Sometimes they do nothing other than spill your coffee, and other times they render the engine inoperative. Bird ingestion is BAD. A finch might leave the engine with a chance, but anything bigger will cause lots of problems.

It may be that the airplane had prior issues, and coupled with bird ingestion, lost all power, but it ends there

First they show video of a plane that hits a bird, and they show how the engine flames out, and the pilot call the tower and tells them the engine is out and that they must put down.

But flam outs dont last forever, one they burn up the fuel the fires just go out, or the pilot shuts them off to keep them from exploding.

So the pilots performed a test to determine what had happened.
