I saw this film on TV in the early 80's, when I was a young girl, and it left a huge impression on me. I think it is a masterpiece on violence and the human nature. Today I had the immense pleasure of meeting Peter Brook in person in Milan. I told him how much I loved this film and he was pleasantly surprised. A very nice man indeed.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to get riled up over symbol analysis. I'm just thinking that it's not the best fit for this one. (Ie: as a symbol to allude to Jesus usually entails resurrection or some sort of sacrifice. That's why I would say that this is more representative of the death of religion that occurs, much like how any sort of religion was persecuted during the French Revolution.)
An obvious allegory to WW2 but more broadly to what people will do when left to their own devices. It has happened to every society in the history of the planet.
The Lord of the Flies is, truly and honestly, my favorite book. Here I was thinking I'd hate it for four years, letting it collect dust in my closet. I picked it up a week ago and read the whole thing in one sitting. It was truly amazing. I have to say though, the film from 1990's is horrible. I hope to see this one --- I really want to see what's in my head at least slightly resemble what's on screen.
what was the song called you used for this? because i have been trying to find it for the longest time ever since my dance studio did a ballet piece to it :P haha please help mee :) and this was very good :)
I have justed read the book again after reading it for GCSE Englishn when I was about 13. I am now 35 and wanted to read the book again because I thought it would make more since. We also watched the video in our english class too. So nice to watch, want to watch the whole thing over again.
@jondoethegreat the song is taken from the Daren Aronofsky film Requiem for a dream. The soundtrack was composed by Clint Mansell and performed by the Kronos Quartet.

I have always loved the novel, but never saw this film version until recently. I was impressed. It's clear that the director respected the book, and made every effort to retain both the plot elements and the thematic concerns. Bravo.
I first read the book with 12 and always had great respect for Ralph. He stayed sensible and decent to the very end - you can't demand more. He lost the power-struggle to a ruthless and mean opponent - himself only using fair means, whereas Jack employed deceit and intimidation.
For me "Lord of the flies" is together with Orwell's "Animal farm" the best political allegory I know.
i disagree...he kinda of shifted. sure, in the end he stayed true to himself, but it was only after getting a grip on himself midway through the novel and being pursued by Jack and his cronies. the only two who truly stayed true to themselves were simon and piggy....sad, both died
As elected chief Ralph had greater responsibility: he made concessions to Jack and the hunters to prevent discontent and to keep things working as a whole. At one point he wasn't sure if he should stay chief, but he never lost his decency.
Without him Jack would have become "dictator" very early on, and Piggy (and Simon) would have been mobbed from the beginning - only Ralph's protection shielded Piggy from Jacks bullying.
what? ralph was always true. sure simon and piggy were true as well, but ralph always wanted to do what was right. it shows that without rules well society would shatter. he had rules, and it was sad they had both died.
Unfortunately...that's not true. Both Piggy and Ralph participated in Simon's murder. They got caught up in Jack's fever pitch just like the rest of the boys, even if it was only temporary. Also, Ralph had to lose Piggy and be hunted like a pig before he recognized the end of innocence (the "beast," or evil inside of us). Simon is the ONLY character who never once falters; there are plenty of examples where Ralph does. Piggy does as well, though not as pronounced as Ralph
Simon was a Jesus-like character. He is the only one who TRULY recognized what the beast was, both literally and symbolically. He was on his way to the beach to tell all the rest of the boys and free them from their fears and hopefully from their inner beast, but they rejected him (assuming he was the beast during their bloodlust dance) and killed him.
@Lexiiedollx3 Nope, I was a product of Wamsley in high school and a plethora of great college professors. Also, when I did my teaching internship I focused on this book, so I did a ton of research in addition to drawing my own conclusions based off my reading ;)
@ramennoodleking my teacher, mr. rizzuto said the same exact thing! that's why I was wondering. this book is fantastic, and you must be really smart! thanks so much!
@Raegh Do you not realize that alot of literature was written with Biblical references, symbolism, and metaphor? Just because something can (and does, btw) mirror something Biblical doesn't mean anyone is pushing Christianity on anyone. Simon does fit into the "Jesus" role, though there are multiple interpretations for everything. It's the same way authors make allusions to Greek mythology; it's for the sake of literature. Dunno how else to explain it to you.
The film was produced in 1963 and is well made all around - a very literate translation of the powerful book. The remake, to my taste, tried to "Americanize" the material and by comparison to the first version - is ludicrous. It looks like a 1980's travelogue. I'm not sure of the availability of the original film but do search for it.
while escaping from a nuclear bomb, a plane crashes down in a deserted island and the only survivors are various little boys. They struggle to survive the threat of a bestie that resides n the island, little they know that perhaps the beastie was in fact their inner selves.

