@malignantbassist You may want to check that F again (using a tuner). If you still decide you can "play" the F open then the Bb below third space C should sound really good open. Also, if you get to high C, you can play C C# D... Of course, the harmonics start getting nasty sounding (and nowhere close to in tune) with F.

Actually this sounds halfway decent, probably as good as a third- or fourth-year band student. Definitely a lot better than your Star Wars video!

The problem is that this piece is lots of black notes quite high in the horn's range. (Anything above nominal (written) C in the treble clef is considered a high note.)

misteramerica112: The double horn absolutely can be played like an old hunting horn. Actually, it is 14 keyed hunting horns in one. Pick a key, pick a fingering. The overlap is T13/0....T123/2. giving you the chromatic scale, overlapping on those two valve combinations.

yeah, it's not that you're the worse french horn player, you're just not playing the right instrument. please switch to trumpet and beast-mode it. french horns mostly play harmonics because they resonate and have a fuller sound than other horn instruments, but your technique would benefit most if you switched to a trumpet or bugle.

@infeted14 on french horn, it is possible to play all of those notes with no valves. i am pretty sure, though i may be wrong, that this piece was intented to be played on hunting horn, which has no valves at all.

The horn is by far the hardest instrument to play - much, much harder than even the oboe. Chances are that you won't be able to play anything this fast and high accurately for a long time. Even I still make a fair share of flubs, but then again my practice schedule is rather inconsistent.

when my trumpet teacher taught me to double tongue, i picked it up in about five minutes. it was always a very easy thing for me, while other brass players seem to have a much harder time with it.

I'm a trumpet player. It took me a long time to be able to double tounge. I've had people who have never played a trumpet before to hit G resting on the staff. But I never have heard someone double tounge at an early level of playing, (which he is trying to emulate).
