I love elfen lied its one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking anime i have ever seen. and this song truely is beautiful and sad. it shows us all no matter all the despair you've been through, or the sins you've done their is that one person who loves you. lucy/nyu and kohta are a perfect example of that.

@nikomitzuki The first two stanzas are actually Bible verses. "The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom..." (the first one) is Psalms 37:30 while "Blessed is the man that endureth temptation..." is from James 1:12.

Because of this, I personally believe that the person is simply asking for forgiveness from God. The narrator of the song is asking for redemption for some terrible deed that they did because they cannot forgive themselves.

@nikomitzuki However, if you add the show in with the song, the person believes that they were never forgiven for something that they have done. They are on self-destructive path that they wish they can escape from, therefore the song turns into a plea of desperation. Another interpretation is that the song is mocking the characters of the show. It's almost saying, "You wish for forgiveness, but you will never get it because you don't deserve it." It makes the show that much more tragic.

@noahstavish13 agreed :) Even though I would have liked it to be a little more toned down ( nudity wise I mean :/) Elfen Lied is an amazing show.... I'm glad that there are people out there who can see past the blood and nudity and truly see it for what it is. Kudos to you :)

You forgot to translate two parts of the song: "Kyrie, fons bonitatis" (Lord, fountain of holiness) and "Quam amoena esse virgo creditur" (How lovely, is this virgin who believeth.)

As a side note, "Beatus vir qui suffert tentationem. Quoniam c um probatus fuerit accipient coronam vitae" translates better as "Blessed is the man who endureth temptation. For once he hath been proven, he shall receive the crown of life." While "Ignis Divine" and translate better as "fire divine."

Elfen Lied was, and always will be the most beautiful show ever made. The true showing of humanity. The theme song becam my favorite song of all time after seeing the show.