Jesus Rocks my socks off :) good thing im never coming back to this page again so you guys cant say anything dumb...well you could it would just be pointless
The first pictures of the movie were great. They simbolize what the children lost after all the events in the island. They show the civilization which they little by little started to lose. I loved this book because it shows what human beings are capable of doing, and that is horrifying
The whole story is allegorical. Ralph represents democracy, an equal society. Jack is the opposite, he represents the strength, violent but also charismatic power ; his right arm, Roger, is crualty and sadism, rise of fascism in the shadow of the strength power.
Piggy represents knowledge and science, but also dependance and addiction ; despised by the strength power but also needed (glasses).
Simon represents wisdom and truth, he could be kind of an allegory of Jesus by his death.
some also believe it's a religious allegory. sometimes ralph is compared to gabriel, and jack is compared to lucifer. sometimes the island is compared to the garden of eve, etc.
just because you don't believe in the contents of the bible doesn't mean that you can't study it, make comments on it, etc.
it's a fucking religious allegory. don't tell me just because he didn't consider Jesus his savior that he would never ever write a book about religion,
i don't really want to study the bible coz its not exactly the most politically correct book. i don't approve of it's views- one thing i remember was a poster on a billboard. it said "Fags die. God Laughs. ps 2:4" i have a lot of gay/ bi mates, and i don't think thats very thoughtful.
Golding wasn't bothered with religion, but, like Blake, he just had a problem with authority.
i dont want to get into some sweary religious arguement... so lets just stay cool.
no it doesn't. Alright Golding wasn't jewish and he wrote the book to talk about the innate evil in all humans. Every human has some sort of evil in them and all it takes is the loss of civilization to come out. Even ralph at the very end started forgetting what the fire's purpose was for and had doubts about civilization and at one point considered joining Jack's tribe for the meat.
I think Golding had first of all a shrewd insight into human nature and wanted to show what is possible if the power is no longer balanced - the gradual change from democracy to dictatorship. In the end Ralph is alone - all others either fanaticised or intimidated.
It's primarily a psychological book with very different characters, just what you encounter in real life.
its good vs evil. Everyone has an innate evil inside of them. Civilization stops the evil, but once you take away that the evil seaps out and takes over. Thats waht happened to jack,
I think it's mainly their different characters: Jack does not bear not to be chief, and puts very much energy and hatred into the power struggle. This "evil energy" helps him to win over an opponent who is not prepared for this meanness. Ralph just wants to keep society functioning and be rescued - he is by his nature far less liable to give in to evil.
Yes, the layer of civilization is thin. But nevertheless things do not automatically go wrong by some obscure "necessity" - history is made by people and their concrete actions.
I guess without Jack and his strong ambitions, nobody could/would have endangered Ralphs position as chief - and then the dramatic events wouldn't have occurred. But after Jack gained total power, the majority "howled with the wolves" - partly out of fascination, partly out of fear and intimidation.
Okay if you read the book you see that Piggy is constantely trying to get everybody to do what he wants, and Simon didn't have to die (it was out of the stupidity of Jack that Simon died) he came down from the mountain screaming that the monster was really the parachutest.
Ralph is strong and self-assured, so he is instantly respected. Piggy is an outsider, despite being very intelligent. Most fail to see his qualities because he is fat and has "ass-mar".
But while Ralph and Piggy want to convince with arguments, Jack instantly uses brutal methods when he is "in power", even trying to kill Ralph in the end. That's Democracy versus brutal Dictatorship.
Fuck you Piggy should not have to die. he was small fat but still had a heart. They just throw a boulder on him and cracked his skull open. I almost cried when that happen. I yelled fuck you jack fuck you and I hope the military shuv an m4 up your ass and let it pop. Wow

@ramennoodleking but the parallel isn't that strong.
Jesus' death had some effect and later was followed by resurrection.
Simon's death did nothing. He didn't come back in any way shape or form, and neither did his realizations/ideas.
I think he was more of a symbol for spirituality/religion itself rather then a Jesus of sorts.

