  • When TISWAS went national in 1976 John Asher was dropped and Sally James was brought in from LWT who's Saturday morning show "Our Show" had failed to attract an audience as big as ATV's TISWAS. Shame we had to share the show with the rest of the country really !

  • Aaahhhh good ole ATVLand I feel like a 40 year old kid

  • LOL ahhh yes would a presenter apear on a modern kids show wearing a CAMRA shirt?

  • did that boy said a swear word at 0:51 and that opening is from 1974-1977

  • Saturday mornings were great back then.

  • I really dig his CAMRA shirt!

  • Compost Corner - this is what they want!

  • Almost good enough to bboy too!

  • I remember when it started (the original Birmingham only series), the first few weeks were boring and John Asher was rubbish, then one morning John Asher was reading something or other and a boxing glove on a stick appeared from off camera and punched him in the head.

THEN it was a different program (because Chris Tarrant started his take over).

    It was great (until Tarzan).

  • classic tv fuck it must have been boring in the 50s

  • Now we know who Richard Whiteley went to for style tips!

It's kinda creepy how much he looks like a young Richard Whiteley.

  • Every time i watch these kind of clips from the 80s/70s it makes me hate the PC brigade even more.

  • that guy reminds me a little bit of David Mitchell

  • This title music was used in a Special Branch episode where a woman is dancing on a stage. I'll have to upload it.

  • Was that John Asher doing the intro? he left the show and did a record ` lets twist again` it didn`t chart and i never heard of him after that .

  • Why do comments on YouTube always have to include a load of expletives (F-bombs etc) ~ it's so unnecessary and immature.

Can't you express yourselves any other way?

  • I remember my nan saying I ahould watch Saturday Swapshop (which started I think about 18 months after Tiswas) I remember the newsreader going through on a rope doing the Tarzan yodel before every episode of Tarzan.

Before it was Terry Thomas fishing, or Ulf Goran play guitar, ot Trueman and Arlott on Cricket or something (banana splits, arabian nights)

Bring it back - it was ACE

  • This is a great clip and a great way to start a saturday morning kids show to all the negative people that made negative coments you are the ones that are really sad yes you two guys are the ones who suck!. tiswasonline nice one more please.

  • This Clip is not that good but Tiswas was great and so was Sally James.

  • SHIT FUCKED UP SHOW!!!!!!

  • @pancakes2000v1 You're 14 now go and do your homeowrk like a good little boy, and maybe try swearing at your mum like this she'll probably smack your stupid little arse! to everyone else... TISWAS = the best way to spend a sat morn in the early 80s

  • I see someone else picked up on the CAMRA T shirt ;-)

  • this tv show looks shit.bet they did fuck all on the show.

  • fuck off you don't know a brilliant show when you see one.

  • @Golfa19 Yeah what ever! ITS A REALY SHIT SHIT SHIT SHOW!!!

  • tor tami wami taka tora. What the fuck has that got to do with Tiswas ? Song is by Quantum Leap-'' Lone Ranger'' BTW Tiswas WAS the best and Matthew Butler is god

  • It's a kids' show and he's wearing a "Campaign fo real ale" T Shirt! Fantastic!

  • @InternationalNobody

That's exactly what I was going to say!

:-) Class, almost as good as the Dick & Dom "Morning Wood" t-shirt from a few years back...

  • How many of you would just LoVe to see the rest of ThiS programme rather than ANY of the shit ITV WaN put on now.

  • @supergav67 I totally agree with you.

  • @blondetail this is crap blondetail how come u watch this .there wearing tacky suits do you wear tacky suits al bet you do dont yer

  • @blondetail a think me screens on its way out its deffo yellow same color as your hair hence the sunglases lol

  • @supergav67 HA!!! U KNOW THIS MATE!!!!

  • A great programme

    though the graphics were tragic

    I'm going away

    Tp practice some magic!

  • This has to be a promo or audition / screen test. The 'original' televised presenter was Chris Tarrant with Sally James co-hosting, thee best Saturday morning show EVER!

    Swapshop sucked.

Anybody know where i can find lyrics or video to that tune that showed cartoon African with bone through nose and the song went something like:

Tor tammi wammi tammi tor.. etc.. i'm sure Lenny Henry did the vocals but cant find it anywhere :(

  • Nonsense, befor it was networked it ran on ATV only for several years.

  • @ Bigtone0

I'll take your word for it.

I was in the YTV network area throughout the 70's

  • Was Enny Everett video show, toma towama taki tora, was off sixties hit record i think, hope this helps!

  • @ glwilcock1

Ahhh... Good man, good man :D

It was featured on the Kenny Everett show, not TISWAS. Geez.. my memory getting bad now. I got confused, lol

Oh well.. a new search begins. Thanks pal :)

  • Found it :D

    watch?v=F4iH3wbLYwE

  • youre wrong Chris Tarrant WASN'T the first present John Asher was......

  • @ xenbear

I won't deny that, it's just that the first time i watched Tiswas I was primary school brat and it was shown on Yorkshire TV (YTV). I don't recall the earlier version, maybe i was watching Swap Shop at the time.

  • @6MadeInEngland9

The earlier 'John Asher' version of Tiswas was only on ATV Midlands so you would never have seen it in Yorkshire. Tarrant was in the early editions as well but only as the sidekick.

  • a slight brain-spaz at 0:46 i fancy... made me laugh i adored this program.

  • i never forgave kate bush for not showing up for an interveiw once... shows my age eh???

  • Kids weren't patronised in those days. Wheras now we have a juvenile adult population.

