@joanabanyeres No -- I was asking why you think Rene Kollo's voice was peculiar. i think he was wonderful for this; and I have him on recording singing tenor arias from Messiah, also very fine and a completely different style..
Mahler wrote his " Das Lied von der Erde " in the summer 1908, but it première taked place only on November the 20th 1911, six months after de composer's death...conducted by Bruno Walter, in Munich. The great conductor and composer Leornard Bernstein looks like Karajan, sometimes.
My apologies. Actually I'm sure it's the producers of the video who make the adjustment - it's a pet peeve of mine. Thanks for the posting. I heard this in Berlin 3 years ago in the old Schauspielhaus. My eyes were wide open that night!
Ach! Why do posters have to mess with the sound/picture timing just because they can't stand to have the conductor beating so far ahead (to their non-musical eye) of the orchestra.
@joanabanyeres Goodness! Why do you say "peculiar"? he's magnificent on this work, although I haven't heard him doing much else. Is it the fiery color that doesn't appeal to you? I really am curious.
I like both solutions. It seems that Mahler cnsidered seriously the interpretation by a baritone and Fischer dieskau is just outstanding. Though the orchestral part ist much more interesting here with the Israel Orchestra. How about Boulez and Violetta Urmana (bautyfull voice in the "Rückert-Lieder")?
l love Violetta, in Lied, but l reserve my opinion when she sings operas, especially Italian operas, l find her very good in voice but a little poor in expression. Nethertheless. l love her, and may be l am wrong
Me like Mahler:D

Peculiar in the sense that no everybody can understand his music.
He writes sometimes very sadly and in the way quite rapidly he goes into a great dramatic beautiful lyricism. Joana.

This sure sounds like a studio recording.

@richstout hm I'm sure in a studio recording they would have cut back on the xylophone.

Does anyone know the Mahler piece that provides the main melody for the folk song ' Wenn Die Soldaten '?

Veramente sublime.
Forse questa è una delle più belle interpretazioni del Canto della Terra.

@hswunno Yeah, it's bad enough that we're listening to a Bernstein re-invention.

j'ai déjà écouté cet air. Gustav, c'est peut-être le seul VRAI musicien à l'écoute de l'âme humaine, de la souffrance de tout être

MAHLER is DIVINE and HUMAN. To die listening to his music, that's l would desire.

Exactly!! Did you listen to the first Bernstein-recording with James King and Fischer-Dieskau?

Yes l did, but l prefer the alto part sung by an alto. Don't you agree ?