The first pictures of the movie were great. They simbolize what the children lost after all the events in the island. They show the civilization which they little by little started to lose. I loved this book because it shows what human beings are capable of doing, and that is horrifying

that first bit was stolen from the start of the movie so he didnt actually do it...

Simon represents wisdom and truth, he could be kind of an allegory of Jesus by his death.

some also believe it's a religious allegory. sometimes ralph is compared to gabriel, and jack is compared to lucifer. sometimes the island is compared to the garden of eve, etc.

oh, god... not this again.
Right, let's get this clear. GOLDING WAS AN ATHIEST. Simon has a few references to jesus but that was it.
hannah26williams 2 years ago
just because you don't believe in the contents of the bible doesn't mean that you can't study it, make comments on it, etc.
it's a fucking religious allegory. don't tell me just because he didn't consider Jesus his savior that he would never ever write a book about religion,
FoxtrotNinja 2 years ago
i don't really want to study the bible coz its not exactly the most politically correct book. i don't approve of it's views- one thing i remember was a poster on a billboard. it said "Fags die. God Laughs. ps 2:4" i have a lot of gay/ bi mates, and i don't think thats very thoughtful.
Golding wasn't bothered with religion, but, like Blake, he just had a problem with authority.
i dont want to get into some sweary religious arguement... so lets just stay cool.
hannah26williams 2 years ago
If you actually READ the bible, you'll find that ps 2:4 does NOT say that. Most Christians have awfully skewed versions of their own religion.
I think Ghandi described it best when he said "Thank the lord for all the Christians; if not for them, I would be one."
The bible didn't offend you- it was an awfully misunderstood bible verse put in other words by some idiot.

But the movie has a Jewish Concept!
Crossfire182 2 years ago
oh no...
vickywilliams109 2 years ago
no it doesn't.
Cap1108 2 years ago 4
I think Golding had first of all a shrewd insight into human nature and wanted to show what is possible if the power is no longer balanced - the gradual change from democracy to dictatorship. In the end Ralph is alone - all others either fanaticised or intimidated.
It's primarily a psychological book with very different characters, just what you encounter in real life.
eltamin1966 2 years ago 2
its good vs evil. Everyone has an innate evil inside of them. Civilization stops the evil, but once you take away that the evil seaps out and takes over. Thats waht happened to jack,
Cap1108 2 years ago
I think it's mainly their different characters: Jack does not bear not to be chief, and puts very much energy and hatred into the power struggle. This "evil energy" helps him to win over an opponent who is not prepared for this meanness. Ralph just wants to keep society functioning and be rescued - he is by his nature far less liable to give in to evil.

It's 2 show that there is a very thin lie between order and chaos. that's how golding described it.
morwenmur 2 years ago 2
Yes, the layer of civilization is thin. But nevertheless things do not automatically go wrong by some obscure "necessity" - history is made by people and their concrete actions.
I guess without Jack and his strong ambitions, nobody could/would have endangered Ralphs position as chief - and then the dramatic events wouldn't have occurred. But after Jack gained total power, the majority "howled with the wolves" - partly out of fascination, partly out of fear and intimidation.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
even though this is ur first video its still really good. i think Piggy really deserved to die. But did they really have to stab Simon?
halaykurdi 2 years ago
What the fucking hell, why?!
kankypoo 2 years ago
Okay if you read the book you see that Piggy is constantely trying to get everybody to do what he wants, and Simon didn't have to die (it was out of the stupidity of Jack that Simon died) he came down from the mountain screaming that the monster was really the parachutest.
halaykurdi 2 years ago 2
Ok if you read the book you'll see why they Do need to do what he wants, he and ralph are the only sensible ones there.
DaleSparrow 2 years ago 2
Ralph is strong and self-assured, so he is instantly respected. Piggy is an outsider, despite being very intelligent. Most fail to see his qualities because he is fat and has "ass-mar".
But while Ralph and Piggy want to convince with arguments, Jack instantly uses brutal methods when he is "in power", even trying to kill Ralph in the end. That's Democracy versus brutal Dictatorship.
eltamin1966 2 years ago 2
Fuck you Piggy should not have to die. he was small fat but still had a heart. They just throw a boulder on him and cracked his skull open. I almost cried when that happen. I yelled fuck you jack fuck you and I hope the military shuv an m4 up your ass and let it pop. Wow
