I made a mini z version about a year ago, worked really well. I used a PIC to program the software diff, with pwm going out to 4 bldc drivers. It was a little too quick and I destroyed it by sending it full speed into a wall when the controller battery died, the PIC didn't zero the PWM for an extra 2 seconds after... Ripped the entire front steering and wheel knuckles apart...
Trying again with a Losi micro rally car. Slightly bigger car, better suspension, and a whole lot more rugged :P.
