lol, i was looking up what a speed wobble was because it just happened to me today and yup, this is actually what happened to me. i have a 04 gsxr 600. i was doing maybe 100mph. i had to get off the freeway after that scare. i just got new tires yesterday and was first time riding today. im on some power pures
Nah, he should get his suspension checked out, it shouldn't wobble that easy, sure a steering damper is a nice invention, but you need to get the suspension set up correctly, before you add a damper, otherwise you are just covering the problem up, and not fixing it.
Service the forks, aka new oil and check the springs (get some for your weight), then set the SAG on the bike for your weight, then you can add a stabilizer if you still feel like you need one.
Good save, when it happend to me it scared the shit out of me! next time fit a steering damper or move your body towards the front wheel to sort the slap out, dont want you to kiss the asphalt bro!
Next time give it some gas...you were decelerating, thats why your whobble amplified... and thats were it started... look carefully at the video..the moment you stoped accelerating the wobble started.. take care..
OH FUCK OH FUCK OH FUCK OH FUCK OH FUCK OH FUCK OH FUCK. HOOOOOOOOOOOOLY SHIIIIIIIT!!!!! Nice save dude. Were you able to clean the shit stains out of your pants?
The only reason the wobbles got that bad was because the rider was grabbing the bars and didn't loosen his grip when they started. If he had done it properly he would have loosened his grip and stopped putting input into the bars while simultaneously putting his weight forward while grabbing the tank with his legs, which would have allowed the bike to correct its self much faster.
In fairness to the rider he didnt go flat out through blind crests or corners. He also didnt slam on the brakes like a noob when the slapper happened and instead powered out of it properly. Credit where credits' due, good job mate. I'd say some poo came out of you during that one.
Get the suspension reworked for your weight and riding style, reduces the need for a steering damper but still invest in one for the time you will need it
@zachs13 it's pretty obvious how you ride by the videos you've posted of yourself riding. it should be obvious by the comments on your video that you're an idiot for riding like that on public roads. if you want to ride that fast be responsible and take your super sweet R6 to the track and race it with the real men, the real riders. only squids ride like you do on public roads and think it's acceptable behavior.
I don't need to reiterate the people who said keep it off the road but I will add that is this is the third time, maybe you should invest in a steering stabilizer? Works wonders for my bike. :D I have a GPR and love it. But, I also don't do this crap on public roads either.
Hold your body mass up with your abs and get your weigh off your hands, the bars are for steering not holding onto or keeping your torso up. You might want to look up a book called "Twist of the Wrist" by Keith Codes. Bad technique will get you killed faster than anything else.
@zachs13: this is the third time you've gotten a tank slapper yet you continue to ride as if it won't happen again. going at those speeds when something is clearly not adjusted correctly (suspension, tire pressure, etc) shows you're a negligent rider with a poor understanding of cause and effect. one tank slapper should be enough to make you slow down until the problem is solved; additionally it shows you don't know how to setup a motorcycle, otherwise you wouldn't be getting tank slappers.
@zachs13 Nobody holds together a tank slapper, man. You either luck out or you don't. If this started happening when you got new tires, you should get the balance of those tires looked into. Also put your suspension back to stock if you have twiddled with it. FWIW, chopping the throttle is almost NEVER the answer to anything that's going wrong, although it is almost always the first instinct in a panic, trust me I know. Best advice you never asked for is this: get to a track.
@zachs13: there you go, stock suspension is not setup for each rider. you have to tune and adjust suspension properly for your weight and riding style and riding conditions. if you took the time to learn about how suspension works and took the time to learn how to ride at a track then you wouldn't be getting tank slappers and you wouldn't be getting all of the racers watching this video giving you shit. man up and learn how to take constructive criticism.
@zachs13 Typically thats from putting to much input into your handle bars/clip ons. Glad it looked like you had gear on, but a good video to look into is twist of the wrist 2. Will may help you see where you make mistakes like we all do. Also get on a track man 145 on a public road is asking for something to happen.
it happen to me only once, but I'm still wondering what's the reason for that? some people told me that my steering damper is bad and it's time to get new one.
@zachs13 , real riders don't go 145+mph on a public road with intersections, cross traffic, oncoming cars, and potholes. If you're gonna ride like an idiot on a shitty R6 at least get a damper and take it to the track or an empty freeway without other cars around. Otherwise your next helmet cam video is going to feature your face embedded into the hood of a F350. Dumbshit. I've done 160 without being an idiot, you seem to not be capable of choosing good roads to speed on.
@themattreid I am not going to take advice from anyone that refers to themselves as "The" anything. You saw 2 minutes of video and can sum up all of my riding habits, lifestyle choices, and apparently intellect from just that? Don't tell me not to speed on a public road and then a few sentences later say you've done 160 at a probable attempt to impress or "one-up" me. The intersecting road was closed, the road I'm on was repaved only several months ago. Try to keep your badass attitude offline
omfg my hands are sweaty from watching this, because I know what it feels like!! what do you do to stop it?! just hold on tight on the handle bars--to try to correct the wobble, or what? brakes?
@g0d00101 there are a lot of theories on the best thing to do. personally i think it depends on the specific situation. I just gripped the tank with my knees to keep it from whipping me off, tried to ride it out for a few seconds and ended up shifting my weight back and rolling back on the throttle. I think when I gave it gas is when it came out of it.
WOW! I know exactly how you feel. I had a slapper at 120 mph on my 08 r6 just the other day. Dunno how the hell I saved it. Im glad you survived this !!!!!!
That's a proper "Oh Sh>>!" moment right there. It did last pretty long too. Good riding skills to make it out of that. Fitted any steering dampers yet? What year R6 is this?
This shit just happened to me today so I had to look for it on youtube. Luckily I saved it also in a 09 zx10 getting on the freeway. I remember thinking how to bail and then thought to myself "FUCK NO!" and just grabbed firmly. My buddy thought I was done for. It was during a short turn and I was leaning very little but the nose was off the ground. First time it happened but glad I didn't bite it.
@outkastfarmer2 yeah its happened to me several times and every single time for that first split second you feel like you're done. then the logic steps in and tells you to get your shit together lol.
this is the road bumb, you hit the road bumb, may be tire pressure too low, bombs are usually in intersection , speed is very normal, 120kmph, my normal speed, its like walking.... I heard wobble sometimes happen about 300kmph very rare or more speed,

@MagentaZz1 Unfortunately it isn't the decision of those in oncoming traffic nor those trying to exit their driveways that you are riding 145 mph in what I would guess to be a 35 mph zone.
Absolutely insane. Way to hold on though, and glad the bike righted itself. Also, the guys on the forums (Where I found this) Are just condescending, self-righteous, hypocritical keyboard warriors.
