I remember how around 1973-74, Mennen had a whole slew of Skin Bracer commercials showing men slapping themselves and saying "Thanks, I Needed That". They even sold it in a clear bottle shaped like a right hand, which my Dad still keeps & refills.
It was from the early 80's. He was asked about it before and he said I shot that in either '81 or '82 right around the time I did a commercial for Footlocker in '81. As another person commented John was just graduating high school in the early 70's. You can clearly tell he's well into his 20's here. He was born in '52 so he would have been either 29 or 30 when he shot this Skin Bracer commercial.
You're right, it's not early 70's. The production really does feel 70's though. This Wikipedia entry suggests it's possible:

can't be early 70s, he didn't graduate HIGH SCHOOL until 1972. and didn't move to NYC until late 70s at earliest AFTER college. I'm thinking '82 or thereabouts?
