Well, for anyone who has paid sustained attention, this was pretty predictable and part of the Western US/NATO alliance to begin with: destablization with ultimate goal of total control. While Ghaddafi was by no means a saint, his economic policies actually resulted in vast improvements of infra-structure which benefited most Libyans. The same cannot be said, of Pinochet, for example, where the wealth trickled up, and not down. It's all about privatization of national resources + geopolitics.

Libyan fighters had their own agenda, while the west had theirs, thus they worked together to conspire and overthrow the gaddafi regime.

And arming one side is in fact what the US and NATO have been doing all along.
