Because it allows Cas to grow as a character and his relationship with dean an co. to evolve and complicate. It just makes sense :) And then of course theres the obvious: more screen time for yummy Misha ;P

Cas will always be a supporting character, and plus they didn't even renew his contract so who knows how many episodes he will be in this season. If you're a fan of Cas you should know that this is probably his last season on Supernatural.
