  • This is from a documentary recording made just before the organ's restoration, hence the rugged state of tuning. Roth omitted the mixtures from all his registrations on this album, as they were even worse out of tune that the rest of the organ!

  • My gosh! Troubling to read all these posts. How can it be that things can go so "wrong?" Well, we'll leave THAT one for others. Regardless of it all, I'm delighted to have the chance to hear this organ, having been fortunate to be in Paris in June of 2009 and see it (albeit from floor level). Would that money existed to preserve, protect and properly enjoy all these wonderful organs! I can only say at this point, THANKS for posting this!

  • Not pretty music, but impressive.

Where is Vincent Price when you need him...

That is an entrance cue if I every heard one.

  • yes i agree it dose need tuning the reeds need that the most but still i very great and mighty pipe organ.

  • Wow, needs tunig!

But together with the dome it makes the sound even more terrifying!

  • That's excellent indeed. It's always a rare treat to hear this instrument, there aren't many good recordings of it lying around. Look at that beard! He looks much more venerable without it.

  • It is interesting how unknown the Sacre Coeur organ is even though its had so many famous organists eg, Daniel Roth, Rolande Falcinelli, Naji Hakim....It is such a shame as it is a great organ.

  • It's true that this organ is relatively unknown. That has to do with a peculiarity of the Sacré-Coeur Basilica: its 24/7 veneration of the Sacrament in silence, except for the services. So, it is nearly impossible to make recordings or give concerts in this church with its beatiful organ.

  • It's beacuse they are not allowed to have concerts in Sacre Coeur, which is crazy!

  • questi organi suonano quasi da soli talmente son belli!

  • I visited this place on saturdaywhile in paris and i saw the organ, it is Masssive !

  • why this silence today at the Sacre Coeur ???

  • Another Daniel Roth masterpiece. When we lived in England in the 1980s and 90s I recall some organ critics there said that improvisation in France had rather run its course, but it obviously had not - in fact, it has become even more skilled, as Roth proves. Yes, the Sacre-Coeur reeds could use some tuning in this piece. Reeds can get out ot tune easily - even a slight temperature change can cause problems as tuners have told me.

  • 3:49 , reeds need a bit of tuning!

  • Nope, very much the hallmark Sacre Coeur reeds, very reedy and very French. Not much used today though,as the Organ has fallen to bits and is in a dreadful state of disrepair.

  • I have a couple of AGO magazines from 1975, and his picture is in it. My god he looked young!

  • Magniloquenza del linguaggio organistico. E' Daniel Roth!!

  • The catholic church is so rich in Tradition and culture. The French and the portuguese taught Christianity to the the whole world and now, it in turn needs help and revival. France has to be a Catholic nation once again and the youths have to maintain and Revive the Heavenly Religion...

The Catholic church is the Universal Church in which God gave the keys to the Kingdom of heaven when he asked Peter(Or First pope) to build a church on that rock...

SAVE THE CATHOLIC RELIGION... IN FRANCE pls

  • Incredible! Daniel is truly a master of the organ. Awesome pics as well.

  • Daniel Roth does it again! What a phenominal musician on such a magnificient instrument! A true feast for the ears!

  • Another stunning Cavaille Coll/Mutin Organ. The Parisiennes are sooo lucky to have so many Organ gems in one place - except for one, you need to travel down to Rouen to hear the best of them all!

  • This is one of my favorite Cavaille-Coll organs (Notre-Dame de Paris is my # 1). I wish more organists would record this instrument. And of course, Daniel Roth is nothing less than amazing!

  • One thing about the Sacre Coeur: the dome gives a terrifying acoustic! Whereas most churches (Sulpice, Notre-Dame de Paris, St Ouen), have have their reverberation equally distributed frequency-wise, the Sacre Coeur resonates in the lower registers. That place is truly terrifying when the big stops come out. Regards, Paul.

  • This organ need to be featured more. It's typical cavaille-coll, with a thunderous bombarde chorus on the pedals, powerful reeds and lush foundations.

  • THis cavaille-coll doesn't quite get the attention it deserves. In this improvisation, the slightly out of tune reeds, combined with the typically thunderous pedal bombarde chorus makes this organ sound frightening and powerful.

  • I think, given the almost complete lack of church attendance in France, that a lot of the great cathedrals/basilicas will have to be turned into museums. I don't think the Catholic church can continue to maintain them. The French government already maintains some of the pipe organs (Sst. Eustache & Notre Dame come to mind) as national treasures; maybe it will ultimately just take over entire buildings.

  • Perhaps if services were completely music, instead of so much speaking, there would be a revival in church attendance. You wouldn't even have to go back to the Latin Mass...just make it completely music. We all think so differently! Then you wouldn't have to crack down on the heretics!

  • You are indeed correct. It says so on the video itself, but I probably should modify the comments to reflect that.
