When TISWAS went national in 1976 John Asher was dropped and Sally James was brought in from LWT who's Saturday morning show "Our Show" had failed to attract an audience as big as ATV's TISWAS. Shame we had to share the show with the rest of the country really !
I remember when it started (the original Birmingham only series), the first few weeks were boring and John Asher was rubbish, then one morning John Asher was reading something or other and a boxing glove on a stick appeared from off camera and punched him in the head.
THEN it was a different program (because Chris Tarrant started his take over).
I remember my nan saying I ahould watch Saturday Swapshop (which started I think about 18 months after Tiswas) I remember the newsreader going through on a rope doing the Tarzan yodel before every episode of Tarzan.
Before it was Terry Thomas fishing, or Ulf Goran play guitar, ot Trueman and Arlott on Cricket or something (banana splits, arabian nights)
This is a great clip and a great way to start a saturday morning kids show to all the negative people that made negative coments you are the ones that are really sad yes you two guys are the ones who suck!. tiswasonline nice one more please.
@pancakes2000v1 You're 14 now go and do your homeowrk like a good little boy, and maybe try swearing at your mum like this she'll probably smack your stupid little arse! to everyone else... TISWAS = the best way to spend a sat morn in the early 80s
tor tami wami taka tora. What the fuck has that got to do with Tiswas ? Song is by Quantum Leap-'' Lone Ranger'' BTW Tiswas WAS the best and Matthew Butler is god
@hanghoodiescum This is probably before your time you sad pathetic prick grow up looser this is classic TV not a place for a small minded idiot like you.
This has to be a promo or audition / screen test. The 'original' televised presenter was Chris Tarrant with Sally James co-hosting, thee best Saturday morning show EVER!
Swapshop sucked.
Anybody know where i can find lyrics or video to that tune that showed cartoon African with bone through nose and the song went something like:
Tor tammi wammi tammi tor.. etc.. i'm sure Lenny Henry did the vocals but cant find it anywhere :(
I won't deny that, it's just that the first time i watched Tiswas I was primary school brat and it was shown on Yorkshire TV (YTV). I don't recall the earlier version, maybe i was watching Swap Shop at the time.
The earlier 'John Asher' version of Tiswas was only on ATV Midlands so you would never have seen it in Yorkshire. Tarrant was in the early editions as well but only as the sidekick.
fantastic!!!!!! the original tiswas theme!! instantly remembered this from 1975/6..the jon asher era.. i went to his wedding at oxley church wolverhampton
I like how the guy who shows up after the intro is wearing a t-shirt promoting real ale! You just don't get that sort of advertising for children these days.
i was glad they finally got rid of it.the guests and sketches were the same every week and the jokes were so corny and telegraphed they were embarrassing.i really hated it towards the end
Yes you are quite right in terms of the graphics (as per GS titles on this very site) but as a childrens' programme the budget would have been peanuts, hence the recycling
Wow! I am just old enough to remember Chris Tarrant, Sally James, Lenny Henry (oooooooooookaaaaaaaaaaay), Bob Carolgees, The Flantom, Spit The Dog (ptoo), Sid The Parrot (squawk, shut up,slap) and an endless barrage of custard pies.
This is the TISWAS I remember...from the days when it was a Midlands-only programme produced by ATV. My family emigrated to Australia in 1976, so I missed the later, nationally-networked version of the show (the one with Sally James, etc.). To me, TISWAS is all about John Asher and "Atomic Butterfly" (the original and the best TISWAS theme...I don't care what anyone says!).
@spokest - me too ! With ATV as our ITV region we were spoilt. It was so well formatted and really quirky with oddball presenters/journalists like Peter Tomlinson, John Swallow, Chris Tarrant and Derek Hobson.
I presonally think 'Atomic Butterfly' (as heard here) was a much better tune than what came later, but I suspect I might be outnumbered on that one. It was also used and the theme tune for a tea-time weeknight sports/news programme on HTV Wales a couple of years later...
It just goes to show that pefection takes a while to br created. If the show was left like this, I wonder what would have come from it? Proberly nothing of the following it has with Chris and Sally at the helm. None-the-less, good to see this.
@bazclack - TISWAS began in 1974 with Chris Ashley and Chris Tarrant. It was unique and the audience was so big that it was networked on ITV a couple of years later. It was the format that was successful.
@spookyphill Richard Barnes presented a short for BFBS on the eve of the first live micro relay from the UK to Germany of the ITN and BBC news programmes in December 1982. Someone has uploaded it to YouTube, but the person is adamant it's from 1983.
That was so funny. What's the the programme has gone down the drain I said drain not rain rain oh no. I come back to ATV and I get coverd in water oh no. That bit is so funny. TODAY IS SATURDAY WATCH AND SMILE LOL
Just what were they thinking allowing a presenter to wear a CAMRA (campaign for real ale) t-shirt on a kids show? Thank goodness for the later sensibilities of Chris Tarrant and Sally James :)
Tiswas was often full of adult inuendo that just over the kid's heads. Thats what made is so funny! This was removed from later 1980's shows as political correctness got a foothold and the program soon folded.
Tiswas and the Golden Shot were both produced from ATV's Birmingham studios in the early-mid 70s so its probably not a coincidence that they look a bit similer. Great to see the old 'ATV Zoom' ident as well...
When TISWAS went national in 1976 John Asher was dropped and Sally James was brought in from LWT who's Saturday morning show "Our Show" had failed to attract an audience as big as ATV's TISWAS. Shame we had to share the show with the rest of the country really !
