What are the seasonings you use? I used to have an el salvadoran roommate who made really good beans. he used hardly anything... just cumin tumeric and i think some bell peppers. but i could never duplicate it. how any suggestions?
Hi @duenor - I wonder if you're talking about the "Casamiento" black bean recipe? Give it a google (youtube won't let me post a link to it...)
There is also a similar great Cuban dish called "Moros y Cristianos" (Moors and Christians). Google "Three Guys from Miami" with "Moros y Cristianos". It's black beans and rice. So good!
Hi @nemoryer - Thanks for your comment. Yes, it will still take around 50 minutes, even if you soak them over night. But it's worth it if you want to avoid sodium in canned beans.
You can make a bunch and beans then freeze them for later. Visit my blog Striving Bean dot com to read How to Freeze Beans (read the comments on that post too). On my blog, search on "freeze". Sorry, YouTube won't let me post a direct link.
Hi @WellConditionedChimp - My understanding is the first pot of water helps to remove the sugars in beans that cause gas. Be kind to those around you by opting for a new pot of water after you dump the quick soak water :-)
@RawfoodPete Hi - your comment about the weird sound affects made me laugh - I've laid off them since then! My videos are now under the user strivingbean
Thanks for your comment! P.S. I accidentally deleted it - did not mean to do that! YouTube won't let me retrieve it!
@GrenadeChick99 It is salted. Most often people will recommend to not salt the water (or use salted broth) because it slows cooking time. However, I've never noticed this to cause major problems with cooking time.
Also, if you want to use beans to make desserts, be sure to cook the beans in plain water (not salted)!
BTW, one 15 oz. can of beans = 1-2/3 cups cooked beans.

If I soaked it overnight, will it still take 50 minutes? I cannot eat canned beans because of the horrible amount of sodium in canned products.

Very interesting - I love beans - they somehow remind me of chocolate ;-)
