would have been able to start playin guitar on more songs that required 2 guitars, though jerry was so damn good you barely noticed it live.

If Layne wasn't doing the drugs, AIC probably wouldn't have been this good. Sorry to say it, but misery pushes a person's emotions, and that produces great music.
jtomasik 3 years ago
Thats moronic to assume such an ignorant thing, people do drugs to escape their demons their emotions are already most likely in place.talent and God-given voice also has to be there.

a new album would be disrespecting layne's legacy. they should change the name and go on cause its not alice without layne

And eddie vedder.
bigboss25262 3 years ago
The one difference with layne an jerry is they could sing and omg the sick harmonies. Most grunge bands could not sing worths a shit sept for this guys scott wayland and chris cornell most of them were winey bitches.
tdefelice 3 years ago
You got that.
etuberalism 3 years ago

Layne is not one of the best all-time; he is the best. But you can't tell his story without including the drug issue.

Excuse me for not taking into account AIC fans are also Nirvana fans. Asshole!
markbart 3 years ago
chill man. dont get your panties in a bundle
liveandletrock864 3 years ago 5
I think some AIC fans just get tired of all the AIC videos turning into a debate over Kurt/Eddie/Chris. The person above you was paying respect to Layne, and you say "What about Kurt?" like we are obligated to pay respect to him every time we speak of Layne. If we want to discuss Kurt, we'll go to a Nirvana video. (Not to be an asshole, just saying;)

no your not being an ass hole that makes complete sense and i think the exact same thing

I heard they were making a movie on Layne and his life. Although I think it would be interesting to see it happen it will never bring our Layne Staley back, RIP Layne we all love you down here.
Amazonian24 3 years ago 8
yes but it is being made by the ppl who did the book same company which means they are going to whore out his drug addiction!! but the dude playing layne DOES LOOK LIKE LAYNE..I wont go see it tho let him RIP
k4aic 3 years ago
I'm not really sure if the company would whore out his drug addiction. At least I would hope they wouldn't. Lathan McKay who is protraying Layne Staley in that movie said he has alot of respect for Layne and Jerry and that he would want to portray Layne in a positive light, that way Layne's memory isn't run into the ground by his untimely demise. Hopefully the movie makes it to the big screen, I might go and see it if the previews are good. Only time will tell.

i wouldnt class aic as grunge cos they have a lot of heavier songs.
AililMacRoth 3 years ago 3
They aren't grunge, grunge isn't even a type of music, its just a corporate label. Alice In Chains came out of Seattle so they were immediately categorized as grunge. They were always more metal/hard rock.
TheFragile89 3 years ago 6
agree.
BUT - whatever 'type' they were, they were fucking awesome, thats a fact