  • We dont just throw this show together

The show for Kids who thought swaop shop was oh so stuk up

  • This was the exact same time a certain teenager called John Lydon wandered into Malcolm McLaren's shop on the King's Road in Chelsea....

  • I would have been 6 in 1975 so I was a bit too young for tiswas for a few years, so I remember the later intro.

  • I don't remember these credits but the later ones with the "saturday, saturday, saturday is tiswas day" song.

That presenter wasn't Chris Tarrant ?

  • fantastic!!!!!! the original tiswas theme!! instantly remembered this from 1975/6..the jon asher era.. i went to his wedding at oxley church wolverhampton

  • I like how the guy who shows up after the intro is wearing a t-shirt promoting real ale! You just don't get that sort of advertising for children these days.

  • children's entertainers...leave those kids alone

  • i was glad they finally got rid of it.the guests and sketches were the same every week and the jokes were so corny and telegraphed they were embarrassing.i really hated it towards the end

  • The opening titles for the 1975 series look like recycled Golden Shot titles.

  • Yes you are quite right in terms of the graphics (as per GS titles on this very site) but as a childrens' programme the budget would have been peanuts, hence the recycling

  • there was intro? i dont remember that, lol

  • Wow! I am just old enough to remember Chris Tarrant, Sally James, Lenny Henry (oooooooooookaaaaaaaaaaay), Bob Carolgees, The Flantom, Spit The Dog (ptoo), Sid The Parrot (squawk, shut up,slap) and an endless barrage of custard pies.

This, however, is completely alien to me.

  • young enough to not remember this sequence

  • great stuff cant remember these opening titles there very much like the golden shot start up in which also came from atv land in brum nice one

  • o the memories.....

  • This is the TISWAS I remember...from the days when it was a Midlands-only programme produced by ATV. My family emigrated to Australia in 1976, so I missed the later, nationally-networked version of the show (the one with Sally James, etc.). To me, TISWAS is all about John Asher and "Atomic Butterfly" (the original and the best TISWAS theme...I don't care what anyone says!).

  • Me & my girl we love each other.

  • tiswas rules swapshop sucks

  • John Asher and Chris Tarrant, this was a great show. And these are the best titles.

  • This was the best. Brummie owned and made. I was quite annoyed when it went national and we had to share it with everyone else.

  • @spokest - me too ! With ATV as our ITV region we were spoilt. It was so well formatted and really quirky with oddball presenters/journalists like Peter Tomlinson, John Swallow, Chris Tarrant and Derek Hobson.

  • The theme sounds really dated for 1975 - quite 1960s.

  • And quite deliberately so: the titles and music here are very similar to those used by ATV for "The Golden Shot" at exactly the same time as this.

  • This was the original and best theme.

  • I much prefer this theme and, although I loved the show all the way through, this was the classic period for me.

  • I presonally think 'Atomic Butterfly' (as heard here) was a much better tune than what came later, but I suspect I might be outnumbered on that one. It was also used and the theme tune for a tea-time weeknight sports/news programme on HTV Wales a couple of years later...

  • It just goes to show that pefection takes a while to br created. If the show was left like this, I wonder what would have come from it? Proberly nothing of the following it has with Chris and Sally at the helm. None-the-less, good to see this.

  • @bazclack - TISWAS began in 1974 with Chris Ashley and Chris Tarrant. It was unique and the audience was so big that it was networked on ITV a couple of years later. It was the format that was successful.

  • great stuff ! i was a tiswas kid!

  • SSVC stands for the Services Sound and Vision Corporation. broadcast radio and tv to the troops in iraq afganistan falklands ans germany etc

  • @spookyphill Richard Barnes presented a short for BFBS on the eve of the first live micro relay from the UK to Germany of the ITN and BBC news programmes in December 1982. Someone has uploaded it to YouTube, but the person is adamant it's from 1983.

  • i know richard barnes hes now a programme planner at SSVC TV.

  • What does SSVC TV stand for please?

  • great video but thank god they changed the theme tune.

  • I actually prefer this theme tune, this is how I remember the show.

  • who were those presenters?

  • That was so funny. What's the the programme has gone down the drain I said drain not rain rain oh no. I come back to ATV and I get coverd in water oh no. That bit is so funny. TODAY IS SATURDAY WATCH AND SMILE LOL

  • First time I've seen that since it was last aired! Thanks for putting it on.

  • Likewise -brill. Best happy energetic into music - at the time and not too bad now.

  • Just what were they thinking allowing a presenter to wear a CAMRA (campaign for real ale) t-shirt on a kids show? Thank goodness for the later sensibilities of Chris Tarrant and Sally James :)

  • Tiswas was often full of adult inuendo that just over the kid's heads. Thats what made is so funny! This was removed from later 1980's shows as political correctness got a foothold and the program soon folded.

  • Funky tune reminds me of old cinema adverts

  • It goes go to show that perfection does actually start off quite rubbish as times!

  • "What was that?

    Programme's going the drain no--

    I SAID DRAIN NOT RAIN!!!

    RAI--(laughs)

'Come back again to ATV' they said--

on TISWAS and the first 30 seconds of the programme--

    I don't know--

I hope it doesn't go on like this through the rest of the sho--(laughs again)oh no!!!"

  • That part caused me to do just as the title said: "watch and smile"!

/found out about Tiswas this hour/

  • Tiswas and the Golden Shot were both produced from ATV's Birmingham studios in the early-mid 70s so its probably not a coincidence that they look a bit similer. Great to see the old 'ATV Zoom' ident as well...

  • the bitsa with the "flying spots" reminds me of the Golden Shot opening titles!

  • just great thanks. facinating to see the early stuff again. cheers
