@erthtally There's no way to "abuse" a non-gameplay changing hat. Try to program in a hat. You won't be able to. If they took the time and effort (which you could not do, to be clear) to make the hats, they obviously like it. If you rain on someone's parade, (E.I. making fun of something someone made and likes) you are obviously the person who receives, complains, and never gives in return. If your mother made a casserole that you didn't like, you don't make fun of it. End of story.

@zaezae64 Game-breaking? No, just an unneccesary nuisance. For one they provided perks for having an entire "set" of items for a class (like increased damage given etc). Theyre also quite distracting- a small thing yeah but distractions even for a fraction of a second can determine the outcome of a fight. Particle effects and paints testify this - it's all about drawing attention. A client-side toggle for hats is all I ask for. And BTW; complaining is how customers make companies work harder.
The perks for having the item sets are incredibly minor.

There's a mod that makes hat's invisible.
And while I agree with you that complaints help a company better themselves, complaining about things that don't even deserve to be complained about do not. Removing hats will not better the game. Removing new weapons will not better the game. TF2 is just fine the way it is.

But for the Distractions. for me I tend to focus more on the player then the hat they're wearing. Basically ever since the Polycount update there's this virtual TF2 store. Most updates now revolve around that. Most weapons are taken off unnoficial (fan-made) updates, pretty much VALVe doesn't make anything new now, they take stuff from the community and try to make you pay for it. There's also crates, which you have to BUY keys in order to open them. It wouldn't be a problem, but crates are almost half of all the drops in the game.

@mgmike576 I still highly recommend getting TF2, buying stuff is optional (you GENERALLY will get at least one of each item anyway, through course of play) and the fact that someone is wearing a new hat or trading a weapon doesn't mean that the game is bad. Also, they do have TF2 servers that operate with more focus on gameplay rather than new weapons/attire.
@sparplug46 Yea it still looks fun, and if it's Valve it has to be an amazing game. But I just don't want it turn into a game where people have to buy things that would normally be free to everyone but instead they are only available to people willing to pay. I'm not sure if that's what's happening, but I really don't like games that do that. I mostly have been wanting to get it because of it's good reputation. So I just don't want to regret it later by Valve changing their ways for the worse.

@mgmike576 Hmmm, how to explain it in less than 500 words...
Basically ever since the Polycount update there's this virtual TF2 store. Most updates now revolve around that. Most weapons are taken off unnoficial (fan-made) updates, pretty much VALVe doesn't make anything new now, they take stuff from the community and try to make you pay for it. There's also crates, which you have to BUY keys in order to open them. It wouldn't be a problem, but crates are almost half of all the drops in the game.

So is it still worth getting? Or is Valve changing their ways?

@mgmike576 I still highly recommend getting TF2, buying stuff is optional (you GENERALLY will get at least one of each item anyway, through course of play) and the fact that someone is wearing a new hat or trading a weapon doesn't mean that the game is bad. Also, they do have TF2 servers that operate with more focus on gameplay rather than new weapons/attire.

@sparplug46 Yea it still looks fun, and if it's Valve it has to be an amazing game. But I just don't want it turn into a game where people have to buy things that would normally be free to everyone but instead they are only available to people willing to pay. I'm not sure if that's what's happening, but I really don't like games that do that. I mostly have been wanting to get it because of it's good reputation. So I just don't want to regret it later by Valve changing their ways for the worse.
