@dsm2xtreme It won't happen. Even the resampling quality problem at 720p is not solved. Get newer models, or you're out of luck. I'm sorry to say that, but that's how things work...
@ashleybrown013 Not for this video. But I use the lens occasionally when shooting a video because it's quiet and its stabilizer is not too optimized for still photos.
@CADETINATORT1000 Yes, it can shoot 1080i, but at 20fps which is very slow. T2i can go up to 30fps with 1080i, so get T2i instead of T1i if "full HD" recording is important.
Yes, but cropped in Photoshop from the RAW image.
There's no way to crop the video part since the images are resampled by the camera to very small size (1080p or 720p). T2i solves this problem by supporting video cropping.
hey since you are a mac user (like me) I don't now the best way to get the highest quality out of my T1i videos. The T1i doesn't appear as a mounted drive on my desktop, so I can't import videos that way, but do you use iMovie to import? I've been importing them into iPhoto with my pictures, and the quality has not been that great. It's the footage, nothing has to do with the lens or anything, I'm just wondering how you import your footage.
I use iPhoto to import the footage, and edit them on iMovie. The default iMovie export settings are sufficient for 720p videos. For 1080p videos, I use "Export using QuickTime" because the default setting only supports up to 720p.
Unlike analog or tape-based DV camcorders, how you import the videos doesn't affect the quality at all.
Are you using Class 6 SDHC card? If you use slower card (like class 4), the video quality decreases because the bandwidth is not enough for the HD videos.
Final Cut Pro is one of the best video editing applications! I had used Adobe Premiere for 10 years and was about to switch to FCE. But iMovie w/ Photoshop does 80% of things I wanted quickly, and I don't make 2 hour videos for DVDs mainly because of YouTube.
The manual says "If the card's writing speed is slow, movie shooting may stop automatically. Use an SD Speed Class 6 or faster." So Class 6 is an official requirement, but I'm not sure about the behavior when the lower class card is used.
Hey! What's up, I am trying to find a great HD video camera that can help me! I edit in FCP and I would like to know if you recommend me this camera or not, please tell me, I saved up money! : ) Thank you, btw video is amazing!
Taking a video using T1i is more like filming as opposed to taping. The DSLR's picture quality is a lot better than the others especially with the wide selection of the lens. However, there are some weakness such as poor sound, no practical autofocusing, less battery time, no view finder, etc.
Final Cut Pro is a perfect editing tool for the camera. So go get T1i if you want the picture quality. If you don't like the weakness of the camera, then you should look for more conventional cameras.
I just have one more question, sorry. Is this camera worth buying for like movie usage? I understood that the picture quality is outstanding but in both video and picture! thanks!!
This is a really well done video. Have you heard that there might be a new Rebel announced next week? The rumor is that it will have selectable fps. But there are other problems with video from the T1i- like the crappy audio and no external mic. I hope they fix that as well. If Canon does not improve the video capabilities of the next rebel I'll probably look at the micro four thirds cameras.
You can disable the auto exposure by pressing first * button then the ISO, but you can't set the aperture, speed or ISO by yourself that's for sure, so you can first point a brighter area, let the ISO automatically set to the minimum, let's say 100 or 200, and the aperture and speed will be also set to the lowest, so once you lock the setting to those values, those won't automatically change once you start to record... you could try that.. I just dont get your DOF trick..
My technique basically disconnects electric connection between the lens and body by unlocking slightly. No connection means no more aperture adjustment signal can be sent to the lens, so the lens keeps the current aperture setting.
Just be sure to *press the preview button* when you unlock the lens in Av mode.
I thought that so, but isn't a bit risky for the lens? Well you could try what I said above, I guess it works the same too, because it's on the manual, you can disable the auto exposure.. Works perfect for me. Hope this will help:)
Yes, it's actually pretty risky (not electrically, but physically). That's a very good point! I don't recommend to use the technique unless the camera is on a tripod.
The purpose of the technique is to get the desired depth of field by setting the aperture without changing the exposure.
If the DOF is not that important (which is 90% of the time), then using the exposure compensation ([Av] + dial) and exposure lock ([*] button) is sufficient.
The video was very helpful and the dog was adorable. I think this is what I was waiting for. I'd lived with my 35mm Elan SLR and enjoyed an S5 digital. With the video added now I find this pretty hard to pass up and I can put my EF lenses back to work that I had for an Elan II SLR using film. Remember that stuff? Thanks again.
As for the aperture (setting DOF), there's a hack. Switch to Av mode, set the aperture, slightly unlock the lens while pressing the preview button, then switch back to the video mode. By following this, you can set the F-number manually.
For this kind of scene, the better way is to make a time-lapse video. Instead of using the video mode, take a sequence of photos in pre-determined interval (like 10 sec) and animate. You'll get the full manual control with a lot better picture quality.
And can you correct at least 2 stops from the auto setting, i dont know if what im asking is making sense, sorry but english is not my lenguage.
Ive searching a lot on the internet, one more question, you think is possible that they release a new firmware that gives you the chance of doing manual exposure?
Auto exposure isn't bad, but in some cases it is annoying like when you want to shoot a small bright object in a dark background. 2 stop adjustment is possible.
I'm too hoping they will release a firmware with the manual video mode. The hardware is capable of the manual mode, but I doubt Canon will provide the feature for marketing reasons. We can just hope...

Does anyone know if you can get a lense that lets you zoom while recording for SLR's that shoot HD video??

you can zoom even with the kitlens. its just hard to keep the camera steady and zoom at the same time.

yes I thought the memory card could've been an issue. So, class 6 or higher?? I think that was the only issue. I use FCE to edit.

Yes, it's worth it (at least for me). If you are a pro, you should go get 5D Mark II or 7D; otherwise, T1i is the way to go.
Just keep in mind that the camera is heavier than traditional camcorders, does not have autofocus, and has limited battery life per charge, etc.
