Also, I wouldn't worry about the mainstream appeal of this genre. It hasn't and likely won't hit the modern day dubstep tier. The fanbase will not like it for the same reason you do anymore. A deep, secret part of you gets brought into the open. Or you simply don't want to hear varied opinions, because you just want to enjoy it without over-analyzing it. A lot of personal comfort and companionship is lost as popularity rises. But it is exciting.

However, please note that XM is actually the original file format of (most of) these tunes. It is also a source format, meaning that you can actually load it into a program like Milky Tracker and edit the files etc. So I don't think dismay would be an appropriate reaction for having them. ;)
