Very good review! I have a review of the droid on my channel as well! If anyone wants to check it out, just click my channel name and watch the video. :D
Enjoyed the review, thank you. I'm still agonizing over whether to wait a few months to see how the N1 on Verizon pans out, or diving into a new contract now with a Droid. Question though, I know it's silly, but I dig the wallpaper on your phone. Is it something that came in the OS, or did you get it from somewhere else?
ur phone is the old versian the new versian that has the update wich i got it ever since i never got a focus problem and its muchhh better than the old versian
@xxhoparikxx I recorded the video before the update was available. You are correct, the update does fix many issues, however I have had it fail to focus several times since the update, so I hope they don't leave it where it is now. As it is, it's still a great camera for a phone, it will just never replace a point and shoot.
@TMICK5 I did, I spent plenty of money on the Invisible Shield protectors, but my iPhone failed on me and had to be returned to Apple...3 times. I have since decided that if the piece of crap fails that often, it's not worth the time and effort of getting the Invisible Shield on just right. As you can tell, I'm pretty ticked at Apple for giving me 4 faulty devices.
The Droid, no question. It's cheaper, and better in every way, and Windows Mobile is just a pain to use. At one time, Windows Mobile was the best, but it's fallen behind even Symbian. Get the Droid.
Depends. For the on screen keyboard, it's not quite as good as the iPhone, for scrolling it's almost as good, for everything else it's about the same. Honestly, nothing feels quite like the iPhone in terms of touch screen responsiveness, but the Droid does very well, far better than most other touch screen phones, and nearly as good as the iPhone.
Well a notification will show up saying the name of the person and the first bit of their message on the message bar at the top of the screen, then once you tap on the message, their picture will show at the top of the screen, and below will be your conversation.
Their photo only shoes up once you open the conversation, or open the messaging application. When you get a text, it only shows their name.
kev do you know how much it costs for a motorola droid i mean if i have unlimited internet and 1400 minutes im on a family plan and have unlimited text do i have to pay 30 dollars a month
When you get a Droid, you are forced to get a data plan, if that is what you are asking. Prices of the plans depend on your family plan and how many minutes, so just look it up on their site. The price of the actual phone is $200 after MIR, but it's been lower the past few days, and Best Buy offers it without the MIR for the same price.
hey your question wasn't answered accuratly. im a verizon sales rep, and we will NOT force you to get a data plan if you do not currently have one. however, we will force you to pay the 30 dollars if you do not have unlimited internet. but since you do, your fine.
So I noticed you were using the gold camera button on the side when you were trying to take a picture. I was advised by a Verizon tech rep to use the on-screen shutter button when taking pictures instead. I've tried it many times and it does work. I was told that the gold camera button on the side is only meant to open the camera app (which I think doesn't sense, but at the same time -- I don't mind it not having that extra function).
I don't think that's the problem. It's better to use the camera button, because you can autofocus before taking the picture, which usually results in a clearer picture, rather than autofocusing and taking the picture at the same time, as it does when you use the screen. Also, the firmware glitch fixed itself a few weeks back, so the camera can focus now.
in macro mode...you need to be VERY close...you were VERY far away, therefore it won't focus...all the pictures you saw that were crappy were from people (like you) that do not (seem to) know how to use a digital camera.
You are severely mistaken. I am an amateur digital photographier, and own several point and shoots as well as a DSLR, so I know how to take pictures. The Droid camera has a software glitch that somehow ties the autofocusing system to the calendar, so it "magically" started focusing the other day. This glitch will be fixed in the first firmware update, but there was a glitch, and it wasn't user error as you claim.
No, but it's display is far better than just about every other device out there. The viewing angle is near perfect, far better than the iPhone, and the pixels per inch is ideal. After using this phone for 2 weeks and looking at my iPhone again, the iPhone looks terribly pixelated and washed out, the colors look awful and the screen just loses all of its luster compared to the Droid.
About the Hero vs Droid, I prefer the Droid, with the bigger, higher resolution screen, flash, and real keyboard, also it has a faster processor and comes with a bigger memory card.
I believe the Droid wins hands down. Sure, the camera and keyboard aren't as good as the Nokia, but nobody wants to use a resistive touchscreen after experiencing a capacitive one.
Quite the contrary, the slider feels very strong and reliable, and I don't ever see it failing. The only problems are that I would have preferred real buttons over touch sensitive buttons, and the keyboard is too flat. It would have been nice if they placed the charging port on the bottom rather than side, but otherwise the phone is nearly perfect. As far as software, it needs a firmware update badly to fix camera and sluggish homescreen issues, but that should come early December.
