Where did the foundry obtain the ceramic filters? The only ones I found on the Internet were in China. Are there supply houses in the States where they are sold?
Thanks for sharing such an informative video. When the molten metal flowed thru the filter, would the high temperature decrease? Also, why would the molten metal NOT penetrate the sand & cause it to collapse? Thanks.
The filter is ceramic and of a low specific heat itself, it may drop the temperature of the bronze a few degrees but not so as to cause any problem with it flowing.
The sand has been mixed with a special epoxy which hardens before anything is cast in it. It is like concrete when the bronze is poured. More traditionally the sand is tamped very thoroughly so it is very rigid, but in this foundry they have chosen the epoxy method. Such sand cannot be reused of course.
do they cast them with or without the hole? because from a TV show I've seen they told the hole was drilled or at least re-drilled after the casting in order to be sure it was straight.
I'm french guy, US guns fan (Field gun, moutain ones...)
Want to build a Mountain Howitzer Cannon, looking just like the one U can see on Buckstix site...Do U provide this hind of barrel? What scale? 1.75" bore?
It's for me important ratio width/length = 1/5, just like Buckstix one...OK?
On my 9 Youtube videos, U can see the "Marshall-Muray" 1/3 scale (in fact an US field gun)...That this kind of result I want to obtain, about an around 1/2 scaled M.H.Cannon.
i love all the flammables by the foundry

I remember I did some sand casting in metal shop when I was in high school.

Wasn´t these canons originally cast in cire perdue, which is a much more complicated technique than sandcasting ?

They are cast solid, then the bore is bored on a lathe. That produces the strongest cannon when you are using bronze.

Are they just decorative or could you actually go use them? Might be fun to have a swivel gun at our farm.

As far as I know, the foundry sells most of them to people who go out and shoot them using black powder.

You want to go to the Graybeard Blackpowder website and get on their cannons and mortars pages, there's a forum, they have all the answers for you.

How is the raw cast hollowed out?
Strihnin 3 years ago
They create the bores on a lathe, using a boring bar.
