Well, this would be pretty easy to win against. Once the FFs go up just head to their base and fucking kill them. They're stuck in there until the FFs run out.
@TheDoggedWonder thats right. But the main thing of this is, that AI can use all spells in the best way. So it can happen to you with infestors etc. And thats not good :D
@TheKingdomofErnor I answered that in the description. Basically, it sometimes bugged out and made them slide through the force fields. I tried to fix it but didn't want to waste too much time on it.
Losing that many units during the first battle was unnecessary. The first force field line was great, but you should've used hallucinations afterwards to diverge damage away from your units. A few hallucinated zealots/stalkers could've saved all those sentries that perished trying to attack the army.
@TheFoxyNL Oh, I see what you mean. I had some problems in the middle of the video so I cut together two different videos in the middle. As you can see, there are 20 in the beginning but in the end there are only 19. I don't know why there was only 19 in the second version though. Maybe it got swallowed by a force field...
The main problem is here is that nobody in their right mind would constantly try to run zerglings to their death while waiting for the force field to wear off... mostly likely scenario would be that the zerglings would retreat and wait for a better opportunity to attack when the sentries are out of position.
@shootingmen No, but they regenerate energy faster than they use it up so in that sense, it's unlimited, but there's no cheat involved. These are the normal unmodified sentries.
And even if they dont wanna make the AI for /we reason, they could use a quick deply system Like click and drag a line and have a group oif sentries place fields along that line.
@magixtwister Yes, the initial cost is more than 4 force fields but then the drain will just be 4 force fields. So 16 sentries with full energy should be able to kill an infinite amount of non-massive melee units.
unless the forcefield is bigger than the roaches range, this is not true, since the forcefield does not stop the roaches from getting close enough to attack.
@QWquincyWQ What you do is force field bubble the roaches, not the sentries. That way the roaches have zero mobility, then you just simply back the sentries up until you outrange the roaches and zap away. This will only work if the zerg does not have burrow movement.
@ravel111 Actually, I worked on something like this and got it working pretty good. It also abused the splash damage of the colossi to kill a ton of roaches really fast.
I could've used hallucinations for a better outcome but the video was meant to demonstrate force field micro.
@Savci008 When did it waste force fields? The energy will regenerate faster than the sentries use it so it's not like it matters.
Also, what would you've done? Are you seriously implying that if you were in that situation you would've tried to flee with sentries against speedlings?
@Moriada No, all I'm saying is that in a real situation, the way they threw the forcefields up - even prematurely - wouldn't be quite as effective as it was this time. Sure, if you could get this many sentries you could afford that, although I don't think it'd be that efficient, as you still immobilize your whole sentry army. You didn't present whether you trap the lings when they try to flee or not either, so I can't really form a just opinion.
@Kawagata You obviously have little experience and knowledge in sentry control or general ZvP/PvZ. No matter, you can experiment, if you wish to know what I mean.
@Savci008 I am honestly interested. What would've been the optimal thing for it to do? Obviously surrounding themselves with force fields is a bad idea, what should they have done? Sure, I could've had a smaller interval when the force fields overlapped and I could've made them throw up the force fields 0.5 seconds later but that is just nitpicking.
@Moriada Don't forget that I'm not picking on you, I have rarely used the SC2 editor (at all, compared to War3) so I just speak gameplay-wise - ladder/standard melee gameplay-wise, mind you. We might just have a misunderstanding.
To put it short, the moment the zerglings get in close range you throw down forcefields even at the side where they are not coming from. I just don't see it as neccessary, since the zerg could pull back.
@Moriada And of course, if you pin yourself in place with forcefields, the zerglings can just counter attack.
Assuming you've written/planned to make the AI trap the zerglings when they try to retreat, the inner ("first") forcefields, at times, are probably not required at all. (I also suppose you did make or plan to make the AI consider whether to throw down FFs or not by checking the ling count).
@Moriada For one, delaying the forcefields would have also had the effect of allowing you to trap zerglings more easily.
That doesn't really matter, I just don't think this AI approach would work well.
Players/AIs can't use pure sentry armies and use zealots+stalkers in almost all cases - that can make forcefields unneccessary or even hurtful to your current engagement's success, as well as the later ones in case zerg retreats and runs by to attack something vulnerable.
@Savci008 You bring up a good point, however it's hard for me to write AI that considers and acts upon the rest of the game that is outside the engagement since there's no AI for anything else than the micro in this fight(I hope that makes sense).
There's no AI to trap the zerglings although it could easily be implemented. Delaying the force field surround until they get closer would also be easy.
I guess I should have used the reply function myself, since I meant to argue for FF AI being indeed hard to implement. There's a comment of yours about that.
I do agree that a so-so forcefield AI is better than almost none.
@Savci008 ai... you do realize there's only sentries in this simulation right?? And this isn't an actual skirmish?? Pure sentries will never outrun speedlings. I'm sure this video was to simulate how fast the ratio between energy cost for X # force fields per force field duration and energy regen of Y # of sentries can be easily exploited. Not for douchebags to boast how long their e-penors are. Hur hur you obviously have little experience on reading in context. If you wish to what i mean ...
@Kawagata I don't wish to argue. The only reason I commented was him mentioning this AI being an experiment at standard melee forcefield AI in one of his comments.
@Savci008 Still, I think I have to clarify about when it actually uses the surround. First of all, it automatically decides if it should surround or split or do nothing. If it surrounds or not is decided on several factors. First of all the amount of melee units in the attacking army divided by the amount of melee units in its own army. This quotient needs to be bigger than a specific amount(I think I used 5 in this example).
@Savci008 The amount of melee units in the opponent army also has to be over a specific amount. Not to mention there has to be enough sentry energy to actually do a surround.
This works pretty good even with army compositions that are not pure sentry(which of course is not a realistic simulation). If we assume the AI that uses this actually manages the army properly by having zealots in front, the AI will only try to surround ranged units so melee units will rarely get trapped.
@xxigenrulezxx If I remember correctly, you can kill an infinite amount of zerglings like this if you have 16+ sentries since they regenerate faster than they use their energy. This is the case in this video.
When he wrote "I'm still waiting for a comeback from the zerg" I was so hoping to see an ultralisk running through the forcefields and killing them all. I was so sad at the end the sentries had won :(
@DarenHD Rather, I had a less than decent PC. A combination of bad rendering settings and bad computer performance caused this quality. Trust me though, my current computer is top notch.
@proskater63 Re-read my comment. I had a less than decent PC with bad performance when I made this video but my CURRENT computer is good enough to max out any game I've tried without lag.
@x20mega He still lags even though there was only like fucking 200 units on the screen, and they're just zerglings running around, its not like it was 200 carriers or some shit