I love the droid. Not only is it an amazingly powerful phone, but it can do something the iPhone cannot, namely make calls. AT&T's network is awful, so using the iPhone is a nightmare. Not only that, the Droid has a bigger, higher resolution screen, a full qwerty keyboard, a higher rez camera with flash, free turn-by-turn guidance, and it's roughly the same size as the iPhone. The Droid is far superior in every way except music playback.
With regard to music playback, the music player on the phone is great, and sound quality is far better than the iPhone. The only issue is not even with music, it's the lack of a nice video player included on the phone. That said, I don't watch videos on my phone, and if I want to, Youtube is there, and it has rudimentary support.. just needs more codec support really.
I just got a droid today. So GPS use is free right, just like internet. Meaning I pay like $29.99 a month for the 'data and whatever services' and that means I can use internet and GPS all I want without any time charges? Figured you might know the answer, I can't seem to find the answer by searching online :( Great phone, I love it so far... only had it like 2 hours but so far it's amazing me! 5* for your great review.. I am still watching through the parts :)
Yes, GPS use is completely free. The only thing you might pay extra for is visual voicemail, which Verizon in their infinite wisdom charges for, while on AT&T and Sprint it is free.
Nice review. At 3:29-3:33, what's the "task killer" you mentioned? Could you send me the name or link for it? I'm supposed to get mine by FedEx on Wed Nov 11 2009 in the afternoon. On the store demo models, I didn't see any counterpart to Windows' task mgr that would tell me what was running. Plus I wasn't sure if apps had stopped running or were draining memory in the background.
You don't have to use a task killer, I just use one because I'm a nerd, and I want to keep an eye on what is running in the background. The program is called Advanced Task Killer Free.
No, although I just purchased an invisible shield for my Droid today, as I do with all of my gadgets (even my watch). In the review, there is nothing on the screen whatsoever, and it is just as it came in the box.
It looks that way in the video, but the Droid does not have the oleophobic screen treatment that the HTC Hero and iPhone 3GS have, so fingerprints show easier on it than those, but it's about the same as the iPhone 3G, except that fingerprints don't show on the back or sides on the Droid like they do on the iPhone, and the back of the Droid does not scratch very easily.
It's called "Weather Widget - Free" by "Android Apps".
I like it too, it offers a ton of options for when to refresh the weather, and what size you want it to be on your homescreen. I was used to using the Hero, which includes a great weather widget, so I missed it on the Droid until I found that one.
I think you will love it, as I have fallen in love with mine. It really is a much better device than any other Android phone out right now, and easily trumps the iPhone and any Blackberry.
I did, but considering I had to return my iPhone to Apple 3 times because it kept failing, I got tired of asking InvisibleShield for replacements using the lifetime warranty. Also, I was planning on scratching the aluminum trim to give it the "brushed" look, but never got around to it.
Seriously... please learn the difference between Micro USB (like Droid) and Mini USB (like HTC) there is absolutely nothing proprietary about the Micro USB connection on the Droid. As a matter of fact that micro USB has been recently named the world standard.
I am well aware of micro USB being a "world standard", however it is still less used than mini USB, and since everyone and their mother has tons of mini USB cables all around the place, but almost no one has micro, it makes perfect sense to stick with mini. Even the PS3 controller uses mini USB, along with external hard drives, cameras, video cams, and almost every other peripheral.
Making something new a "standard" doesn't standardize it, and it means nothing if it replaces another standard.
The mini USB plug is only 1.5 mm thicker, and would have easily fit on the side with plenty of room to spare.
Your parallel cable argument falls flat when you realize that parallel cables are no longer used, while mini usb will be in use until USB 3.0 is popularized, which could be several years.
Since far more devices use mini USB than micro, I would have preferred if Motorola used mini on the Droid, especially since the HTC Hero and N95 had mini and it was easier for me to charge and tether.
You must be confused, micro is half as thick, but wider. That said, the thickness difference (as stated) is only 1.5 mm, and on a phone that is 13.7mm thick, a 1.5 mm difference is nothing, roughly 10.1% of the total thickness. If you actually had the phone in your hand, you would see there was plenty of room to put a mini usb port there rather than micro, but you're just making conjectures based on false information and your ignorance of the subject.

All coming phones will come with micro.
-Its smaller
-Its more durable
-Mirco cable gets damaged first where the device port would get damaged first with mini.
-Supports OTG supplement
I do agree that its annoying to move away from a standard such as USB mini, but its gonna happen. Calling it proprietary is rather ridiculous.