Wow, reading most of these comments literally hurt my brain. Did you even bother to read the description?
He is showcasing a god damn script. To everyone that has been discussing balance here, please break your keyboards in half and unplug your ethernet cables.
@Isundir Since people are obviously missing the point of this, I'll clarify.
The point of this video is NOT to prove a point in a balance discussion. The point is not to prove that the sentry/force field is overpowered.
It was developed in response to a thread on teamliquid that asked why the AI didn't use force fields. The responses varied from: "It's impossible" to "Wouldn't it be quite easy?"
I think it would be quite easy to make the AI use force fields decently. So I made this.
@Isundir I also disagree with your statement that it's pointless. Everything related to Starcraft 2 does not have to have an application in a real game.
I think this video was a decent demonstration of the thing it was supposed to demonstrate. I just think you misunderstood WHAT it was supposed to demonstrate.
I am looking at 1000 zerglings moving around while the AI script runs and my computer at that time was mediocre at best. Of course the performance wasn't the best.
"Hey guys, here's a video of me a-moving a 3200 min 2500 gas army against a non stim less minerals and 400 gas army." What use is this video to anyone?
@suomikarpo First of all, I'm not a-moving. I am not controlling it at all. I am trying to understand if you're deliberately being stupid or if you just failed to understand the concept of A.I.
The computer automatically attacks and determines if and where it would be good to force field. It also determines if it should split the opponent force or try to surround itself in force fields to protect from melee attackers.
I like the proof of concept although I don't think it was really necessary to show such a long fight against 100 zerglings, 100 would have proved your point well enough.
The zerglings use Just go F***ING KILL HIM! It's SUPER EFFECTIVE! =D

Wow, reading most of these comments literally hurt my brain. Did you even bother to read the description?
He is showcasing a god damn script. To everyone that has been discussing balance here, please break your keyboards in half and unplug your ethernet cables.

so it's AI doing those force fields? I mean you wrote the program for it?
MineRescuer 3 months ago
@MineRescuer Yes, that's correct.
Moriada 3 months ago 33
That's pretty incredible that you made AI do that.

For your next video lets see 1 voidray vs 5000000000 roaches, will show how OP that voidray is for sure!
Isundir 4 months ago
@Isundir Since people are obviously missing the point of this, I'll clarify.
The point of this video is NOT to prove a point in a balance discussion. The point is not to prove that the sentry/force field is overpowered.
It was developed in response to a thread on teamliquid that asked why the AI didn't use force fields. The responses varied from: "It's impossible" to "Wouldn't it be quite easy?"
I think it would be quite easy to make the AI use force fields decently. So I made this.

@Moriada I think the reason why blizzard didn't make the AI use FF's is because they would too good and accurate.

@Isundir yeah if roaches could attack air xD
MegaDani005 3 months ago
Obviously this is a pretty pointless demonstration as there is no application for this in a real game.
Isundir 4 months ago
@Isundir I also disagree with your statement that it's pointless. Everything related to Starcraft 2 does not have to have an application in a real game.
I think this video was a decent demonstration of the thing it was supposed to demonstrate. I just think you misunderstood WHAT it was supposed to demonstrate.

1:50 Trying Closing Starcraft to improve performance.
majorbeaver 4 months ago 2
@majorbeaver Your point being?
I am looking at 1000 zerglings moving around while the AI script runs and my computer at that time was mediocre at best. Of course the performance wasn't the best.
Moriada 4 months ago
"Hey guys, here's a video of me a-moving a 3200 min 2500 gas army against a non stim less minerals and 400 gas army." What use is this video to anyone?
suomikarpo 4 months ago
@suomikarpo First of all, I'm not a-moving. I am not controlling it at all. I am trying to understand if you're deliberately being stupid or if you just failed to understand the concept of A.I.
The computer automatically attacks and determines if and where it would be good to force field. It also determines if it should split the opponent force or try to surround itself in force fields to protect from melee attackers.

you got sc1 graphics on your computer?
terrdeath 4 months ago
Forcefield OP. That's the only thing I got out of this video.

@zephon13 true true
FishTurd69 4 months ago
I like the proof of concept although I don't think it was really necessary to show such a long fight against 100 zerglings, 100 would have proved your point well enough.
